Besides Rotterdam, Scottish Churches existed in many other places as well, such as London, and Leydon. The home page of the Church in Rotterdam described its congregation as having been formed from Scottish merchants, seamen and soldiers living in Rotterdam. In text from a book below suggests there were Scots living in Rotterdam before 1640. There exists a book entitled The history of the Scottish Church, Rotterdam (1832) It can be read in whole online at http://www.archive.org/details/historyofscottis00stevuoft The book describes Rotterdam as a place of commerce, frequented by both British and Scots many years prior to 1640. The Scottish Presbyterians had no clergyman but prior to 1640 enjoyed occasional ministrations of different chaplains. On July 19, 1642 is was proposed by the Lords of Rotterdam that a place of worship for the Scottish Nation be erected and ministers salary paid from city funds. Letters were sent to the Presbytery of Edinburgh asking assistance in procuring a pastor and was eagerly granted. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Francis Younger" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, January 02, 2007 2:50 AM Subject: Re: [YOUNGER] bit of informational trivia > You know it could be the other way around. You know it could be the other way around. Perhaps some Rotterdam folks went to Scotland. It's a chicken and egg problem. Which came first. Let me first of all say that all of this info. is on the U.S. Genweb for St. Mary's County, MD under Migration from Maryland 1780-1820 and under wills for the following people. Robert Thompson(father of Elizabeth Thompson m. John Lee, Phillip Greenwell(ancestor of Phillip Greenwell m. Lucinthia Younger, John Lee m. Mary Goodrum and Sam Lee. Will of Phillip Greenwell-SMC(not sure what that stands for)9/4/1774-11/1/1774. Stock, tobacco and all of the tract where I now live except the pt. bought of Phillip Medley at the head of Medleys Branch, etc.. gives to children Mary and Joseph Greenwell( Mary Thompson Greenwell, daughter of Robert Thompson, his parents being George Thompson and Rebecca Medley.) Daughter Susanna Thompson m. Philmonia Lee moved to KY. The will of Robert Thompson, gives to sons Ignatius, Charles, and to my son Bennett all the tract of land where I now live conveyed to me by George Thompson(his father) and William Thompson. Gives to his daughters, Susanna Lee, Elizabeth Lee and Mary Greenwell, Eleanor Halls, etc... Will of John Lee m. Mary Goodrum. SMC-1/17/1757-6/9/1757. gives to sons Thomas and John Lee as does Mary Goodrum Lees will. Will of Sam Lee 10/1/ 1780-2/17/1783. mentions daughter Mary Goodrum, Elizabeth Thompson(leaves her a slave) and mentions Phillip Lee. Now I don't know who Rebecca Medleys father was but in the will of George Medley he mentions several brothers including Joseph Hardin. Also William Medley, and George Thompson. On the Migrations from Maryland list, you will notice that the Medleys lived on Hardins Creek in KY. And notice that Thomas Greenwell m. Mary Medley(Phillip Greenwell m. Lucintha's gr. grandparents and Anastasia Greenwell m. Joseph Medley. Needless to say these families married back and forth into each other. Issac Hardin m. Amelia Younger, probable sister of Capt. John W. Younger. Elizabeth Thompson Lee Ice was also somehow connected to the Greenwell children. Seems like Wilma Hillman sent me something that she was their like godparent or something similiar. (I'll have to find that).I just thought finding this family connection was interesting.
Younger family members, If you have been waiting to order a DNA test, Family Tree DNA is offering gift certificates for various kinds of tests. This would be a good time to order the test, or maybe a gift for someone whose DNA would benefit your genealogy research. The details follow. If I can be of help, please let me know. Bobbi Estes To Younger group manager, As we enter the 2006 Holiday Season, Family Tree DNA would like to thank all our Group Administrators for their support during this and past years.
