    1. [YORKSGEN] Sarah Jane BARRETT of Halifax

    3. To Margaret and listers Some while ago I raised the question of Sarah Jane's parentage. I received several hints but the important point was when Margaret spotted that the marriage of Thomas Barrett (now believed to be the father) to Mary Ann Nichol which was registered in 1889 - two decades after they appeared as man and wife in the census. Thomas first married Sarah Ann Schofield in 1848 and they had a son, Joseph Henry,  in 1849. Further children follow but in 1861 Joseph H is with Sarah Ann's parents, Thomas is with his parents ( plus, apparently, three of his children) whilst Sarah Ann appears to be recorded as the wife of James Gledhill and with a 3 year old daughter, Susanna, born in Newcastle upon Tyne. In 1871 Sarah and James with several children are recorded together. The family includes a Sarah Jane Gledhill born in 1864. Thomas Barrett is with Mary Ann Barrett and several children. There is a similar pattern in 1881. In 1883 the marriage of Sarah Jane Barrett and Joseph Saville is recorded with the brides father being named as Thomas Barrett. There is no earlier record of a Sarah Jane being in Thomas' family. Perhaps Sarah Jane Barrett/Gledhill are one and the same. The key point in this saga comes in 1889 when the following burial is recorded at Lightcliffe cemetery: Sarah Barrett aged 59, died 5 July 1889, buried 8 July 1889 . Plot 1093/ O/25. Owner, James Gledhill On the 1st December Thomas Barrett, now officially a widower, marries Mary Ann Nichol. They may not have had access to divorce proceedings but they did their thing anyway. My original Sarah Jane (b 1863) was the dau of William Robinson Barrett, a cousin to Sarah Jane Gledhill/Barrett. I do appreciate that there are rather too many assumptions in this story and that a collection of birth certificates may provide more clarification but that is not an option at the moment.   Regards Roger Family History Research: GILL, BERRY, CHARLESWORTH, ROBINSON and many others in the Holme Valley, south of Huddersfield. http://www.roger.d.gill.btinternet.co.uk/index1gen.htm http://rogergill.me.uk
