William Young, was born December 26, 1815, supposedly in North Carolina, or now currently South Carolina, deceased December 2, 1854, buried "Jackson's Crossing" now known as or near the town of Anniston, Alabama, which town is now the County Seat of Calhoun County, Alabama, situated in the northeast section of Alabama, directly east of Birmingham. Brother to: Robert M. Young, born in Greenville District, South Carolina, on October 7, 1826, deceased on December 11, 1898, buried in the Wynn Cemetery at Center Point, Howard County, Arkansas. _______________________________________________ I have tried to organize information and research on two brothers, William and Robert M. Young. Robert M. Young is my gggrandfather. I am trying to find a direct link to their father which most likely lived somewhere in South Carolina, near Greenville District, in 1820 to 1830, or longer, assuming that William was born in 1815 (location unknown), and Robert M. was born in 1826 in Greenville District, S.C. William Young who was married to the of Nancy Young (described below in excerpt). Research of census records on Robert M. Young and other Young's living in the same areas at the same time are as follows. 1850 Census - Calhoun County Alabama. The census lists that Robert M. Young was a farmer and that he owned some acres of farm land in 1850. They were living in the area of Jackson's Crossing now known as, or near the town of Anniston, Alabama, which is now the County Seat of Calhoun County, Alabama. He and his wife Hanna are listed with two children (ages 3 and 6 months). Robert M. Young was listed as being 22. The census lists that William Young also lived in the same county of Alabama and farmed 600 acres of land. According to the excerpt above, these Young's moved from Alabama in 1859 to head west to new lands opened up and available to settled. 1860 Census - Sevier County Arkansas. The census lists that Robert M. Young was a farmer. No real estate or personal value is listed. It appears that at this time he had no assets. His age is listed at 32. He and his wife, Hanna, have 3 girls ages 12, 10, and 9, and one son age 6. They are included on the Saline Township of Sevier County. Nancy Ford Young, the widow of his brother, William Young, is also listed as living in the Saline Township of Sevier County with her family. Her oldest child, Adolphus, is age 19 and living in the same household with five other brothers and sisters. The census film was poor, but it appears that she owned real estate valued at $3,500 and had personal assets of $550. James Turquette and wife, Natalia Ann Young Turquette (William and Nancy's daughter), are listed next on the same census sheet as also living in Saline Township. They have one child age 8 months listed as Malisse. Their personal estate is valued at $50. 1870 Census - Sevier County Arkansas. Robert M. Young is listed at age 40 with a wife and two daughters ages 18 & 16, and one son age 13. No value has been listed for real estate and a $500 value has been listed on his personal estate. He is listed as a farmer. The location is now listed as Blue Bayou Township. 1880 Census - Howard County Arkansas. Robert M. Young is listed as age 53 with wife, Hanna, listed as 49. Their daughter Jane C. Young is still living with them. Their Son Robert Francis Young, age 25, and wife Sallie K age 22, are listed as living in the same household. Both of the men are listed as farm laborers. 1900 Census - Howard County Arkansas The census records indicate that Robert Francis Young (son of Robert M. Young) family had a boarder living with them. His name was Edgar B. Allen, white male, born August 1882, age 17, single, born in Arkansas, father from "unknown", mother from "Illinois". He is listed as a farm laborer. [I assume he was a farm laborer working for Robert Francis Young now shown as owning his farm land free and clear of mortgage.] ___________________________________________________ Cemetery Robert M. Young and his wife Hanna Young, are buried in the same cemetery with their son Robert Francis Young, in the Wynn Cemetery, Center Point, Howard County, Arkansas. This cemetery is located at the end of an unpaved country road. The cemetery is secluded in a wooded area, as if it were privately owned. I have photos of the headstones for these each of these individuals. Robert Francis Young's wife, Sally Katherine "Kate" Young, is buried in a different cemetery. I also have pictures and information on this cemetery and headstone. __________________________________________________ Howard County Arkansas History Book. I have purchased the Howard County Arkansas County history "Heritage" book printed in 1988. The index lists two full columns of names for Young's. There are many family stories listed. I have been unable to sort out which if any of these families are relatives. However, there is one YOUNG family of note that has to tie in somewhere. Emmett Puttman Young born in South Carolina, youngest of 8, came to Arkansas from Alabama before the Civil War. His children's names are John Pierce, Amsier "Bud", Mary (called Molly), Jenny (her children's names Pearl, Peirce, and Linnie), Sarah Melissa (her children's name John Harris, James