Since it has come up a time or two over the last couple of weeks, I assume nearly everyone is familiar with the book "Armistead Younger (1811-1883) Descendants in Stone County, Arkansas". This book was used as the basis of some of my family's research, and I've noticed more than a couple of folks cite it as a source. When I started my genealogy project, I had noticed what appeared to be a few editorial mistakes, and set it aside until I received the last digest. So I quote pages 3-4 (with some formatting changes): I. Alexander Younger, Immigrant, (father unknown), was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He wrote his will in 1725 and died in 1727 Halifax Co. VA (Will Book 5, page 152), md. Mary Mills who died 1719. According to "Youngers, 1680's to 1980's", Alexander came to York Co. VA in 1680's via Worcester, England. He then migrated along the Rappahannock around Williamburg and Yorktown in Essex Co. VA. Before 1700, he married Rebecca Mills, daughter of John and Sarah Mills of Essex Co. VA. Alexander was a tobacco farmer near Rappahannock, VA. Children of Alexander and Mary Mills Younger: 1- Thomas Younger II, born c1700 VA, died 1749 (ancestor of the Youngers in Stone Co. AR) 2- John Younger was born 1702 3- Elizabeth Younger was born 1704 4- Suzanna Younger was born 1706 5- Mary Younger was born 1712 6- Anne Younger was born 1715 7- Janetta Younger was born 1717, md. 1737 to John Price 8- James Younger was born 1720, md, Anna Nash (ancestor of Helen Turney McMindes, Mabel Motes, Dreat Younger, and Youngers in Searcy Co. AR) II. Thomas Younger, (Alexander), born 1700 VA. First wife died c1749. Children: 1- Thomas Younger III was born in Essex Co. VA; died 1791 Halifax Co. VA. 2- Mark Younger md. 1750 Sara Ferguson, dau of John and Sarah Ferguson of Essex Co. VA (see his will in Essex Co. VA) III. Thomas Younger, (Alexander, Thomas), born Essex Co. VA; died c1791 in Halifax Co. VA; wife unkown. Fifteen children: Children: 1- Sarah Younger md. Mr Estes 2- James Younger 3- Joseph Younger md. Sally Brown 4- Thomas Younger 5- Mary Younger md. Mr. Fretwell 6- Jesse Younger md. Temperance Brown 7- William Younger, born__; died 1801; md. Mary Mollie Watkins 8- Elizabeth Younger md. John Legrand 9- Nancy Younger md. Mr. Smallman 10- Katy Younger md. Martin Brown 11- Dolly Younger md. William Light 12- Lucy Younger 13- Rebecca Younger md. John Franklin 14- Rachel Younger 15- Samuel Younger So These pages raise a few questions for me: 1- How many Thomases are there between William and Alexander, and can we document it? 2- What of the above matches the known documentation? 3- Could the Mark Younger above, be the Marcus Younger who witnessed Thomas' will? In regard to this last question, it would certainly explain the relationship between him and William. I know that many of us would rather not tear apart our family trees, but I seem to be getting more and more baffled the longer I study this. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
I have been cautioned to treat the printed word with skepticism. Just because something is in print does not necessarily make it true. I treat family group sheets with the same skepticism. You are wise to question what you read. Every day we are modifying and refining previous research and conclusions here on the List. We see it happening before our very eyes and it is good. No one should allow themselves to be "married" to a particular conclusion because just when we do, a new fact comes along and everything changes. That doesn't mean we shouldn't write or read the work of previous researchers. We just need to keep our inquiring minds. As to the relationship between Thomas and Marcus, I think we can be very clear that Marcus is not a son of Thomas. Let me explain why. We are lucky that in his will Thomas named all his children. Some folks say "the rest of my children" without naming them but in this case, all the children were named. We are even more fortunate that there were several settlements so that any child who had been entitled to an inheritance was specifically named. Thomas named: Daughters: Susannah, Mary Fretwell, Elizabeth Legrand, Nancy Smallman, Katey Brown Dolly, Lucy, Rebecca and Rachel Sons: Samuel, James, Joseph, Thomas,Jesse, William In the settlement Halifax County VA Minute Book 11:47, 48, 48B August Court 1842 We learn that Thomas and Mary were sister and brother of the "half blood". That is how we know that Thomas had married more than once. By this time Mary Fretwell had remarried and was now Mary Scudder. Had Marcus been even a child of the "half blood" he would have been named to get his pittance. It is the inclination of we hobbyists to want to "fill in" all the holes and if someone doesn't fit, we squeeze him in any way. That's what happened here - and with good intentions I might add. We all succumb to that in some degree. S. I want to make a correction regarding the information about James Younger, ancestor of Helen Turney McMindes, etc. He was not my ancestor, but was the ancestor of my first husband, Don Turney. Don was the son of Martha Alice Younger and Elmer Turney. Martha was the daughter of Jasper Newton Younger, the son of Alexander, the son of Thomas and on back.
