Same family. Two different census dates, two different kids giving the information, and two different census takers......can you imagine how hard it must have been to do the census before computers? Door to door...boundaries changing...dumb census takers who didn't know what their boundaries were. Etc. They also took the census from anybody in the house who was willing to give information. ----- Original Message ----- From: "JYG" <jyg@kc.rr.com> To: <YOUNGER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 06, 2001 1:08 AM Subject: [YOUNGER] Two Thomases/ Two Elinors > > Can someone tell me where these belong? I am inclined to agree with Brownie, but I do have questions. I know Giles and Lawrence jare adjoining counties and the census taker might not have known just where the boundary was, but would there have been that much discrepancy in the ages given. Also there is a child Homer in one family and three more children named in the other. It just looks a little odd when you start comparing these differences between the two listings. My theory is this: Thomas and Ellen moved from Giles to Lawrence during the time the census was being taken. The older children are with them in Lawrence Co., perhaps the younger children were left with friends or family during the move. Homer should be Hannah (I believe). That's all the sense I can make of it. ----- Original Message ----- From: Helen McMindes <calark2@yournet.com> To: <YOUNGER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 06, 2001 9:01 AM Subject: Re: [YOUNGER] Two Thomases/ Two Elinors > I am inclined to agree with Brownie, but I do have questions. Thanks Brownie, too many similarities to be anything else. Oh yeah! I know about the mistakes on censuses and what you mean about the info being given by whoever answered the door. One of my ancestors was named Francis Marion Henson, definitely a male yet in a census he was listed as Miranda! We only found him because he was living with his father-in-law who was head of household, but there he was with his wife. I cannot complain too much though, some of these census hold keys to clues etc. Recently I found Frank and Jesse James in an 1880 census, can you believe them allowing themselves to be recorded? You never know what you will find. By the way everyone, last night I went back over the 1850 censuses and made .gif copies of them and attached them to the heads of household in my genealogy program. So, now I don't have to go hunt them down if anyone wants copies. It is also a better way to look back at them, for the ones which were hard to read.
