-YOUNGER, Alexander {Is this Wilma H's "scandalous Alexander"? and what was the scandal?} 1675/02/06 MCW witn/w John Parramore 1675/03/11 JUD2 1675/04/01 ESMd immigrated key: MCW=Maryland Calendar of Wills, by Jane Baldwin Cotton. JUD2=Somerset Judicial Records, 9 Nov 1674-11 Sep 1677, Deed Liber L2. ESMd=Early Settlers of Maryland, by Gust Skordas. If this Alexander was witness to a Will in 1675 he was born before 1654 in order to be 21 years old or older at that time. My candidate is Alexander Younger, son of Alexander Younger-Margaret Steinson, husband of Jonat Gemmil and father of Alexander b 1664, Daniel b 1666 and Elizabeth b 1670 -all baptisms in Glasgow. Alexander Younger, son of Thomas Younger-Anna Smith was not born until 1681. --------------- A List of Servants Transported by Samuell Gibbons, master, of Bristoll in the Ship Batchelor of Bristoll 1674. John Younger Mary Younger John Stinson ----------------- Maryland Know all men by these presents that I Robert Ridgely of St. Mary's City for a valuable consideration already Recieved do ... (153) 1674 Lib. MM - ... Assign, Sell and make over unto his Excellency Charles Calvert all my right, Title and (607) Interest of, in and to twenty Rights to Land to me due by assignment from Samuell Gibbons of Bristoll, merchant, due the said Samuell for Transporting James Crawford, John Walker, Humphrey Tilton, Jeffery Thompson, Abraham Murphy, Cornelius Rowarke, William Bell, Wm Nowell, Robert Gibson, John Duglass, Patrick Magee, John Younger, John Lithcoe, Cornelius Mackmaicklin, Daniell Guordon, William Bullock, John Pearson, Daniell Macklegar, Manns Mahallan and Henry Magee into this province to Inhabit in the Ship Batchelor of Bristoll this present year as appears upon record. To have and to hold the Said twenty Rights to Land to him the Said Charles Calvert his heirs and assigns forever, Witness my hand and Seale this Sixth of november in the 43th year of the Dominion of Corcilius & Anno Domini 1674. Witnesses: John Blomfeild Robert Ridgely {Seale} Robert Ellis ------------------- Know all men by these presents that I Robert Ridgely of St. Mary's County do Assign, Sell and make over unto John Bosman of Somerset County all my right, Title and Interest of, in and to four hundred acres of Land rights to me due by assignment from Samuell Gibbons due the said Gibbons for Transporting Richard Odean, Mary Milihan, Richard Wilkeson, Eliz: Kirkwood, Jane Hambleton, Mary Younger, Jane Mullican, and Jane Watson into this province to Inhabit, To have and to hold the Said eight Rights to Land to him the Said John Bosman, his heirs and Assigns forever, Witness my hand and Seale this 6th of November 1674 Witnesses: John Blomfeild Robert Ridgely {Seale} Robert Ellis 6 November 1674 Rights 152, fod - Warrant Then Granted the Said John Bosman of Somerset County for four hundred acres of Land it being due to him by virtue of the consideration in the aforegoing Assignment - Certificate return the 6th of February next. Judging from entries from "The Bristol Registers of Servants sent to Foreign Plantations 1654-86" by Peter Wilson Coldham, the "Batchelor of Bristol" was clearly picking up passengers from Bristol, England in the 1670's. The voyage from Bristol, England to St. Mary's, Maryland would have taken the ship around the south of Ireland, passing the ports at Dublin, Wexford, Waterford and Cork, all and any of which would be natural emigration ports, especially for Catholics, who would wish to go to Maryland, rather than Virginia, which was chiefly Church of England.
No, the scandalous Alexander is the one who immigrated in the 1600,s married Mary Claw, a widow, and was caught defrauding her of her deceased husband's property. He skipped town and no one has been able to find a paper trace of him after that time. He, of course, does not fit the timing for the person who was paying for schooling. And the Alexander who was married Rebecca Mills was dead by 1727 so who is this other Alexander? Your guess is as good as any at this point. We don't seem to have any other evidence about him -deeds, wills, etc. We have only this one piece of evidence declaring his existence. Basically with my exercise I was trying to demonstrate that there may be another unidentified family head from whom some of the unplaced Youngers (such as the William who married Patience) have descended. The location is right, the time is right. We just don't have the cast of characters. Has anyone ever looked at early New Kent VA (King and Queen County later) records? I haven't. If we haven't looked. how do we know there is not something there for us? Marcus Younger from King and Queen County is hanging out there by himself also yet we know there is a close link between him and Thomas Younger. We have both the William who married Patience unplaced as well as Marcus. There must be a connection. What is it? It is so much easier to share a piece of documentation and let the documentation speak for itself than to express an abstract thought yet sometimes I think we need abstract thinking as well. It sometimes guides us in our searches. I have run across another question that I have never expressed. When Williamson Younger died, his children were very young but there was an Armistead Younger who became guardian of the children. Who in the world was he? Williamson's son Armistead was not old enough to be guardian to his sisters and brothers so we have another player who is over 21 and unidentified. As I said before, we are far from having enough facts to answer all our questions.
