I'm new to the list and know I've missed a lot, but I'm trying to figure out what conference everyone is writing about. A previous email encouraged people to read the brochure but I haven't found a link for one. I may have missed it in the numerous links that come in each digest. I quickly scanned the GENUKI homepage but didn't see anything for a conference posted there either. Sorry to take up space regarding something that everyone else already knows about. Still, I trust Janice to report back to us with all details. From the website, there are a lot of questions unanswered, especially whether the bedrooms have any kind of permanent internet access and/or a table on which we can spread out our papers and work on our laptops. I say this because the website image of a bedroom in the Annex is one of a rather basic, somewhat bare room, with few facilities of this nature. Also, I went back to the website for York Univ. and saw that they offer year-round B&B accommodation at Wentworth College, a totally different accommodation venue from the one we usually use, with rates starting at ?30 B&B for a Single Ensuite room. - Check in from 2pm (luggage storage is available if you need to arrive earlier). - A deliciously Yorkshire Breakfast served in the Edge Restaurant - Tea and Coffee Making Facilities - Colour Television - Linen, towels and complimentary toiletries. - Twin and Single Rooms available. Surely, even if we have to pay for the internet, the facilities are better than at the racecourse. I accept that this is probably more expensive all round than the 2012 accommodation, but is it all that more expensive? Perhaps one way round the additional cost would be to schedule Yorksgen for a shorter period, say 10 instead of 14 days? It goes without saying that I am doing my d....est to be there next year in July and to stay for the entire period if possible - in a single room! Do forgive me for sounding fussy... I really do trust your judgement! Here it is: http://www.yorkconferences.com/bed_and_breakfast/Wentworth_College.aspx I do note the comment "rates start at", which implies that rooms may be more expensive in the month of July although one can always hope for a price negotiation for a group. We found it to be a very pleasant experience, with lovely walks to and from our destinations. Transportation was readily available, breakfasts were included, and the other meals were available. Have never stayed near the racecourse, so can't compare - and don't know if everything is the same as when we were there, but we both decided that we would be happy to stay there again. We considered it an excellent choice, especially for the price. Have NO desire to undermine what has been suggested, but there is time before then to explore other venues, since there seem to be questions surrounding the race course location. And there is a pub nearby. It's like Ryanair! What is thought to be a cheap option turns out to be far from it. The York FH fair is in June, before the end of the university semester (term). You also need to remember that Halifax Court is not suitable for anyone with mobility difficulties. York Tourist Office have a group section... website and email below. Might be worth emailing them, telling them what you need in the way of numbers. facilities, dates etc and see if they can come up with anything. I?ve used them (and other tourist offices in the UK) to book bed and breakfast accommodation for myself and always found them very helpful. You may find something better or as good as previous accommodation or you may not like any of their suggestions in which case you?re under no obligation to take them up and the service is free. Hope that helps! Jane http://www.groupvisityork.com/ groups@visityork.org ------------------------------ To contact the YORKSGEN list administrator, send an email to YORKSGEN-admin@rootsweb.com.
