    3. When researching anything that is "German," it is improtant to try and ascertain the relegion, most were Putheran or Catholic and as groups these folks settled soemtimes in the the New World in simliar communities. Familes usally came togehter, though not always the case. Many German Catholics and Lutheran came because of religious persecution, but at different times. About 6,000 Ault Lutheraners, left in the 1840's because of conflicts with the state church, most of these were from Pommern, Silesia, Brandenburg. Catholics often were from other areas and many came later as they may or may not have been German/Prussian, they may have lived close to border areas or in one of the many countrys that came and went. Asutria, Hungary, Bavaria, Rhine Land, some of what is towday Poland. All of these were often German speaking peoples. Religion helps narrow down areas that they left and where they settled. Find others in the area, find the chruch wehere they first went to when they went to America. People from this part of the world often times had their social lives centered around thier chruch. lastly with Zimmerman/Zimermann, remeber the NN and N cahngedged sometimes in the same document when immigrating or in the same family, an N was dropped or added. Sorry if you thought I was preaching, but that approach has worked well from me. Rob Bowe Zimmermann descended from Micheal Freidrich Gottlieb Zimmerman, son Of Johann Zimmermann, (Koertenthin, Isle OF Wollin, Pommern, Prussia (North Germany East OF Hamburg.) Immigrated to Dodge County, Wisconsin. Clair Johnson wrote: > Yes. Bayern is the same as Bavaria. Neuhaus means (new house).
