The following web site has a searchable database to look-up soldiers and sailors that served in the Civil War. Since it gives the unit's name, it is fairly easy to request a pension file from the National Archives. The web site is run by the National Park Service. My search on the surname Young showed over 10,000 who served. This includes Union and Confederate. I sent for my relative's file and received over 100 pages of original documents detailing his life, service, and widow's life. It was well worth it. http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm
