    1. [YOUNG] John YOUNG Rev War Soldier NY
    2. Dianne
    3. Hi, Is anyone out there an SAR or DAR member, or a descendant of John YOUNG born Oct 1752 Windsor, CT, died Sept 1834 in NY? He served in Saratoga, NY. I have tried on 3 separate occasions to get pension papers on him from NARA, but they say they have no pension files. I already have tried the DAR site, which states him as a patriot, but I'd like to get a copy of his pension papers. I thought someone else besides NARA, might have a copy. Any leads would be appreciated. Thanks. Dianne http://www.deefamily.clickherefree.net/young.htm

    1. [YOUNG] Fountain Young
    2. There appear to be several Fountain Youngs. I can send the exact information if any of this is of interest. I found what appears to be several listings in the KY Federal Census Population Schedules Indexes as follows: 1860 & 1870 Casey County, KY (1850 Slave Schedule-may be owner), 1860, 1870 Kenton County, KY 1870 Lincoln County, KY Note it appears as if the marriage of Fountain Young and Mary E. Hines was 15 Feb 1869 in Lincoln County, KY Then there is no listing of Fountain Young in KY in the 1880 Census, according to the national index at www.familysearch.org; although there is one listing in TX for a soldier, aged 30.

    1. [YOUNG] William B. YOUNG
    2. EDWARD A SCRIVEN
    3. Since I submitted an earlier inquiry I have received better information on who I really am seeking. My aunt, Hazel Delores (or Ruth) SCRIVEN, married William P. YOUNG in Marion, Grant, Indiana, on 5 Jun 1924. I just received a copy of the marriage application and license. It shows his parents are John B. YOUNG, born in Canada, and Plina J. MUSIC, born in Kentucky. William is listed as born 24 Jun 1898 in Carbondale, Jackson, Illinois. William and Hazel are in Pontiac, Michigan for the 1930 Census. They have 3 daughters: Charlotte, 3; Audrey, 2; and Virginia, 2 months, all born Indiana. Hazel died 26 Dec 1987 in El Cajon, San Diego, California. If any of this is familiar to any of you, please contact me. I am interested in getting William's middle name, John's middle name, and Plina's middle name. I also do not know when or where William died. It would be most likely either in Michigan or California. He does not seem to be on the SSDI or the California Death Index. 1. [YOUNG] Fountain Young (son of Solomon Young)
    2. Dave Johnson
    3. I am trying to get some info Fountain Young, son of Solomon Young & Nancy Hines. My wife's great grandfather (Manuel R. Young - still living - b. 1911 Dallas, TX) was a son of a Fountain Young born in KY. This Fountain Young died in 1919 in Dallas, TX and is buried in Old Letott Cem. I have spoken to Manuel Young recently about his father and ancestors. He said that his father, Fountain Young, was born in KY. He was married prior to being married to Manuel's mother (Betti Willhight) and that first marriage produced five children, including two sons, James & Joseph, of whom Manuel spoke of (being his 1/2 brothers). I have seen an entry on rootsweb.com family trees of a Fountain Young, son of Solomon Young, who was born in Pulaski Co., KY and died in Texas. I believe that this Fountain Young is the same Fountain Young as my wifes 2nd great grandfather, who married once in KY and second in Texas in abt. 1899. I have also seen some info which suggests that Fountain Young (son of Solomon) md. a Susan. Perhaps he was also married to a Mary E. (Hines?), making him married three times, should this Fountain be the one I'm looking for. What are the chances that there were two Fountain Youngs born in KY and both dying in Texas? 1. [YOUNG] Scotch-Irish Genealogical Research Materials
    2. It is only on rare occasions that I add a book to the list of "must haves" for the study of Scotch-Irish genealogy.  This one is for our friends with Pennsylvania connections and it is certainly a rare item.   Published in 1856 "by a descendant" it is titled: "A Tribute to the Principles, Virtues, Habits and Public Usefulness of the Irish and Scotch Early Settlers of Pennsylvania,"   Chambersburg, Pa., Printed by M. Kiefer & Co. 1856, 171 pages.   >From the preface the following:   "The writer of the Tribute contained in this work, had long desired to see from the Historical publications in Pennsylvania, a vindication of the character and principles of the Irish and Scotch early settlers of this great State and their descendants against reproach, as well as aspersion, cast upon them in some modern publications having pretensions to Historical accuracy...The writer, feeling as if the sand of his Time glass was nearly run out, and that he ere long must be laid aside from labor... has hastily thrown together in his leisure hours, taken from other avocations, the remarks contained in the subsequent pages." Those other avocations are Dr. Foote's Sketches of North Carolina and Virginia, Day's Historical collections, Dr. Smith's Old Redstone, Dr. Alexander's Log College, Dr. Miller's Life of Dr. Rogers, Dr. Elliott's Life of McCurdy and others, Craig's History of Pittsburgh, Hazard's Colonial Records and Archives of Pennsylvania, and American Archives by Force and Gordon's History of Pennsylvania, Mr Rupp's Histories of Lancaster, Cumberland and Franklin counties. The style of writing and knowledge of early Presbyterian history indicates the author may have been a member of the clergy*.  There is a lot of detail on the early members of the church as well as problems with the Indians and the struggle over land rights during the westward expansion.   