I am writing this to answer a question about DAR. Membership Eligibility: Any woman who is no less than 18 years of age and can prove lineal, blood line descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence. She must provide documentation for each birth, marriage and death as well as the ancestor's service. The documentation must, without a reasonable doubt, show her lineage to the ancestor. Acceptable Service: Signers of the Dec. of Ind.; Military Service both Federal or State Militia; Civil Service; Government (State, County, City) Officials; Patriotic Service such as ministers who gave patriotic sermons, those who gave supplies, etc. There are many others. Perhaps, as one member stated, in the beginning documentation was sketchy. I am not sure. But I do know that is not the case today. Each piece of decendancy information is very carefully checked and documented. Each copy of birth certificates, bible pages, etc. must be notarized and proven. If not, the papers are sent back and must be resubmitted. How do I know? I, too, am a member who has sent in several sets of papers. I have been waiting 2 years for them to approve the new line I submitted on Michael Karn/Kern, Bedford Co. VA. They are presently backed up on the Supplemental Ancestors due to the large volume they receive and the documentation they must cover to approve them. I am presently Vice-Regent of our Chapter; have been Registrar; and, have just recently served as a "Genie Bug" in Washington D.C. (which is how I know what must be documented). I am very proud to be a member of one of the few patriotic organizations available to women. I would hope that any one of you who can prove your lineage would at least attend a meeting in your area. I am sure you will see what I mean. Sorry, but just had to give my thoughts on the organization. Donna Green Nash
Well said! As you describe, it is not an easy task to dot every i and cross every t but that is what is required. One of the goals is preserving history and their genealogical library in Washington is without peer. If you haven't researched there, you ought to put it on your itinerary.
