1850 Halifax Co. VA census, family 193 Charles L. Younger, 28 Carpenter VA Mary A.B. 24 VA John, 5 VA James, 2 VA Can anyone place him with parents?
William M. Younger and Martha A. Woodworth were my g-grandparents. My source of information has been a Younger family bible, probably started by Margaret Hinson Younger, and census in which I have found this family and descendants. An article in the Pope Co. History Vol I, page 836. Pope Co. Historical Society written about William and Martha and their family gave me addition information. William M. Younger (James, Thomas) was born June 12, 1845 in Giles Co., TN. He married Martha A. Woodworth, daughter to Nathan Woodworth and Pricilla. She was born abt 1850 in AR. William and Martha were married October 3, 1866 in Searcy Co., AR. William's Mother was Margaret Hinson b. Oct. 24, 1817 TN. His father James b. abt 1812 GA. was the son of Thomas Younger (b. abt 1791 in N.C.) and his first wife Rachel Hendricks (b.abt 1791 S.C.) William had a brother named Tillmond D. born Jan 30, 184? per the family bible. The Pope Co. Historical Society refers to Timman Younger as one of William and Martha's sons. Perhaps there was a misspelling. The family bible does not have clear recordings of William & Martha's children as it does of James and Margaret. Ancestry.com will not take my access code today thus I haven't been able to view the 1900 census report. I look forward to seeing the report. Let me know if this relates to what you were looking for and thank you for the Tillmond question. Carolyne E. This is just a hunch, but may solve the reason "someone" began putting the Logan on th Joshua Younger (1752-1833). His grandson, son of his son Garrett Younger, was named Joshua L. Younger. He was in the Civil War and appears on the 1860 census in the very place Joshua dies in 1833, Flinn, Lawrence, Indiana. Coincidences? I would say so and some poor soul probably got these two mixed up, what do you think? ...then I found this... "FIRST CENSUS" OF KENTUCKY 1790 [p.1] HISTORY OF THE FIRST UNITED STATES CENSUS OF KENTUCKY [p.5] Kentucky Counties in 1790 page 104 Younger, Joshua Lincoln 6/1/1790 Comments? Ok don't get all excited.... this IS as was printed, but looking into the AIS further the LINCOLN was the COUNTY! Now perhaps we can see how these things get started! IF I had not looked further we may have been looking for Joshua Lincoln Younger!!! Linda in KC
I believe you will find that Tillman Thomas David Younger was the son of W. M. Younger (name unknown) and Martha, as noted in the 1900 census: 1900 AR Pope County, Lee Township, 6 Jun, Ed 177, Sheet 4, page 107. We have not found the parents of W. M. Younger as yet. The T. J. Younger you mentioned was of Missouri and Oklahoma, married Emma C. Barmour of Ohio and had children, Charles A. 1874 and Jesse 1872, both in St. Clair County, MO. Tillman died Apr 1973 in Yell AR as per Social Security. Attached find a copy of the 1900 census report. Linda in KCMO
Wilma N- Well, that was really dumb on my part. Of course Nancy's children are with their father in the 1880 census and he has a new wife. There would be no reason that our Nancy would be living with Ellen Younger and not have her children with her, even if she and Nathan divorced. Do you have any idea what Nancy this might be? By the way the 1850 clearly states Nancey Younger was age 13, yes that was the spelling, but nothing different than what was posted by me. I have it if you want a copy. Back to the drawing board---again! Oh while on this family group, did Nancy have a brother Porter Younger b 1833? Another one of those names thrown my way. I have looked at the 1880 AR. census Water Creek, Marion Co., AR. 158-158 Estis, Nancy 48 F w IL SC TN William 17 son AR SC TN Younger, Ellen 76 w NC NC NC Thomas & Ellen's daughter Nancy was born in Hopkins Co., KY. abt 1837. In this census, Alexander and Lucinda are in house 157-157. I assume this would be next door. C. Bowles JYG wrote: > Wilma N- > > Well, that was really dumb on my part. Here is the reply I received from Carolyne Bowles (wife of Ralph). She does the researching, I had her listed under "Ralph" by mistake. I would tend to agree that the Nancy Estes in 1880 would not be Nancy Younger Woodworth -- since her children were with Nathan in 1870 and 1880. But, unless we can find a death record or cemetery record -- guess we won't know for sure. Wilma ----- Original Message ----- From: Ralph Bowles To: Wilma Norton Sent: Saturday, August 11, 2001 12:30 PM Subject: Re: Nancy (Younger) Woodworth Dear Wilma, How very nice to hear from you. I have been away from family research most of this year as other priorities have required my time. I am now trying to get back to this very interesting (sometimes) obsession. I can understand the question per Nancy Younger's time of death as I have questioned that myself. I believe her to be the Nancy Younger who married Nathan Woodworth and is in the 1860 AR. census with his family. I have always assumed she died prior to the 1870 census because she is not in that census with Nathan though her children are and it appears he has a new wife Mary. Some of Nancy's children are still with Nathan and Mary in 1880. Because the children are with Nathan, I assumed Nancy had