Judging from entries from "The Bristol Registers of Servants sent to Foreign Plantations 1654-86" by Peter Wilson Coldham, the "Batchelor of Bristol" was clearly picking up passengers from Bristol, England in the 1670's. The voyage from Bristol, England to St. Mary's, Maryland would have taken the ship around the south of Ireland, passing the ports at Dublin, Wexford, Waterford and Cork, all and any of which would be natural emigration ports, especially for Catholics, who would wish to go to Maryland, rather than Virginia, which was chiefly Church of England.

    3. -HISTORY OF HICKORY, POLK, CEDAR, DADE AND BARTON COUNTIES, MISSOURI, 1889. Goodspeed Publishing Co., Pgs. 791, 792. Charles S. Younger, blacksmith, and proprietor of a general repair shop in Stockton, Mo., was born in Williamson County, Tenn., in 1837, and is a son of Thomas and Sarah (Church) Younger, who were born in North Carolina in 1798 and 1813, respectively. They were taken to Tennessee by their parents when young, and were married in Williamson County. In October 1853 they removed to Missouri and located near Stockton, where they became the owners of a tract of land, on which they died in 1878, and 1873, respectively. Mr. Younger's brothers, Samuel and James, were soldiers in the War of 1812, and were at the battle of New Orleans under Jackson. Samuel died of disease, and James died in Cedar County. This branch of the Younger family was first represented in the United States by two brothers, who came from Scotland, and settled in Virginia and North Carolina, Thomas Younger, the grandfather of our subject, being a descendant of the North Carolina pioneer. Polly Nauls was the grandmother's maiden name. Sarah (Church) Younger was a daughter of Thomas and Eliza (Culbertson) Church, and became the mother of thirteen children, nine of whom are living: Elizabeth, wife of William Pankey; William T., Henry N., James M., Margaret, wife of Jordan Pankey; Charles S., Robert A.; Martha, wife of John A. Haynes; and Onie E., wife of Sylvester Terrill. Charles S. Younger has resided on farms in Cedar County since sixteen years of age, making his home with his parents until twenty-two years of age, and since fifteen years old has also worked at the blacksmith's trade. In 1862 he enlisted in the Enrolled Militia, Company A, and in 1864 joined Mitchell's regiment. In 1865 he and G. R. Corbin erected a blacksmith shop in Stockton, and remained associated in business for twenty-one years, or until 1887, when they dissolved partnership, since which time Mr. Younger has been in business by himself, being the oldest blacksmith in Stockton. Previous to the war he was a Whig, and cast his first presidential vote for Bell and Everett, but after the war became a Democrat, and is now a Prohibitionist. He has filled the chairs in the Blue Lodge and Chapter of the Masonic order. August 12, 1869, he wedded Miss Amanda J. Montgomery, a daughter of William and Elizabeth (Mitchell) Montgomery, who were born in Sevier County and Roane County, Tenn., in 1811 and 1812, and died in Cedar and Greene Counties, Mo., in 1886 and 1888, respectively. Mr. Younger has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, since he was twenty-four years of age, and his wife since ten or twelve years of age.

    3. I believe it was Wilma N., who was discussing with me last night, things we overlook in our own files. Earlier today I believe I posted the following: SOURCE: Halifax County, Virginia Marriage Index. [Boyd-Younger] General Index to Marriages, Halifax Co. VA, 28 May 1792, Betsy Younger to Aaron Boyd, dau Wm. Younger who consents. Surety: David Brandon. Book 1, pg. 26. This is regarding the marriage of Elizabeth "Betsy" Younger, dau of William and Patience Younger, to Aaron Boyd. From the following 1850 census, I had her age as being born abt 1761. Ok, we all know about census reports, but this is the only indication of her birth that I had had thus far. Now, why am I writing all of this again? If she were indeed born in 1761, when she married in 1792, she would have been 31 years old, and surely NOT in need of her father's permission to marry. Although not impossible, but unlikely, she would have had her last child when she was 54 years old. I am now wondering if this was the daughter of William and Patience, or another William Younger?? 1. I am going to look again at the census and see if it is age 89. *Did this and it is 89-BUT the family is that of son Joel and wife Peninah, Elizabeth is merely listed as head of household. 2. Continuing to look for William Youngers. 3. Who is Wm Younger in the 1810 census Essex Co, Va? These 2 in question were dead. 4. Wm Younger who marries Patience , names a daughter Leah in his Will, thus the 7 whites would now include Leah, making 7 persons. Linda in KC

    3. Brownie - Please forgive me if I'm just now understanding this, or if I have finally lost my marbles all together. Is there a possibility (stronger than slight) that William Younger who married Mary Watkins was NOT the son of Thomas Younger son of Alexander of Scotland? If there is, than I agree, it does deserve a good deal of attention. We could all be looking in the wrong place for our roots. I know more than a couple people in my family won't like it one bit if it's discovered that we aren't descended from Alexander, but I don't care. I'd rather be right than Scottish (not that being a Scot isn't REALLY cool). Let me know how I can help and count me in. 2. Wilma C. Hillman
    3. Stephen, I'm pretty much in your corner. I do not have a question in my mind that the William who married Mary Watkins is the son of Thomas. There is so much documentation in the settling of the two estates (William and Williamson) that it is proved over and over again. The William who married Patience is just plain "hanging out there" by himself because we haven't figured it out yet. But there are two Williams! and they don't both belong to Thomas. I just wasted a lot of precious time with my flight of fancy or I would start typing court records. S. 3. I am going to take you on a flight of fancy. Imagine - me- who proclaims loudly for documentation, documentation, documentation. Just bear with me and go along on this flight of fancy. There will be nothing gained and nothing lost. Consider: Virginia Historical magazine Donald Robertson's School Donald Robertson was master of a then famous school in King and Queen County, VA from about 1758-1769. The school was in Drysdale Parish on the eastern branch of the Mattapony about four miles above Dunkirk. Robertson's account book has been donated to the Virginia Historical Society: Account of scholars for 1767 Alex. Younger to English paid 1.0.0 Who was this Alexander? We know who he is not. He was not the scandalous Alexander who immigrated some time in the 1660s (estimated because I did not look it up and spoke from memory). He would have been dead since the time span we are considering is about one hundred years. It is also not the Alexander Younger who married Rebecca Mills because we know he died in 1727 and the tuition was paid forty years later. Woe is me! We have an Alexander Younger living in King and Queen County we knew nothing about. An Alexander Younger was living in King and Queen County in 1716. Could it have been Rebecca's husband? or not? King and Queen County, VA Deed 1716 Casper Colton to Robert Farish, land in King and Queen County adjoining Alexander Younger's house. What else do we know about King and Queen County? It immediately adjoins Essex County and was created from New Kent in 1691. The will of Rebecca's husband, Alexander was probated 18 Jul. 1727. He had three sons; Thomas, apparently the oldest, John and James . It isn't clear whether or not Thomas was of legal age. In the will Alexander provides that his sons "be on their own" at age seventeen. He also makes it clear that none of them had, at present, any issue. John died between the writing of the will and the probate date. Subsequently Thomas is made guardian of the remaining brother and Jannett, Susan, Mary and Ann. He is their guardian in 1732. Only Elizabeth appears not to have a guardian. Perhaps it is because she married John Dillard at a very early age. It is probably well here to mention that there are no firm documented dates for the marriage and births of the mother or children. The birth of Thomas has been estimated at ca 1720. If that were true, he would have been only seven years old when his father died. Not likely. If I were guessing, I would guess he might have been between seventeen and twenty one at his father's death. That would make it 1710-1714. This has no more validity than the 1720 guess. It is based on pure conjecture. I want to make that clear. So with this tremendous responsibility for such a young man, what did he do. His father had bequeathed to him "that piece of land that I bought of Mr. Hill and Richard Jones". Where was that land? See below: Essex County, VA Deeds and Wills, 1714-1717, p 359 Leonard Hill, gent of Southfarnum Parish in the county of Essex Va, Attorney General for George Cappell, merchant in the City of London and Richard Jones, planter of the same sell Alexander Younger, planter of the same parish, for 3,250 pounds of tobacco, 100 acres of land adjoining that of Francis Browne, Sr, the land of Thomas Wood, the land of Maj. Aylett, land formerly belonging to George Kephill, land of Nicholas Newton. Signed Richard Jones Leo Hill Witnesses: James Boughan, Henry (X) Browne So what did Thomas do? Move onto his 100 acres in Southfarnum Parish? By 1733 his brother John is dead and his mother has remarried to Timothy Driscoll At some unknown point before before Dec 1740 Thomas has moved to St. Stephen's Parish in King and Queen County abandoning his legacy. Why? What was the attraction? Family? Essex County Deed Book 22 , 1738-1742, p. 215 3 Dec 1740 Thomas Younger of St. Stephen's Parish, King and Queen County, VA to Timothy Driscoll of Southfarnum Parish, Essex County for 5,000 pounds of tobacco and cash, all interest now or hereafter in 100 