The book reads a bit like Prof. Hagy's thesis on the early frontier settlement at Castle's Woods, Virginia and it is a combination of history, genealogy and geography. *I have been told recently that Judge Chambers is the author of this work. Listed below are the other books and manuscripts previously offered to the various surname lists that are predominately Scotch-Irish: The Laggan and its Presbyterianism and In the Days of the Laggan Presbytery, 1905,1908, by the Rev. Alexander Lecky, B.A., member of the Royal Sociey of Antiquaries of Ireland, Belfast, Davidson & McCormack, 54 Kings St.  211 pages    On our recent trip to Donegal we met J.B. Shannon, age 90, who assisted in the 1975 reprinting of this book.  He is the last living person who had anything to do with these books and he says they are still the BEST source for Ulster Presbyterian research.  From Lecky I quote, "The lists of names of former generations of Lagganeers, and their places of abode, that are given in the Appendixes, and which NEVER before appeared in print, whilst they may of necessity prove dull reading to those who have no acquaintance with the locality, will not, I hope, be altogether uninteresting to those who bear the same name, or live in the same places..." Fighters of Derry, Their Deeds and Descendants, being a Chronicle of Events in Ireland during the Revolutionary period 1688-1691, by William Young, Eyre and Spottiswoode, London, 350 pages.    One of the most difficult sources to locate, in fact almost impossible.  Months worth of reading and packed with great genealogy.  Contains the following biographical sketches:    1.  The leaders of the County Associations who, with their levies, took part in the preliminary operations and contributed much of the man power for the Defence. 2.  The Apprentice Boys and those responsible for shutting the gates on the 8th Dec. 1688. 3.  The actual Defenders during the 105 day siege (over 1200 genealogical sketches) 4.  Those engaged in the relief of the city A History of the Siege of Londonderry and Defense of Enniskillen in 1688 and 1689, with Historical Poetry and Biographical notes, by the Rev. John Graham, M.A. Rector of Magilligan in the Diocese of Derry.  Includes the Battles of the Boyne, Athlone, and Aughrim and the siege and Capitulation of Limmerick by Lord McCaulay, Toronto, 1869    The historical poems are family genealogies about those who were at Derry and where they came from.  Along with "Fighters of Derry" these two sources contain more actual genealogical information than any others I have seen. Three Hundred Years in Innishowen, Being More Particularly an Account of the Family of Young of Culdaff with Short Accounts of Many Other Families Connected with Them, by Amy Young, 1929, The Linenhall Press, Belfast, 311 pages.    Some of the names included are Young, Hart, Harvey, Cary, Vaughan, McLaughlin, Skipton, Richardson, Knox, Ussher, Smith, Nesbitt, Chichester, Ball, Lawrence, Crofton, Boyd, Stuart and many others. The Laggan and its People, by S.M. Campbell, privately printed. A look at the history of the Laggan (Presbyterian Derry/Donegal) through the eyes of a local historian. Draws on local lore, Abercorn papers, records from PRONI. The Tinkling Spring: Headwater of Freedom, A Study of the Church and Her People, 1732-1952, by Howard McKnight Wilson, 1954, Fisherville, Virginia 542 pages    The best source of information on the Scotch-Irish of Augusta/Rockbridge Counties in Virginia.  Includes the Baptismal Records of the Rev. Craig.  In-depth study of the early families of the Shenandoah Valley. Castle's Woods: Frontier Virginia Settlement, 1769-1799, a thesis presented to the Faculty of the Department of History, East Tennessee State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of master of Arts, by James W. Hagy, 1966, 150 pages.    The most popular of the documents offered, this covers the families who settled in Russell county, Virginia when it was considered the frontier.  If your ancestors came through southwestern Virginia, this document is the history of your family.  Contains information on specific families as well as the farmers, speculators, artisans, and preachers who resided there.  Lots on the Indian battles that were a daily feature of life on the frontier.  Names like Russell, Walker, Porter, Cowan, Houston, Boone, Montgomery, Fraley, Thompson, Anderson, Kilgore, and 50 or so other "Scotch-Irish" families make this an invaluable resource for your family history. The Reverend Samuel Houston, V.D.M., by George West Diehl, 1970, McClure Publishing Co. 125 pages History of the early Virginia Presbyterians through the life of the Rev. Samuel Houston, kin to Sam Houston of Texas fame. The Stirling Merchant Gild and Life of John Cowane, founder of Cowane's Hospital in Stirling, by David B. Morris, Town Clerk, Stirling, Jamieson & Munro, LTD. 1919, 367pages. This is really two books in one.   The first part deals with the Gild. Laws, history, struggle with Unfreemen and with the Crafts, Administration, Merchandising, Conditions of entry, etc. and the second part which is about the life of John Cowane, Dean of the Gild and his contributions to it. Well there you have it.  The best documents I have found.  If you are interested in purchasing any of the above items (I would like to make copies for free but I can't) contact me at cscunc@aol.com for  details. Regards, Robert Cowan 525 Harrogate Rd. Matthews, North Carolina 28105

