    1. Re: Young's, PA to KY
    2. Hi, I saw your info on the Young email list concerning the book: Names: Descendants of Jacob Young of Shelby Co KY including President Harry S Truman. There is a family story that our Youngs are related to Harry Truman. I have not as yet been able to make a connection. This same story has come from 3 different people who are descended from a common Young. I might be interested in sending for the book, but you had mentioned to the other individual that he should send you what he knew first. These are my Youngs: Fountain Young b:? died before 1815 probably in KY. m: Tabitha Chafin, 16 Jul 1798 in Rockingham Co., NC. Fountain may have had a brother named John Young - a John Young was listed as a witness to the marriage. Fountain and Tabitha lived in Rockingham Co., NC, Washington Co., VA, Greenup Co., KY and Floyd Co., KY. Known children are Omega, Christopher, Thomas, Betsey, Moriah, Mary Ann. It's possible that there was also an older son named Lemuel. After Fountain's death the family moved to Clermont Co., OH, and Brown Co., OH. Tabitha remarried a Spencer Spears in Floyd Co., KY and then married a Gersholm Harvey in Clermont Co., OH. My person of interest, their son Christopher married a Barbara Mitchel and moved on to Jeffersonville, Clark Co., IN. I did some looking into the Young ancestors of Harry Truman, but haven't been able to find a connection. We come through Christopher and Barbara Mitchel Young's son Lemuel. I made contact with a descendant of Christopher and Barbara's son John D and she was also told that they were related to Harry Truman. I also have made contact with a descendant of Fountain and Tabitha's son Omega and she thought so too. But unfortunately none of us has been able to prove it. If you think that this book would be of any interest to me, let me know. Thank you for your time, Judy York

    2. I read your message about look-ups. Could I ask a favor that is off the subject of Youngs? My mother's family BOYCE, supposedly came here because of a crime committed, involving a death. 3. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 18, 2000 7:06 PM Subject: The 'Forgotten' Census of 1880 In 1880, the Federal government did a special census of people in mental asylums, jails and who were otherwise "dependent," or inmates of public institutions. It was officially labeled SUPPLEMENTAL SCHEDULES, 1-7: DEPENDENT, DELINQUENT AND DEFECTIVE CLASSES. It is a valuable tool for obtaining personal information not available on the regular census. In the case of my husband's ancestor, we had copies of the court document that committed her to "the lunatic asylum of this state" on 1 Dec 1879. This was the state of Georgia, and she had resided in Harris County. I did not know where the state mental asylum was. I obtained the Supplemental Schedules for GA (two reels of microfilm containing all counties), and went through them. I found the asylum in Milledgeville, Baldwin Co. I also found our Elizabeth, discovered her diagnosis, how long she had had the symptoms, if she was restrained (when and how), how long she was prescribed to stay, etc. It also lists people in each county who were in orphanages, poorhouses, at home but deemed to be insane, idiotic, crippled or blind [official census words]; or in jails or prisons. There is an article about this census in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, V. 80, No. 1, March 1992, p. 57: "The 'Forgotten' Census of 1880: Defective, Dependent and Delinquent Classes," Ruth Land Hatten. This article includes all the instructions to the census taker, which helps to interpret the data found on the census report. It also tells where the census for each state is located (and gives appropriate microfilm numbers). I obtained mine from the National Archives. It took about two weeks, approximately $30 each reel. If you think you may have anyone who might be listed in this schedule, it could be worth pursuing. There is far more information given on this census than on the regular schedule. Depending on where the census is located for your state, it might be cheaper to hire a professional genealogist to obtain the information and relevent copies for you. 3. Dear List, I am looking for information on Fredricka Heinrietta (LUNING) YOUNG(bn. July 21, 1871 in Holstein, Warren County, Missouri). Wife of Herman YOUNG of Cantrell, Illinois. They were living in Cantrell in the late 1930's. She had a sister named Anna Lisette (LUNING) GADT and a brother named Heinrich Carl LUNING. Her mother and father were Heinrich Wilhelm and Louise (GREBE) LUNING. both from Germany. Her father died six months before her brother was born. Her mother then married Johann MOELLER/John MILLER. She had several half-siblings and step-siblings. It also mention that her husband's name may have been pronounced Harmon JUNG [german pronunciation]. The three LUNING children may have taken the MOELLER/MILLER last name[no proof]. Some of the children are also living in the Menard and Sangamon County areas in Illinois. Any information on these families would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Spelling and pronunciation may vary. Jackie

    2. My GEORG JUNG (YOUNG) was born around 1834 in Wuerttenburg, Germany and married a MARY (possibly Bonaker) b about the same time in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. In the 1860 census in Trumbull Co Ohio GEORG was 26 with his wife Mary and a one year old daughter (LIZZIE) Margaret Elizabeth (my great grandmother). In the 1860 census they could not be located but appeared again in the 1880 census with two sons, Daniel and William born around the 1860's. There were also two other children but names are unknown. Lizzie was married at the time and lived next door to the Youngs. ALSO, I bought a picture at an antique store of a little boy standing on a chair circa 1920's maybe earlier and his name is Wm Robert Young age 1 year. Also it is inscribed with the following: To: Hattie and Jimmie, From Billie Bobbie. Please contact me at [email protected] if anyone is familiar with these names. J L Murphy
