    1. [ZIMMERMAN-L] Johannes Zimmermann
    2. Chuck McKeown
    3. I have just recently uncovered a Swiss relative and am new to this list. I am searching for Johannes and Magelena (possibly Gapper or Gaffer) Zimmermann from Schaffhausen, Switzerland. They would have been born about 1790-1800. At least three of their children immigrated to America. Johannes (known as John in America) C. Zimmermann born in Trasadingen, Canton Schaffhausen, Switzerland, on August 20th 1826 was the third of eight children. He was a minister with German Evangelical and Reformed Church, trained at the Basel Seminary and volunteered to go to America in 1853 to preach to the German immigrants in mid-America. He later became a leader of the Evangelical Synod of St. Louis. His two sisters, Magdelena b. 1824 and Ursula b. 1841 immigrated with him, as well as Karl Frederick Doehring of Esslingen, Kingdom of Wurttemburg, another Basel graduate, who married first Magelena, and upon her death in 1865, Ursula. Thank you for your assistance, in advance. Chuck McKeown Bend, Oregon

    1. [ZIMMERMAN-L] LYNE (LINE)/BEAR/CARPENTER and others part II
    2. Robert Appleton
    3. Following is the text of a 1913 note from Miss Annie Halbert of Carlisle PA concerning the LYNE family. At the time, my great grandmother was seeking to join the DAR. If anyone can fill in any blanks, esp the BEAR or ZIMMERMAN/CARPENTER wives, I'd appreciate it very much. This is the 2d of two letters I've posted on this subject. Rob Appleton -------- Carlisle, Penna 143 S. Hanover St My dear Mrs. Appleton, I feel that I owe you many apologies for delay in replying to your letter. Before the Line reunion I was exceedingly busy, and since that day have had company and such busy times as to render letter writing impossible. Then too, I had to obtain the necessary information from a member of the DAR, thus causing a little longer delay. In order to become a member of the DAR, I suppose you know, it is necessary to furnish dates of birth, death, and marriage from your Revolutionary ancestor down to yourself. I do not know just how much of the history you are able to give but sent you what I think will be of value to you. The first ancestor of whom we have any knowledge is George Lyne (spelled Lyne in those days). We all trace our ancestry to one of his seven sons or daughters. Are you of the branch of William or David? Hoping this will be what you desire, I am, Yours sincerely June 26, 13 Annie ?. 2. Robert Appleton
    3. Following is the text of a 1913 note from Miss Lillie Huston of Carlisle PA concerning the LYNE family. At the time, my great grandmother was seeking to join the DAR. If anyone can fill in any blanks, esp the BEAR or ZIMMERMAN/CARPENTER wives, I'd appreciate it very much. Rob Appleton -------- Sept 28, 13 My dear Mrs. Appleton The information you sent me I gave to Miss Halbert. It is very necessary that you a have a direct line from yourself back to William Lyne and his father,George Lyne. I think that I might be able to give you the missing link. George Lyne died 1788; his wife Salome (Zimmerman Anglicized afterwards to Carpenter) Lyne died 107. Then it will be necessary for you to give all of their children, the year of their birth and to whom married if possible. You get two Application papers from your Chapter for George Lyne. Then two more Application papers for William Lyne, born April 12-1749, died June 12-1822 and his wife Maria (Bear) Lyne died 1826. Next you give the names of all their children, their birth, and to whom married. Their daughter Mary Lyne born January 6 - 1780 married Philip Spangler April 28-1807. Am sorry, I do not have the rest of the dates. Their son, George Spangler, married Nancy Myers. By writing to your Aunts you might be able to get the births and dates of deaths of your line. Mother gave me the information as Mary Lyne was her Aunt, a sister to her father (David Lyne). You have two ancestors in the Revolutionary War. The father George and his three sons, David, William, and Abraham all served in the same company. Penna Archives Series 2nd Volume 15 page 626. If you wish you can add to what you have that the old Bible is still in the family also (the sword of William Lyne is still in the family (you add this to William's paper) My papers were both accepted so I don't think you will have any trouble. I put in my paper my ancestor assisted in Revo war as minute man. It is only necessary to give the names of all the children, etc of the man who served in the war. After you get your 4 application papers you will understand what I mean. Any member of the DAR will explain how you go about in filling the papers our. If their (sic) us any thing you do not understand, write and I will try to make it plainer. May I also make a suggestion to join as a Life member $25.00. You will find it will be much cheaper in the end. We have several members who have already paid in about $35.00 and next April talking of raising both yearly dues and Life Member dues. We expect three new members next week at our DAR meeting and they will join as Life Members. I am a Life Member. When you fill out your application papers sell Lyne as that is the way it is in the Archives. Did want to answer your letter at once, but my sister, her little daughter and husband were home from Kansas and then last week was our County Fair. Now everything has settled down to be quiet again. What is the name of your Chapter? Do hope you will have no trouble in following out your line. A few dates of the Spanglers on down to your generation's all that is necessary, Just the year if births, deaths, and married. Will be so glad to welcome you as a DAR member. Would be very glad to hear from you soon. Your cousin, Lillie Huston 152 E. High St. Carlisle, Pa Registrar of Cumberland County DAR Chapter

    3. I don't know that we're connected. Baden is Northwest of Schaffhausen by some distance and Zimmermann being a very common name (carpenter, I'm sure you know) the likelihood isn't high. 3. Rob, that's fantastic. I'm in the midst of translating Dr. J's obituary from High German-using a internet program. He was born in Trasadingen or Trafadingen-I need to go back and look at it now that I know the difference between the f and s that are similiar. He had a brother, Konrad, a sister Ursula, my ggg grandfather's 2nd wife, and Magdalena, my ggg grandmother and Karl Friedrich Doehring's 1st wife. He also has a son named Albert who died in California-I found his obit by complete accident looking for another. I'm wrong on the Missouri Synod-it was the North America Evangelical Synod. Hopefully, your going to read Trasadingen or Trafadingen and say we must be family. Let me know. Chris Doehring St. Louis, MO PS Is there a name I should be looking for in his obit? It's 3 pages long-small type-and I've only scanned it. Rob Zimmerman wrote: > Chris Doehring- > I have traced my ancestors back to Canton Schaffhausen, Switzerland, and > would love to compare notes. 3. This message forwarded by the listowner. For those of you aware of C|Net Central.... Stephanie Berger, a producer for their subsidiary show The Web, kindly let me know that this weekend they'll be running a show with a section on genealogy...she said that they tried to include as many sites as they could.... You can check it out, and the time it's on by you, at http://www.cnet.com/Content/Tv/Studio/Preview/ Unfortunately, it only runs on the Sci Fi Channel, so if you don't get that, you won't be able to see it. However, we'll post a transcript of what they said about USGW after it's over.<G> megan -- Megan Zurawicz, National Coordinator USGenWeb [email protected] * [email protected]
