    3. Be patient with me, follow my logic, and tear apart my hypothses- Only three Humphreys have been identified- * Humphrey b 1677 and patriarch of the Kent County MD family. He can be eliminated because he was dead before the probate of the Miller will. * Humphrey b 1782, son of the patriarch * Humphrey, son of Nehemiah who migrated to Ohio. He can be eliminated because he was born after the probate of the Miller will. This process leaves Humphrey b 1782 and son of Humphrey, the patriarch, to be analyzed. Next I audited all the Kent County MD records for the name Miller. As an aside I found a George Dunkin named in the accounts of the estate of Humphrey (b1677). That told us only that a Dunkin family was known (rather well) by the Humphrey Younger family in Kent County. My first thought was that the Thomas who "begot a baseborn child" must have been the son of the patriarch. He would have been 57 years old at the time which seemed a little out of character for a man of those years. Further research indicated that the estate of John Younger paid a bail for John's son Thomas within a year or two of the court record previously cited. He would have been the patriarch's grandson - and of probably a more pationate nature - This has led me to conclude that this entry belongs to Thomas, son of John, son of Humphrey (the patriarch) Back to Miller- A reminder: John Younger, Humphrey, the patriarch's son, married Sarah Kennard Maryland Calendar of Wills, Vol. VI, p. 57 Daniel Pearce will Written 20 June, Probated 4 Jan 1727 * To wife Mary dwelling plantation with half the lands adjoining during her lifetime to be divided between son Andrew and daughter Mary; division to be made by James Smyth and Arthur Miller, Sr. * To daughter Sarah, Arthur, son of Arthur Miller, Sr. and Sarah, wife of Arthur Miller, Sr personalty. * To son Andrew and heirs 40 acres adjoining "Tibbott" given by father, deceased, to said son. 200 acres "New Holland" bought of William Burrar, and personalty lent to Isaac Caulk * To son in law Thomas Hynson and Isabelle, his wife, and their heirs 200 acres of "Freindship". 400 acres "New Munster" on the Elk River in Cecil County. Should Thomas Hynson and Isabel die without issue, the said lands are to revert to son Andrew and his heirs. * To wife and three children, viz. Isabell, Andrew and Sarah, personal estate to be divided equally making allowance for that portion already given to Isabell. Rents from the two plantations to be used for schooling of son Andrew and Arthur Miller, Sr. * Test: John Johnson, Edward Fottrell. John Evans Researcher's Note: Daniel Pearce married Mary Caulk 4 Feb 1704. Mary Pearce left money to sons Caulk. See below: Maryland Calendar of Wills, Vol. VIII, p. 255 Mary Pearce, widow, Kent County Written 26 May 1740, Probated 3 Dec 1743 To sons: Oliver, Isaac, planters of Cecil County and Joseph Caulk, executors To daughters: Mary Wilson, Sarah Kennard[probably John Younger's mother in law], Isabel Hynson and Sarah Hans, widow To grandsons: John, Oliver, William, Jacob and Benjamin Caulk To granddaughter: Mary Caulk To nephew Sutton Quincy and Joyce the blind daughter of neice Joyce Smith, entire estate, including moneys now in the hands of John Handbury and Samuel Hyde, merchants in London. Test: Hugh Jones and Otho Othoson Kent County MD Records 26-90 #735 Sarah Kennard Written 21 March 1748, Probated 15 Apr 1749 To daughter Sarah Kennard; to beloved sons Phil and William Ringold Exors: Phil Kennard and William Ringold Witnesses: Elizabeth Craugh, Mary Bateman, Samuel Groome So what does all that mean really? - not a whole lot except that Arthur Miller had interactions with the Humphrey Younger family in Kent County MD. This brings my attention back to the remaining Humphrey Younger who was not eliminated. We know that Humphrey was married to a woman named Mary by 1853 because of a deed. It is the first identified transaction for Humphrey, If he was married to Ann Miller, Ann was dead by 25 July 1750 when Arthur Miller's will was written. The one and only Nehemiah thus far identified was born in 1749 just prior to the writing of the will. This Nehemiah named his son Humphrey. The dates do not eliminate this Humphrey as the subject of the will. In fact they corroborate them. To this time Nehemiah has been associated with Lewis Younger because they were the only two Youngers in Anne Arundel County and because Lewis was old enough to be Nehemiah's father, it has been assumed that he was. I have removed Lewis from a family relationship with Nehemiah and am awaiting some critique from the List before making any more ass-u-mptions. Let me hear from you.