Porter, William McGee, Melinda Elizabeth, Herbert Jackson, and Annie Lee), Mossy, William G. (children's names Fannie, William, Rosa, Arch, Dave, Harrison, Danny, and Sarah Corneille called DeeDee). There is a listing of which I have reproduced below: "The Old Log House, William and Nancy Ford Young. Nancy Ford Young built the old log house located between Nashville and the Country Club. It is a historical landmark, barely visible on the left side of the Country Club Road and a little beyond the Temperanceville Creek Bridge. Nancy Ford Young was born in 1815 in South Carolina. William Young was born in 1815 in North Carolina. They were married in South Carolina in 1838. They moved from South Carolina to Jackson's Crossing near Anniston, Alabama, in 1844, where William was listed in the census as a farmer. He died in 1854, and in 1859 Nancy came to Arkansas by ox cart with her children. She died in 1881. Children of William and Nancy Ford Young: 1. Adolphus Pearson Marion LaFayette Young born 1840 in South Carolina, died in 1862. 2. Natalia Anastasia Octavia Gabriella (Ann) Young born 1842 in South Carolina, died in 1865. 3. Malisse Macrear Helen Decataleen (Polly) Young born 1844 in South Carolina, died in 1933. 4. Perry Calhoun Calvin Dekalb (Cal) Young born 1845 in Alabama, died in 1922. 5. Pierce Marion Butler Winfield Scott Young born 1847 in Alabama, died in ????. 6. Bowden Collier Sumter Moultrie Young born 1850 in Alabama, died in 1926. 7. Cornelia Berita Conela Armaminta (Sally) Young born 1852 in Alabama, died in 1908. Adolphus, the oldest child, was killed at the age of 21 in the Civil War in 1862 was buried at Pine Bluff. Ann married James Turquet (later Turquette). James was in the Civil War, 19th Regiment, Battle of Arkansas Post, where he was taken prisoner. James was taken by boat to St. Louis, Missouri, and on to Camp Douglas, near Chicago, Illinois. (Between 3,800 and 4,000 prisoners were taken from Arkansas Post engagement to Chicago.) Between January 27 and February 18, 1863, at Camp Douglas, 260 prisoners died of exposure to cold, malnutrition, or smallpox. James died February 15, 1863, at Camp Douglas. James's wife, Ann Young, died in 1865, leaving two small children, Cynthia and James. They were reared by their maternal grandmother, Nancy Ford Young. Cal Young fought in the Civil War at Vicksburg, Mississippi. He ate mule meat to keep from starving. After the war, he worked for the salt plant on the Saline River below Mineral Springs where he cut wood to use for boiling out salt. He earned two dollars a week. In politics he was an Independent and was defeated in "foul play." Cal was very religious and was a member of the Wakefield Methodist Church. Submitted be Zanza Isbell." ______________________________________________ Some excerpts from: Southwest Arkansas Regional Archives, Washington, AR, 71862 Prepared by E.E. Turquette, Dallas, Texas. "Natalia Ann Young, (the mother of James William LaFayette Turquette), was born September 27, 1842, in Calhoun County Alabama, the Daughter of William Young and Nancy Ford Young. Natalia Ann Young married James M.Turquette on January 13, 1859, in Alabama. She died on October 20, 1865, in Howard County, Arkansas, and was buried in Bluff Springs Cemetery, some six (6) miles west of Nashville, Arkansas, in Howard County, Arkansas. Natalia Ann Young Turquette's parents, William Young, (her father), was born December 26, 1815, supposedly in Alabama. He died December 2, 1854, in Alabama, and was buried in Birmingham, Alabama. Nancy Ford Young, (her mother), was born in 1815 (no month and day recorded, only the year 1815 inscribed on her tomb. She died in Howard County, Arkansas, on July 6, 1881, at the age of 66 years and was buried in the Bluff Springs Cemetery west of Nashville, Howard County, Arkansas. The following related data regarding the YOUNG family has been obtained from various sources and are considered as true and correct information: William Young and his wife Nancy Ford Young lived in Calhoun County, Alabama, where their eight (8) children were born to their union. Four (4) boys and four (4) daughters prior to the death of William Young on December 2, 1854. The first-born child, a daughter, was stillborn on November 14, 1839. After the death of William Young in 1854, his widow and the four (4) boys and the (3) daughters continued to live and reside in Calhoun County, Alabama, until about 1859. When the family left what is know as "Jackson's Crossing" now know as or near the town of Anniston, Alabama, which town is now the County Seat of Calhoun County. [Situated in the North East section of Alabama, directly east of Birmingham.] Their ultimate destination was to be Texas, but they stopped and settled near Mineral Springs, in Howard County, Arkansas, just prior to the War Between the States. Natalia Ann Young, the older daughter of the widowed Nancy Ford Young, was at that time of their leaving Jackson's Crossing about seventeen (17) years of age, and was in love with James M. Turquette and they were married in Alabama on January 13, 1859. So Natalia Ann and her husband, James M. Turquette, along with Nancy Ford Young and her children started for Texas in covered wagons. Due to the