    3. Hi Lin, On reading your email again. I can see your point. I was a little tired last night, as you might have gathered. I think I`ve found Margaret, his wife in 1911, and she is indeed a widow, living on her own. But everything else fits so I am really puzzled now. I have found a possible,  death for John in Dec 1902. It would be odd nearly 8 years later to present a watch to him and it has me puzzled, there no seem to be any likely candidates about. So I`m stuck at a brick wall now. I`ve checked the inscription and it reads. "To John Thompson, in recognition of his faithful services from Mrs Von Halle & family January 1910". It seems Morits or Moritz the head has died in the March quarter. Maybe all the servants were presented with something at this time. Perplexed and Puzzled, but fresh for further challenges. I`m hoping to get into my local library this afternoon but everything I`d planned to look for has gone pear shaped. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to let me have the information last night Lin. Hope you have luck with your own research. George. >________________________________ > From: Lin <dml5481@hotmail.com> >To: George Carter <gacarter@btinternet.com>; YORKSGEN@rootsweb.com >Sent: Sunday, 19 August 2012, 22:05 >Subject: Re: [YORKSGEN] John Thompson & Von Halle family in Bradford > .  > >George > >I hate to dash your hopes, but don't think this is your John in 1901. > >From 1901 census Bradford, Yorks RG13//4158 folio 43 page 26 > >John THOMPSON 49, mar, coachman, born Donnington, Lincs >Margaret THOMPSON, 44, mar, Doncaster, Yorks >Emmiline THOMPSON, dau, 17, clog iron mender, Badford, Yorks > >(JohnWilliam married Margaret  Beach STEELS in 1892 Manningham. The only thing that has me wondering about the findings is that on todays, map It`s about 3 miles by road from Park Drive, where the Von Halle family were living and Canary Street, where John Thompson was living. I expected to find him a bit nearer than that.  Has anyone any experience of servants living away from the home of the employer in the 19th and early 20th century?. I know today it wouldn`t take long to bob from one address to the other, but it seems a bit far in the time before the motor car. I expected him to be close to hand. There is a possibility that the streets on todays map don`t correspond where they were in 1901 has anyone any local knowledge? Has anyone any thoughts on this. Thanks for any help. George. ..... 3. Hi George Tried the newspapers to see if I could help: The Bradford Observer (Bradford, England), Monday, February 22, 1875 On the 20th at 3 Oak Villas, the wife of M von Halle, Esq of a daughter The Morning Post (London, England), Monday, November 22, 1897 On the 17th inst at the Synagogue, Bradford, Yorkshire, by the Rev Joseph Strauss PhD, Louis Joseph son of Joseph E Nathan, JP of Wellington, New Zealand to Betty? [the paper is curved here and not very clear] eldest daughter of Maurice Von Halle of Rouse Field, Heaton, Bradford. http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/26361/pages/96/page.pdf Moritz von Halle and the Nathan family mentioned here. Jan 6 1893 What if John and Margaret had split up and were living apart? She might call herself a widow rather than say she had been 'deserted' (or left her husband?) The other possibility - what happened to eight year old John in the 1881 census - could it be the watch was presented to him rather than John who was married to Margaret? good luck!
