I would enjoy hearing from the descendants of GARRETT & MARY BERRY YOUNG: GARRETT YOUNG, b.1811 in KY, d. 1865 in Titus County TX. Mary was b. January 9,1825 in Orange County Indiana, d. 7-15-1892.. Garrett & Mary are buried at Shiloh Cemetery in Titus County TX. I recently visited and have photos. They married in Benton, MO 1841. They are buried in the Shiloh Cemetery in Titus County. He was living in Titus County Texas during the years of 1847-1865, with his wife, MARYANN BERRY. Their children were: Benjamin, Alexander, Sarah, Amanda, Lewis, Celia, Elizabeth, Twins: Tabitha & Tilitha, and Mary. Child # 5, Lewis Young, was my grandfather. His first wife was "Sallie Wommack", married abt 1880, together in 1900 Wood County TX Census. I have no other information on her. I am interested in her information because she was a part of my grandfather's life for about 20 years, and he must have loved her. His second marriage to MARTHA (MATTIE) PORTER, abt 1902. I have a lot of information on their descendants, I descended through this marriage. Thank you for taking time to read and respond if you have any information, especially old photos, pre-1900. Evidently, from my email, there are several on this list that are very appreciative of the Freedman list. This strengthens the point I'm making. If people want the list for now or to retain "just in case", then they can request it. ----- Original Message ----- From: <User920035@aol.com> To: <YOUNG-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, August 30, 2002 9:48 AM Subject: [YOUNG] re:Freedmen listings to be posted > > From: jolenem@airmail.net > To: YOUNG-L@rootsweb.com > Sent from the Internet (Details) > I don't mean to be rude, but in my opinion this much data should be sent > only to those that are requesting it. I am new to the list. I'm searching for information on HENRY YOUNG. Any information will be appreciated. HENRY YOUNG married DEMPSEY GARRETT BUCKELEW 3-12-1806 in KY. I do not know the county or dob for either. Henry Young died 11-6-1844. I don't know what county, could have been Christian County, see next line. GARRETT YOUNG was their son. He was born 1-19-1811 in Christian County Kentucky and died 9-25-1865 in Titus County Texas. I have information on Garrett Young and his descendants. My search focus is on Henry Young and Dempsey Garrett Buckelew. Thank you for taking time to read this posting. Nancy Young Carter PO 162 Fruitvale, Texas 75127
There have been a series of problems over the summer but nothing special lately that I know about. There was a post yesterday afternoon (8/31 about 2 PM) and several on Friday (8/30). You might try the searchable archives for the list and search on Aug 2002. Hi everyone, I am seeking to establish the relationship between Benjamin YOUNG (b Allegany County, MD) and Jesse YOUNG (moved from Allegany to Harrison County, OH?). They are found living next to one another in the 1830 Census of Harrison County, OH. In the 1830 census, Benjamin lived with his wife and one daughter under 5. By 1840, Jesse Young's household is not shown, but the Benjamin Young household has picked up 1 female between the age of 70 & 80. This is the right age for Mrs. Jesse Young of the 1830 census. My theory is that Jesse Young is Benjmin's father, and that Jesse Young died between 1830 and 1840, and his widow moved in with her son's family. Does anyone have Jesse's date of death? Benjamin Young b. 18 March 1807, Allegany Co., MD, married 1st on 8 January 1829 in Harrison County OH, and died 12 August 1899 in Wapello County, IA. Jesse Young married Mary BRADY on 29 July 1805 in Allegany County, MD. (Thank you Allegany County USGENWEB and Carol Askey who sent lots of info. on Youngs before I was even able to have some hypothesis on Benjamin's family.) Jesse Young is listed as head of household as follows: 1810 Allegany Co. MD aged 26-44 (Has two males under 5 also) 1820 Harrison Co. OH aged 45 and up (has two males 10 and under 16) 1830 Harrison Co. OH aged 50 and under 60. (has 1 male 20 and under 30) If my math is right, and these are all the same Jesse, he was born between 1780 and 1784. Where was he born? I wrote to the Harrison County courthouse week's ago for Jesse's probate, but no reply so far. Is there a way to connect Jesse and Benjamin in Allegany County, MD? Is the Mary Brady above the daughter of Ben Brady? Thanks in advance for any help. Joe Wright, Chicago
Hello everyone, Back last week I posted the REED and YOUNG names to their surnames list, for the Freedmen Project. I noticed the neither one posted to there archives. I contacted both list admin to make them aware of the Rootsweb problem. Finally tonight I see the REED name is in the archive. But the YOUNG name still has not shown up yet. You's will just have to keep ckecking the YOUNG list archive, for the reports. I want to take this time to thank "all" of you for your comments and suggestions. As far as the Freedmen Project surname reports, well they will only be posted to the surname list owners list at Rootsweb in FREE genealogy.. You can find COMPLETE files of the FREEDMEN DAWES ROLL and OK CENSUS in any of your State Freedmen list, east of the Mississippi. With excption to those states above NY. I hopefully will be posting them this weekend and also the FOREMAN surname. Next month I will do all the states west of the Mississippi and four other territorys of America. Signing Off: Bright Star Freedmen Project

Hello List Admin and Members, I would just like to take the time to THANK all of you for your wonderful post. Wether good or bad, all of your opinions count to me. I have many list to still work on and I learn from what you all teach me. I am a geneologist with info that has not yet reached the web, and my intention was to get it to all of you in FREE GENEOLOGY. My intention was also to get it into the ROOTSWEB archives. Rootsweb has been a tool for geneologist , that allows us to share and have the means to connect our family's freely. I owe them alot. And I also owe every poster who has taken time to post. I want you all to know that I plan on answering each and every post that was sent to me, asking me questions and all of that sort of stuff. I exspecially want to thank all of you LIST ADMINISTRATORS who have allowed the info to reach the Rootsweb archives. It will be there for generations to come. There is so much more coming out of Washington DC about the FREEDMEN. It has been long overdue. I remember back before Ex President Clinton left office and he made the statement that the FREEDMEN RECORDS needed to be indexed and taken care of. Well as a young Freedmen researcher, I have had some of the best folks to work with from Washingtion . I have been told that there is much more to come, at a later date. Last but not least, my work on your list at this time is complete, so please if you have any questions, and cannot reach me on the list. please contact me at BrightStar9136@aol.com. I thank you all for your patience . Please visit the link below. Bright Star Freedmen Project Click here: Ancestry.com - Freedmen's Bureau Records Preservation Act Signed into Law On Monday, November 6, President Clinton signed into law the Freedmen's Bureau Records Preservation Act of 2000 (H.R. 5157, now Public Law No: 106-444). This law ensures preservation of the records of the Freedmen's Bureau. http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/news/art
Hi Everyone, Anyone who would like to have there FREEDMEN family member honered, please fill out the following form, and it will be submitted to those working on the project. You will have to fill in as many answers as possible, as it will affect the report we send back to you. FROM THE FREEDMEN PROJECT: What we want is to compile a list of Freedmen that would have been on the 1838 Removal. Jerry Clark tells me,he's hoping to match the surnames they used with their owners during the Removal period and possibly from there to their wills. If this could be done then we could compile a list of some Freedmen families on the Removal and hopefully then connect them to their later claims and descendants and include them in the honorariums to those individuals. NOTE: I have supplied many of you with names and family application numbers. In reguards to your Freedmen family member. We are now in the process of compiling names for those ancesters that "you want to be remembered." You must list that family members name and application number as well as how it connects up to your geneology. All surnames are needed for the applicant, you are requesting to be considered for the "honorariums." All personal information will be confidental and submitted to those in Washington who are working on the "honerariums" Each name requires a seperate form. As you can see from Jims words above in blue, we are looking to find all the names of those family members who were involved in the 1838 REMOVAL to Indian Territory. You must show your family members line back to the 1838 removal and were they were located at that time. Many of your family members may not have went to Indian Territory or just didn't give their name. But if you know who they are, and want them included in the HONORARIUMS, we need to show how your line goes back to that FREEDMEN. Your source material must be included. Those who cannot show direct desent will also be notified, to either update the application info or the request form will be disguarded. Hi Everyone, Jim Hicks compliled these for your use with the surname reports. GB07 = Gideon Blackburn's school 1806-1807 (Student roster) SPMS = Spring Place Mission School (Student rosters) NSPMS = New Spring Place Mission School (SPMS restablished in the Western Territory after removal. Student rosters) DET# = Detachment number (from various muster rolls, payroll records and ration receipts; which Detachment did they go west on) IHG = Indian Home Guard (Civil war muster rolls) N-Cher = Native Cherokee (1880 & 1890 Census used the following codes: N-Cher Native Cherokee A-White Adopted White A-Del Adopted Delaware A-Shaw Adopted Shawnee A-Col Adopted Colored etc. SB district = Skin Bayou District, CNW (in 1851 this was changed to Sequoyah District) Roll B: Cherokee that emigrated to the western territory after the 1851 Drennen were simply accepted into the Cherokee Nation. Around 1869 the western Cherokee Nation decided to require citizenship application before a committee. "Roll B", and there's a "Roll A" are lists of groups of emigrants that came west after 1851 (these lists were prepared in 1873) but they didn't include ALL of the emigrants, just those that weren't already recognized as Cherokee by 1869. I've found two more such "Roll"s, much smaller, from 1881 and 1883.
