PLEASE FORGIVE SOME OF THE FOLLOWING GLARING GENERALIZATIONS: I AM THINKING ALOUD. But if any of you have ideas or answers to the thought/questions posed, please let us know. 1. Religion: it has been said that our Younger forebears were staunch Presbyterians and members of the Cumberland Presbyterian church. I find no record of that anywhere? I find names on religious petitions (mostly James), but the petitions are hard to read. 2. Culture/socialization: Our VA Youngers lived amongst and married people with English names...with exception of John Ferguson's daughter, Sarah. There were no Irish or Scottish naming practices used by the VA Youngers; if so, it would be easier to determine the parents, grandparents, etc. I have been able with most of my Scots and Irish ancestors to easily determine their parentage by the order in which they named their children. 3. Why did the VA Youngers stay in an area populated at least 75% by English immigrants? Why didn't they, as many Scotsmen and Scots- Irish did, migrate from PA to NC/SC (I know...some did, but very few). Anybody have Youngers in PA? Between 1600-1800? When James Younger ended in SC/NC, he supposedly came from a Welsh church community. ???? 4. I have found that many of the VA Youngers could read and write. Where did they get their education? Self taught? 5. My gg grandfather was a tailor...that's a skill that was handed down from generation to generation. ??? So...let's think...1. religion 2. migration patterns 3. occupations and skills 4. education 5. socioculturazation. By the way, in the VA Library is a picture of John Younger's house in Pittsylvania.
Interesting train of thought....There was a Charles Lee in VA who left a will in 1785(apparently no wife or children). He had a sister named Sidney Lee. Charles Lee Younger and Sarah S. named a daughter Sydney. Also, there were two Charles Lees in VA who married Elizabeths [on a FTM cd; need to get better records]. Will go to library. See what I can find. Probably will lead nowhere...but one never knows. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brownie MacKie" <BMacKie1@compuserve.com> To: <YOUNGER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 01, 2001 9:52 AM Subject: [YOUNGER] Questions posed > PLEASE FORGIVE SOME OF THE FOLLOWING GLARING GENERALIZATIONS: I AM > THINKING ALOUD.