died. However, in the 1880 census, Ellen Younger is in the census with a Nancy Estes age 48, having one wonder if Nancy might have still been alive. Following ages in prior census, I believe she should have been 43 not 48. Rechecking the original census might find that 8 was really a 3. One of many interesting mysteries. The Younger Message Board with Rootsweb sounds very interesting. Carolyne Wilma Norton wrote: Hi Carolyne, The death date for Nancy, above, has come into question. No, Virgie Mae was the oldest daughter of Martha Alice Younger and Elmer Turney. What you have came from the Marion County History published a few years ago and they made the error. I was very upset when the book came out because I had turned in the information. Went back and checked my carbon copy of what I had sent. It was their error which I knew had to be as soon as I saw it (not that I am always right, but I am very careful and I knew I had turned it in as it should be). Another proof that you can't always rely on a lot of information you find in data other people have put together. I almost swore off sending in anything to history books compilers. Thanks Nancy, I have done some research in NC, but will dig a little deeper. I did a little more work on this Woodworth line last night - have moved some of the children, found Mary's first marriage, and based on that, have made some assumptions. Still needs a lot of documentation, which I haven't found yet, but will send it and maybe if anyone else is working on this line can fill in some blanks or provide documentation. Descendants of Nathan Woodworth Generation No. 1 1. Nathan1 Woodworth (RoswellA) was born 1824 in Genessee City, New York (Source: (1) 1860 Richland Twp. Searcy Co. AR, age 36, fmr 300/100 NY., (2) 1870 AR, Searcy Co., Bearcreek Twp., Page 2 Dwelling 9, Age 47, NY., (3) 1880 Sylamore Twp. Stone Co. AR, Nathan Woodworth, 57 NY VT VT farmer., (4) 1900 Lee Twp. Pope Co. AR, N. F. Woodworth, Jul 1822, 78 wd. 25y NY VT VT farmer.), and died Aft. 1900 in Pope County, Arkansas (Source: Ralph Bowles via email..). He married (1) Precilla (Source: Leslie Hopkins.) Abt. 1848. She was born Abt. 1831 in Hopkins County, Kentucky (Source: (1) Leslie Hopkins., (2) Ralph Bowles via email..), and died Bef. 1860 in Arkansas (Source: Ralph Bowles via email..). He married (2) Nancy Younger Abt. 1853 in Searcy County, Arkansas (Source: Ralph Bowles via email..), daughter of Thomas Younger and Ellen London. She was born Abt. 1837 in Hopkins County, Kentucky (Source: (1) 1850 Giles Co. TN Dist #14, Pg 345 Oct 5, 1850., Nancey, 13 KY., (2) 1860 Richland Twp. Searcy Co. AR, Nancy Woodworth, 23 KY.), and died Abt. 1864 in Arkansas. He married (3) Mary A. Aft. 1865. She was born Abt. 1842 in Arkansas (Source: (1) 1870 AR, Searcy Co., Bearcreek Twp., Page 2 Dwelling 9, Mary A. Woodworth, 28, AR. There are two Roberts children in the Woodworth household, possibly her former name was Roberts.., (2) 1880 Sylamore Twp. Stone Co. AR, Mary Woodworth, wife 37 AR TN TN., (3) Not in 1900 census with Nathan..), and died Bef. 1900 in Pope County, Arkansas (Source: Not in 1900 census with Nathan..). Notes for Nathan Woodworth: Early in the Civil War, Nathan was charged as a traitor to the Confederate State of Arkansas, but was later cleared. His daughter, Martha, by his first marriage, wed William Younger who is the son of James Younger of Lawrence County, Tenn. in the 1850 & 1860 census. This James Younger may be the son of our 1791 Thomas Younger. (Srs. William O. Younger - from Mable Motes research). Ralph Bowles (rcbowles@earthlink.net) emailed me his research on Nathan. He has found him as follows: 1850 Union Twp. Conway Co. AR pg. 267, Dwelling 566. Nathan 27, Precilla 19, George 2, Martha 1/3. 1860 Richland Twp. Searcy Co. AR pg. 57, Dwelling 334. Nathan 36, Nancy 23, George 11, Martha 10, Flora 6, Sylva 3. 1870 Bear Creek Twp. Searcy Co. AR pg. 2, Dwelling 9. Nathan 47, Mary A. 28, Sylva 15, Harry T. 8, John F 6, Thelbert 3, Rosaneot 2, George Roberts 9, John T. 4. 1880 Sylamore Twp. Stone Co. AR pg. 181, Dwelling 193. Nathan 57, Mary A. 39, John F. 15, Thelbert 13, Rosaneot 12, Nathaniel 7, John Roberts 14, Sarah Vest 34. 1900 Lee Twp. Pope Co. AR pg. 111A, Dwelling 128. Nathan 78, Frank A. 17. My 1860 census information is the same as above. My 1870 census is a transcription by Margie Garr. It lists the family: Nathan 47, Mary A. 28, Siglo (f) 15, Hareis T. 8, John F. 6, Tolbert 3, Rosaneot 2, James W. Roberts 8, John I Roberts 4. I believe these last two are children from Mary A.'s first marriage. I found James Winfrey Roberts 19, in the 1880 Bear Creek, Searcy, AR census as a boarder in the home of James Hamilton. Hi all - I know we're all here to figure our Youngers out, but if anyone has or can direct me to the ancestors of some spouses, I would be most grateful. Amanda Ruddell(Ruddle) -m 1874- Wilson "Wit" Younger Rebecca Crews -m 1836- Armistead Younger Priscilla (Parcilla) Jones -m 1822- William Younger Mary Watkins -m <1780- William Younger Mary Northern -m- Thomas Younger I would be ecstatic if there is any documentation out there, but an "educated guess" is a good place to start. I'm gonna go crazy if I don't focus on something other that the Youngers for a while.