acres in Essex adjoining John Farish, Capt. William Aylett and John Croxton it being all that tract purchased by his father, Alexander Younger, dec'd of Richard Jones and Leonard Hill. Witnesses: Thomas Backer, John Croxton, Henry Brown He was still living in King and Queen County as late as 1751/52 Queen Merchants Ledger 1751-1752. Accession # 25110, Virginia State Library, p 49 Thomas Younger March 1751 Thomas Younger July 1752 Thomas had a daughter Mary Fretwell, who is named in his documents. A relative of her husband bought back the land which had been sold to Rebecca and Timothy Driscoll. Essex County VA Deed Book 24, p 354 and Virginia Colonial Abstracts, p 353 10 Aug. 1749 William Fretwell of Southfarnum Parish, Essex County VA to Thomas Younger of Drisdale Parish in County of King and Queen County for 30 pounds, all interest now or hereafter in 100 acres in Essex, purchased of Thomas Younger by Timothy Driscoll and by him conveyed to William Fretwell Witnesses: Thomas Backer, Richard Hodges What was the attraction in King and Queen County? Marcus Younger and Thomas Younger appeared to have a reasonably close relationship though we do not know what that relationship is. We know they were not brothers. Were they cousins? If so, who was the uncle? The will of Thomas Younger was witnessed by Marcus Younger and his son John Younger Marcus and William Younger, son of Thomas, both bought land from Meador Anderson. The point of this entire adventure has been to demonstrate that we do not have all of the pieces and King and Queen County (or New Kent) may hold the key. There were two separate and distinct William Youngers; one the son of Thomas and the William who stands quite alone. What was the relationship of Thomas and Marcus? Was William (of Patience) related at a different level. The deaths of the three men (William, Thomas and Marcus) seem to indicate they are contemporary to each other. I think we will have to do a lot more research before we can solve the puzzle of William (of Patience). As for William, the son of Thomas, I think the picture is quite clear and documented. Now that I have finished this I'm not sure it was worth the effort. We come away with the same problem we started with? Thanks for taking this adventure with me.

    3. Brownie- After I wrote this I found something interesting: 1820 YOUNGER PATIENCE Halifax County VA 065 Maresville Federal Population Schedule VA 1820 Federal Census Index VAS2a1414600 I have had these two Williams on my *to find* list also. When you look at them it almost seems that Thomas did indeed name two sons William. But, unless one preceeded him in death, would he not have named both in his Will? If he had two Williams, then in his Will he would have stipulated "which" William he was referring to. However, one died in 1803 and the other in 1805. I have the following on the William who married Patience. Please advise if any errors here. Thanks: -1785 VA Heads of families William Younger 7 white souls, 1 dwelling, 5 buildings (1) William; (2) Patience; (3) Elizabeth (4) Sarah (5) Rachel (6) Keziah (7) possible a mo-in-law etc. His daughters were born and married in Halifax county. Elizabeth was 89 years (b 1761) old in the 1850 census, a widow. When she married her father William gave consent (1792) to marry Aaron Boyd. His dau Sarah marries a John Thomas. This may be irrevelant, but last night I came across a Younger Thomas, who might be a descendant. But I never gave it a thought until just now. This couple dies in Iredell, Nc. Rachel, I believe was unmarried. Keziah marries John Ellis Bentley 1793 Halifax, Va [VA Marriage Index]. They reside and die in Henderson Ky. [1810-1820-1830 censuses] -Signed Will: 27Dec1783, Halifax, Va, Usa; Probate: 15 Jul 1803, Halifax, Va, Usa. Will of William Younger, wife Patience, whole estate during her widowhood. At her death estate to be divided equally to his children: Rachel, Leah, Keziah, Betty, Sally. If any of them married, his widow could give them anything she liked. If she married, two thirds of the estate was to be taken from her and divided among the daughters named. Executors: Patience Younger and James Blackwell - granted probate in due form. Securities and bondsmen: Philemon Carlton and John Younger. Blackwell refused to serve. Philmon Carlton and John Younger appointed. [Halifax Co. WB 6, Pg.258.] Big clue here: John Younger was named. Who was he? Thomas the "joiner" had no sons John and William did not have a son John. Who were Blackwell and Carlton? Now I have a question. A while back, when I started on this Va bunch of Youngers I was sent info that Thomas "the joiner" m1 abt 1730 Mary Northern and had William (who m Molly Watkins) b 1746; and Manny, both b Halifax. Thomas then m2 1750 Sarah Ferguson. Any ideas where these names came from? If Thomas only married once he waited until he was almost 50 to do so, unless I have his birth date incorrect. But Alexander does name Thomas as first mentioned son, which "usually" but not always, named them in birth order.
