My W. A. Younger and Elizabeth moved to Tennessee between 1846 and 1848 when their daughter was born in Tennessee. This family stayed in Carroll County until after 1900 when some of them moved to Memphis. Maybe they followed Armistead. I just haven't found what the relationship would be. Seems we're talking about the same William Alexander Younger. I hadn't traced them beyond 1880, so was not aware of the move to Memphis. Now that I know how to get on this site, I will answer Judy's question here. Judy wondered if I knew why Joshua and his wife, Catherine Yoter Younger moved from Kentucky to Indiana. This is what I have: From his Revolutionary War file dated July 20, 1818, Judge John Trimble of Nicholas County, Kentucky, writes that Joshua Younger "is in indigent circumstances and stands in need of the provisions made by law for Continental soldiers, he is poor, old, and has been disabled." He was unable to work and in further court papers on March 31, 1829 in Carlisle, Nicholas Co., KY, Joshua states his occupation is a farmer but that he is "unable to follow it." States he and his wife had their son Garrett, 22 years old, and Garrett's wife, 20 years old, living with them. "Neither myself nor wife has been able to support ourselves by our labour for many years past, and I am much indebted for necessaries to support on. And what little property I now have will be sacrificed to pay my debts and will not pay one half of it." Goes on to list what property he has in his possession at that time which totaled to $119 in his estimation. In 1819, Joshua and Catherine's son, Stever Younger, left Kentucky for Indiana and settled first near Fayetteville and then to Bedford, Lawrence Co. area. In the 1830 census of Nicholas Co., KY Joshua Younger is listed as head of household and it appears as Garrett and his wife and 2 children are living with them. Next on the census list is Joshua and Catherine's son, Lewis Younger. (My direct line) In 1833 Joshua made request to have his pension transferred to Lawrence Co., Indiana. "At his advanced age, he felt the need to abandon independent living and take up residence with one of his sons." Joshua died in Lawrence Co. on Aug. 2,1834 and is buried in Leatherwood Cemetary in Bedford, Indiana. He probably left Kentucky with his son Garrett as this is who we find Catherine living with in 1840. The 1840 census of Lawrence Co., Ind. shows that Joshua's widow Catherine is living with her son Garrett and his family. Also in the area were his sons Lewis and Stever. His daughter, Elizabeth Lee, from his first marriage to Elizabeth Lee, was married to John Mack Lewis and living in Orleans, Orange Co., Indiana. In the 1850 Shawswick, Lawrence Co., Ind. census, Catherine is living with her son Lewis who is widowed with 9 children living with him. She may have moved in there to help with his kids as his wife, Nancy Crose Younger, died in 1848. I do not have much information on Catherine. I have seen her last named spelled in several ways, Yoter and Yeater. There first appeared in Hampshire Co., VA in 1786 a Peter, 1788 a Joseph, and in 1790 a Conrad Yeater. I have done really no research on this side yet. Guess I should start!

I had assumed this was William Alexander Younger and wife, Elizabeth Martin. Have not been able to attach him to a parent. They married in 1838 (found in the FOTY book) and evidently stayed in Carroll County until his death. I last found both of them in the 1880 census of Carroll County. The dwelling number was 1099 and family number 1099, found on page 83B and 84A - images number 163 and 164 on ancestry.com. It's possible William A. and Armistead were brothers, I guess -- they were both born in Virginia (although I don't believe anyone has proven Halifax for William Alexander), but William A. moved to Carroll Co. TN and stayed there while Armistead moved to Stone Co. Ark. I found an Armistead in 1840 Halifax VA, age 50-60 -- too old to be the one who went to Ark. unless the father was Armistead too. There was another male that could be this Armistead, but how do you find that out. I didn't find Armistead until the 1880 census and by then he was in Ark. Looking at the information I have (from a book Stone Co. Genealogical Society did on Armistead) he evidently was in Tenn. and possibly Carroll Co. by 1842 when his son John Bomar was born. And they list Carroll Co. for the birthplace of his daughter Catherine. The next child, Robert Albert was born in Arkansas in 1853 - so he came to Ark. early on and stayed there. Going back to the 1840 Halifax census -- did they enumerate the household under the oldest male, or would it have been the farm owner? If the later, then that would be right for Armistead and he must have had his father living with him. Or it could have been his wife's father. 1840 Halifax Co.
