    3. Yvonne, After reading your message I visited the RootsWeb site and did not see the Palladium banner, so figured the story must be accurate. I passed along the word about RootsWeb to several other lists that I belong to. One person emailed me to ask how I found out about this. They had seen a similar posting on another list. How did you hear about it? I was really sorry to learn that RootsWeb had lost the sponsorship. Let's hope that people, particularly people who use the lists on a regular basis, will rally with financial support.....something long overdue. Good wishes for a merry Christmas to you and your family. And thanks again for bringing the topic of support for RootsWeb to the attention of the Zimmerman list. 3. Thank you, Yvonne, for letting us know about Palladium. I did not realize the sponsorship had been dropped. What a blow! I just sent a message to the Philly list responding to a list participant that thought RootsWeb was just another "business". For those not familiar with RootsWeb - they are the people that make this list possible :) - here is the message I sent: It is a compliment to RootsWeb that people would assume that it is a well operated "business". However, the RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative is a far cry from any corporation, it is rather a grass roots effort founded about 10 years ago by Karen Isaacson and Brian Leverich. Karen's budding interest in genealogy and their familiarity with computers and later that new fangled world called the Internet, helped them and a group of volunteers launch RootsWeb. Karen, Brian and other volunteers have donated not only their time (a lots of it, from maintaining the computer systems that operate RootsWeb to providing online help and assistance in maintaining the ROOTS-L mailing list and the RootsWeb Surname List) but their own money as well. The cost for maintaining and upgrading the servers has mushroomed as the size and scope of RootsWeb has grown. It boggles the mind to realize how far RootsWeb has come. According to RootsWeb's home site: "RootsWeb hosts more than 2,700 Websites and 3,600 mailing lists. RootsWeb now has a dozen servers and five T1s worth of bandwidth, and handles more than 1,300,000 Web hits and 3,000,000 pieces of e-mail on a typical day. RootsWeb expects to be adding several more main servers and a sixth (and possibly seventh) T1 within the next few weeks. " Compare that average of over 1 million hits a day in 1998, to the 50,000 hits that was considered a BIG day in 1996! To learn more about RootsWeb, the ROOTS-L mailing lists, the RootsWeb Surname List, visit: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/ http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/history.html http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html >From what I have read, the people behind RootsWeb have no desire to take RootsWeb "corporate". They believe strongly that information should be available with free access and they continue to make that possible. Realistically, however, how feasible is it for a few individuals to continue to fund something the size of RootsWeb? For anyone who uses RootsWeb on a regular basis, give it some thought and see how you might help the effort as well. 3. I've been subscribed for quite a while and never have posted. I have a grandmother who may be a Zimmerman instead of Murr as her maiden name. No one in the Heishman family seems to know the origin of Sarah unless I haven't met the right person. I don't really know where to start in KY because Andrew came from Hardy Co. WVA and I don't know when he left WVA or where he went before coming to Indiana. He was an original land owner in Harrison Co IN by 1821. It looks like Sarah was living in Indiana when they got married. 1 Andrew* Heishman b: 1784 in West Virginia d: July 29, 1865 in Harrison County, Indiana . +Sarah* Zimmerman (Murr) b: December 10, 1806 in Kentucky? m: March 16, 1826 d: September 20, 1888 in Harrison County, Indiana ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Clarice Jane Snyder mailto:[email protected] Web pages: (Music) http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/2059 (Genealogy) http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/s/n/y/Clarice-J-Snyder Harrison County, Indiana http://www.rootsweb.com/~inharris/surname.html See the above for my Shenandoah Valley VA, Washington Co.TN-NC, Harrison, Floyd, Crawford Co. 1. Re: [ZIMMERMAN-L] ZIMMERMANN name; Gatekeeper
    2. Hi Mike Yes, you are right --- "Zimmer" means "room [of a house, etc.]". "Zimmermann" does mean carpenter, so I suppose the exact meaning is "person who constructs rooms". Through very quick use of the delete key, I erased your message of a few days ago in which you mentioned the exact title of your gate-keeper ancestor in Minden. I remember, though, that the title said exactly WHICH gate he was the keeper of. Minden presumably had more than one gate, and he was the keeper of the ___-Tor. (Michelstor or Steintor or whatever). If you ever ran across a map of the old walled city, you could find where that particular gate is. Maybe you could send a letter to "Stadtarchiv, Minden, Germany" and see if they have any information. They would almost certainly understand English. I see there are two Mindens in Germany, one in the so-called Sauerland, and the other in Westfalen. (Must be pretty close to each other.) The one in the Sauerland seems to be pretty small; almost certainly would not have an Archiv, and is most probably not a Stadt. Its zipcode is 54310. Minden i. Westfalen IS a Stadt and must also have an Archiv, so the address would probably work. (Whether they answer or not is another question.) They have several zipcodes there; I would try this address: Stadtarchiv D-32423 Minden i. Westfalen Germany. Worth a try, maybe? Best wishes, Alan Leighton

    2. Donald M. Zimmerman
    3. Below, I notice the name Christian Zimmerman who married in 1768. On board the ship "Patiece" that came to Philadelphia in 1749 was a Christian Zimmerman. This could be the same man by the dates shown. There were 3 Zimmermans on that ship. My GGGG Grandfather Johan Jost Zimmerman and family, Christian Zimmerman, and Johan Peter Zimmerman. We don't know if the Zimmermans on that ship were related. Can there be a connection among them? Johan Jost was from Trupbach (near Siegen) Westphalia, Germany. I lived in the Rheinlanfd-Pfalz area of SW Germany while serving at Ramstein Air Base. I'm familiar with those towns. They are very close to the French border. The largest city is Saarbrucken. Volklingen is just west of the city and is located on the east bank of the Saar River. Neunkirchen is northeast of the city and Ottweiler is just north of Neunkirchen. Rohrbach is south of Neunkirchen. Rech is NW of Saarbrucken on the west bank of the Saar River. There is no Rohrbacher or Recht in Germany. Koelpin is indeed near Poland. It probably was in Poland at the time of those ancestors. It is about 60 km west of the border, situated in Brandenburg SE of Berlin. My GGGG Grandfather, Johann Jost Zimmerman, came to Philadelphia in 1754 from Siegen, Germany. One of his sons, David was born in PA and moved to Ohio. One of David's sons was Adam born 15 cMay 1819. We have no more information on Adam than that fact. Donald M. Zimmerman Breckenridge, MI

    1. Re: [ZIMMERMAN-L] ZIMMEMNANNS FROM KOELPIN/KIELPIN
    2. Hi folks "Zimmermann" means "carpenter" in German, and as such is simply a name similar to Taylor, Cooper, etc. (Schneider and Büttner in German --- I suppose every culture has such names.) A person with this name could have been Jewish, but probably was not. Best wishes, Alan Leighton
