I think the FTM is the best as far as layout is concerned. But the company makes it very hard to be flexible with it. It's hard to delete anything, and impossible to copy and paste. You end up with two "Harold Youngers" one with a wife and one without and can't make heads nor tails of which one to get rid of. They have too many updates for which they charge too much. Personally, I believe that uploading your family tree to ANY program is not an especially good idea, so since my initial mistake of uploading a Younger file to Family Tree way back when I was a novice at this (it's been erased), I haven't bothered. There were so many mistakes in dates and people in that first file I uploaded, I blush just thinking about it. I like Kindred Konnections and Ancestry for the bits and pieces of information I get from them. I haven't tried any other programs. And now that I'm getting closer to putting together my "book"....a compilation of information for my children...I wish I had a better vehicle for my information.
The IGI one may be the right one, next time I'm at the FHC I will look him up. Browine- Boy I agree about FTM, they have their foot in everything. I bought their software but don't like it at all. I think I have purchased about every genealogy program out there. I use Generations, the DVD version is great. Wilma- Sorry about the pricing, I belong to several databases and get the charges mixed up. I think it's $19.95 a month for the 1900. You do have to learn how to access some things by going through "backdoors," but we seem to do that wherever we go for information. I do wish they would get the rest of the 1850 censuses and I do remember someone saying all of the censuses would have been online by May last year. I think there is a lot of competition going on. I did join one group and they still do not have anything on their site, so we do have to beware of some of these. Genealogylibrary does add 3 books a day to their site and I use it daily. They also have reduced their rates and I think it is $30 a year for the 1900 census and they have now completed all states now. The only thing I don't use and for me anyway, wasted money, was the Trees they offer. You can get them free on ancestry.com most of the time. Besides they have too many entries of guessing dates from this year to that and for me that is not helpful. Just my opinion. Linda in KC

Wilma- I have access to the 1850 following through genealogylibrary.com: AL, AR, CA, CT, IL, IN, KY, LA, ME, MA, MS, NH, NM, NC, OR, PA, RI, TN, TX, UT, VT AND VA. They are indexed. I also have access to the 1900 also indexed for all of the US, also through the same place. I have access to other censuses through ancestry.com but they are not complete and are not indexed, so I don't use them too often unless I have a page number, which is how I found the 1880 you posted. By the way thankyou for giving the page numbers. Thanks Brownie, too many similarities to be anything else. Oh yeah! I know about the mistakes on censuses and what you mean about the info being given by whoever answered the door. One of my ancestors was named Francis Marion Henson, definitely a male yet in a census he was listed as Miranda! We only found him because he was living with his father-in-law who was head of household, but there he was with his wife. I cannot complain too much though, some of these census hold keys to clues etc. Recently I found Frank and Jesse James in an 1880 census, can you believe them allowing themselves to be recorded? You never know what you will find. By the way everyone, last night I went back over the 1850 censuses and made .gif copies of them and attached them to the heads of household in my genealogy program. So, now I don't have to go hunt them down if anyone wants copies. It is also a better way to look back at them, for the ones which were hard to read. What state/county is covered in your 1850 census? ----- Original Message ----- From: JYG <jyg@kc.rr.com> To: <YOUNGER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 06, 2001 10:47 AM Subject: Re: [YOUNGER] Two Thomases/ Two Elinors
I am inclined to agree with Brownie, but I do have questions. I know Giles and Lawrence jare adjoining counties and the census taker might not have known just where the boundary was, but would there have been that much discrepancy in the ages given. Also there is a child Homer in one family and three more children named in the other. It just looks a little odd when you start comparing these differences between the two listings. Willie, I found in the FOTY book the reference to Jesse, Jr. will (WB25:488, probated 1891) wherein it says, "mentions the children of deceased son, Mary Susan and William James Younger". Would you happen to know the name of this deceased son, born/died/who married, etc.? Mary Susan (Mollie S. in 1880 census) is 12 and Wm. J. is 11, both born VA. I'd like to include them in my file but need parents for them. Thanks Wilma