sparsely populated area in Howard County, Arkansas, where they lived with their grandmother Nancy Ford Young on a farm, there were no schools of any consequence for them to attend; therefore neither of them obtained very much education, and all they knew was to work about the farm at what was necessary to produce the necessities for their survival. Food, clothing, and the like made by their own hands. They knew very little, or anything, about their parents, only what was related to them while children, by their grandmother Young, and their two Aunts, and their Uncles Bowden Young and Cal Young." End of Excerpts Southwest Arkansas Regional Archives, Washington, AR, 71862 Prepared by E.E. Turquette, Dallas, Texas. _____________________________________________________________ Another Young was living in much of the same places with these at the same times. His name is Ezekiel Young. I believe him to somehow be related as a father, uncle, or brother to Robert M. Young and William Young. I have information that I believe places these families (Ezekiel, Robert M, and William) to be originated from or tied to the Captain William Young family out of Greenville, South Carolina. I have tried in vain to connect Robert M. Young, directly on my uplink to this or another Young family in North or South Carolina. I have a feeling that Robert M. Young's middle name will be "Marion" named after the revolutionary war hero or possibly Maxwell. Many family names match those in the family of Captain William Young, and I believe this family must have some connection. The Robert M. Young born to Captain William Young in 1798 would be the wrong date and generation. My gggrandfather Robert Young, per his headstone, was born on October 7, 1826, which would be near the date of the death of Captain William Young, December 7, 1826. However, I have suspicion that my Robert M. Young (and his brother William) are probably the sons of one of Captain William Young's sons, Ezekiel, William, Robert M, John, or Joseph. Captain Williams Young's other sons would be too young to be a father in 1826. I have a copied a page from a DAR book, Texas Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Roster, Revolutionary Ancestors, Volume IV, R-Z, page 2378, regarding Captain William Young. Captain William Young: "William Young, born in Loudoun County, Va. on July, 21, 1759; died in Greenville, S. C., on December 7, 1826. Married Mary Salmon in 1793. She was born 1775 and died August 3, 1847. Service: Joined army at age 16 and served to the end of the war. Wounded at the siege of Augusta. Rose to rank of Captain of Calvary after having served previously in the Infantry. Fought at King's Mountain, Cowpens, Augusta, Savannah, and in all engagements on both sides of the Savannah River. Greenville, South Carolina. Children of Captain William Young and Mary Salmon Young: 1. Ezekiel 2. William (M.D.), born 1796 3. Robert M. (M.D.), born 1798, Married Caroline Jones. 4. John, Born 1800 5. Juliette (Julia), born 1802, Married (1) Dr. Godbury, (2) _____ Caldwell 6. Hamilton, born 1805, married Penelope Mills 7. Joseph A., born 1808, married Augusta McGregor. 8. " End Of Text from DAR. __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ My Research of census records and other sources help me feel confident of my ancestors and links up / back to Robert M. Young: Robert M. Young, born in Greenville District, South Carolina, on October 7, 1826, deceased on December 11, 1898, buried in Center Point, Howard County Arkansas. I have made a trip to Center Point, Arkansas, and have a photo of this headstone. He is buried next to his son, Robert Francis Young, born 1-22-1855, Anniston, Calhoun County, Alabama, and deceased 9-12, 1929, buried Center Point, Howard County, Arkansas. He married Sallie Catherine "Katy" Alexander on December 30, 1879. I have a photocopy of this Marriage License from the Howard County archives. One of the witnesses that signed the marriage license is his father, signed as R. M. Young. The other witness that signed the marriage license is his brother-in-law, John L. Hill, married to his sister, Margaret Adelia E. Young. My grandfather, John Thomas Young (son of Robert Francis Young), was born in Dierks, Howard County, Arkansas, on 7-3-1883. He married my grandmother, Ida Frances Bedwell, on 9-19-1904, in Center Point, Howard County, Arkansas. I have information on this branch of family, from John Thomas Young, that were culled from records from local historical libraries, census records, county clerks' records from different counties, and photos of head stones from cemeteries which I have visited in my search for ancestors. I have written to all of the Young's, on the property tax rolls for Howard County, Arkansas (in 1988) which has led me to some information on different family members and branches. But my research has still been in vain to connect Robert M. Young, to a family in the Greenville, S.C. area (where he is reportedly born). Anyone that can help me tie my family line of Robert M. Young into any line in North or South Carolina would be greatly appreciated. I hope the research and information listed here will be of help or interest to some of you as well. Johnny W.
