Gov. of VA >From Copy of Bounty Land Warrant 39222-160-55 on Joshua Younger National Archives Copy "A copy of my discharge: The bearer hereof Joshua Younger was a private in the 12th VA Regiment of the Continental Establishment until he received a wound which rendered him unfit for further service when he was regularly discharged by me, a Colonel of the sd Regiment after which he was placed on the List of Pensioners. I further testify that he was esteemed a good soldier while in the service and that he has from every information which that I have been able to obtain maintained the character of a respectable citizen. Given under my hand at Richmond this 30th day of Jan 1807. Nicholas County, State of Kentucky 22 Jun 1818 This day Joshua Younger appeared before me, John Trimble, one of the Circuit Judges in and for the state of Kentucky and made oath that in Jan 1777 he enlisted as a private soldier for and during the war in the 12th VA Regt.... and served until May, 1779 at which time he was discharged...served in Capt. Vance's Company...appears to have enlisted on 18 Jan 1777, During the war. Born, in the State of Virginia. Declaration Mar 1829 At a Circuit Court holden for the County of Nicholas at the Courthouse in the town of Carlisle on 31 March 1829. Joshua Younger produced his original claim and schedule for the purpose of obtaining a pension under the laws of Congress to wit," Original claim -Declaration in order to be placed on the pension list under the act of 18 March 1818 County of Nicholas and Sate of kentucky. On 31 March 1829 personally appeared in open court (being a court of record for the 2nd judicial District in the County, held in the town of Carlisle) Joshua Younger resident of sd county, aged 74 yrs., who first was duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provisions made by the acts of Congress 18 march 1818 and the 1st of May 1820. That Joshua Younger enlisted during the war in January 1777, in the State of Virginia in the company commanded by Capt. William Vaugh (Vance), in the Regiment commanded by Col. James Woods in the line of the State of Virginia on the Continental Establishment and continued to serve in the sd Corps until sometime in May 1779, when he was discharged in consequence of receiving a wound in the town of Winchester (his pay records say Jersey at Short Hills) of the State of Virginia. That he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to pension except the present, that his name is not on the pension rolls of any state except the one transmitted, which is in your files. And the following are the reasons for not making an earlier application for a pension. My first declaration was prepared by Gen. Andrew S. Hughes, attorney at law; when they were returned to me he handed them to me and told me that my claim was not allowed and I being old and ignorant never made further application until now. My occupation is that of farmer, but am unable to follow it. My wife was 62 yrs old last Dec. I have one son and his wife living with me; his name is Garrett, aged 22; his wife 20. Neither myself not my wife have been able to support ourselves by labor for many years past, and I am much indebted for necessities to support on. And what little property I have will be sacrificed to pay my debts, and will not pay half of it. My property consists of one mare (23 yrs old) $5.00, nine head of cattle $35, one plow, 2 pair of geese, ax $950, three bedsteads and bedding $36, household and kitchen furniture $20.00, eleven head of sheep $5.50, twelve goats, one sow $8.00. Total amount $119.00. Paraphrasing the next paragraph - legalese for "he has not disposed of any property in order to obtain the pension". The court found his testimony to be true and affixed their opinion to his application.
