Debbie, Senator John McCain's line is as follows: Mary Young m. _______Lamont, Scotland, b. 1646 Four of her sons escaped the massacre at Toward Castle by fleeing to Northern Ireland with her in 1646. Each son changed his surname to protect himself and his family. The oldest son, John, took the name Sitlington, which was the name of a stream or "burn" on their Scottish estates. The two middle sons took the names White and Green. The youngest son, Andrew, took his mother's maiden name of Young. The line now continues: Andrew Young m. Mary Adair, Ireland after 1646 John Young m. Annie Houston, Ireland, date ?, We do know that this is the same family from whence sprang Texas Sam Houston. Hugh Young m. Agnes Sitlington, Ireland, date ?. John Young m. 1) Mary White, 2) Mary Sitlington (both cousins). Six children were born to the first wife, ten to the second. John was an aid to General George Washington. He achieved the rank of Captain. David Young m. Mary Ann Hart, Augusta Co., VA, he was the fourth son. David was an Army Captain in the War of 1812. Samuel Hart Young m. _________, moved to Mississippi. Elizabeth Ann Young m. ______ McCain ______McCain m. ____________ John Sidney McCain m. ___________ John S. McCain Jr. m. ____________ Senator John S. McCain III m. _________ The McCain material comes from Senator McCain's book. He neglected to give information on the wives names, dates, etc. If you find this connects to your line, I would recommend you try to get the book - The David Young and Mary Ann Hart Family by James Kimble Young Jr. Kim was a very thorough researcher. The book is only in three libraries that I know about. I have seen this book and got it through interlibrary loan from the Illinois Historical Society. Senator McCain's family is in this book. I do have more detailed information from a professional genealogist on the death dates and places of burial in Ireland. What helped me connect in my search of 25+ years were the three details that my dad told us all the years we were growing up: 1) he said our name had not always been Young, that it had been changed because of some trouble, 2) that we came from VA and, 3) that our ancestors came to America from Ireland. He was very much interested in family history, but genealogy was not a very common hobby and he always thought he could not learn any more than he knew because there were no "oldsters" left to tell him. He had asked his dad all the questions and gotten what he could from him before his dad died when dad was 17 years old. My older brother has a memory of the first time he asked our dad where our family came from. He was about 8 years old. This was the first time we heard the three clues I outlined above. Dad was very free with his knowledge of the family and talked about it anytime he was asked. My Mom says he talked about it all the 24 years they were married before he died in 1965. My line descends from Hugh Young's brother, Robert Young, who m. Agnes Crockett in Ireland before 1730. There was also a brother William. There most likely were other Young brothers (maybe James and John?) who came to America during the same time period. Hugh and Robert came with their families in 1740 and 1741 and settled in Augusta Co., VA after having landed in PA. Kim also wrote 57 other books on his family. I have been able to see four. There have been at least three other authors who wrote books about the Lamont/Youngs. If you have further interest, please email me off list.