    1. [YOUNG] William Lindsay YOUNG
    2. EDWARD A SCRIVEN
    3. I am looking on information on just one person named William Lindsay YOUNG. Our family is trying to establish if he might be my father's half-sister's husband. He was born 2 Feb 1893 in Illinois, and he died in Los Angeles, California, 2 Jul 1959. The William YOUNG we are seeking was in Pontiac, Michigan, on the 1930 Census, aged 37, with wife, Hazel, and daughters, Charlotte, Audrey, and Virginia. Hazel was born Hazel SCRIVEN, and she is my father's half-sister. We believe she and William married in Grant County, Indiana, about 1924-1926, moved to Pontiac, Michigan just about the time of the 1930 Census and eventually went to California. If anyone is related to this man and can prove or disprove his being the same man who married Hazel SCRIVEN, please contact me. 1. [YOUNG] Clifford Young
    2. Diane C
    3. I'm trying to locate a Clifford Young who may have had a child with Lucy Michel Jones in the mid 1920's in Spokane, Washington. I have a Certificate of Birth from the Deaconess Hospital in Spokane listing Clifford Young of Barlow Emp. Office (residence) as being the father of an unnamed male child who was born on May 29, 1926. It was signed by R. E. Beneviste (Physician). The baby died within a year or two I believe but I'm not sure exactly when. Lucy Michel, (b. 1897, Polson, MT) was listed as the mother. Lucy and Clifford weren't married. I have found a Clifford Young who was institutionalized at the Washington State Penitentiary (Walla Walla) on January 11, 1919. He was sentenced out of King County for Burglary 2nd. He was given a sentence of 1 -15 years and was subsequently paroled February 9, 1920. He was discharged on July 26, 1921. This may be the same Clifford Young Lucy had a relationship with. Lucy is the biological mother of my father, Robert Webb (b. 1923, Spokane, WA) who was adopted out of Spokane, WA in the mid 1920's. Lucy also had another child, Franklin Jones, who was born June 12, 1926. She lists Herbert Lee Jones of the Pedicord Hotel, Spokane, as the father. Herbert had already been dead for five years so that was impossible. Franklin was committed from Spokane County to the State Custodial School where he died of Entro Colitis according to the certificate of death on Nov 19, 1926 and he was buried at Medical Lake. Franklin's father on the death certificate was listed as unknown. If anyone has any info on the above people, or know of another avenue I may take to pursue more information, besides contacting the Washington Department of Corrections, which I have already done, I would really appreciate it. Thank you, Diane Caudle diamond@vnet.net

    1. [YOUNG] Henry T. D. Young
    2. I did not find my Henry T. D. Young born July 4, 1847 somewhere in Ohio, wife Cyrena Smith Young. But I did find a lot of YOUNG's listed in Missouri that was in WW I. Maybe someone could find a YOUNG they are missing. Or maybe another name. I did find my Uncle and My grand father, his brother, which gave me an approximate date for his birthday. It also gave me a middle initial. Some of them tell where the person was born and some of them do not. Anyway if you are missing some relatives that may have served during WW I check this data base out. <A HREF="http://www.sos.state.mo.us/archives/ww1/">http://www.sos.state.mo.us/archives/ww1/</A> Good luck Judy Born with a 12 foot question, looking for a 6 inch answer

    3. http://www.deefamily.clickherefree.net/genepage.htm Hi, I am new to this list and wanted to share my website for my Young family line. I am a descendant of John YOUNG, 1752 - 1834, who was a Rev.War Solider in the Battle of Saratoga, NY. He is a descendant of Vicar Christopher YONGES and the lineage written in the "Youngs Family" Genealogy by Selah Youngs Jr. My question is about Seth Young and his wife Hannah Lawrence, who died in Torrington, Litchfield, CT. Does anyone know of their place of burial? We hope to be traveling to CT this spring and I'd like to try to get some pictures of headstones. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Dianne

    1. [YOUNG] List of Youngs in Civil War
    2. The following web site has a searchable database to look-up soldiers and sailors that served in the Civil War. Since it gives the unit's name, it is fairly easy to request a pension file from the National Archives. The web site is run by the National Park Service. My search on the surname Young showed over 10,000 who served. This includes Union and Confederate. I sent for my relative's file and received over 100 pages of original documents detailing his life, service, and widow's life. It was well worth it. http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm
