This might sound stupid to many of you but I'll just throw it out there. It seems to me if a family tended to name their children Charles, William, Edward, Elizabeth, Mary, etc., they were likely to have been Royalists and those that used Jeremiah, Matthew, etc., probably would have been Puritans or Parliamentarians. Was this generally true? I've been wondering what their lives may have been like mid 1600's depending on what side they took yet how can you know for sure. Any thoughts appreciated. Just noticed on BBC Four tonight 8pm to 9pm and probably on BBC I player if you miss it: Roundhead or Cavalier An investigation into whether the divisions created during the English Civil War in the 17th century are still evident in modern British society. The programme explores how the Royalists and Parliamentarians' differing attitudes to democracy, monarchy and individuality influenced the lives of Britons for centuries afterwards, and features contributions by Julian Fellowes, AS Byatt, Philippa Gregory and Ann Widdecombe. Maybe some truth in the naming patterns - though as time went on it may be they just used the Royalist/Parliamentarian name because it was passed down through the family? eg I have a Charles in my family who was a non conformist 1793-1846 so guess he wasn't particularly fond of the monarchy. York Castle museum has (or did have) a wonderful exhibit about a man who fought in the Civil War - he was the son of a wealthy merchant in Cambridge (I think - while since I've seen it) who went to University, but then converted to the wrong religion and his father stopped his allowance. He came to York and set up as a publican but went off to fight (probably for the Parliamentarians) and his diary describes floundering around in mud. I remember one entry he talked about how some of his soldier pals came to the pub and they spent the night talking about all their exploits, boasting and bragging and after they'd all gone his wife said to him 'you don't know how many nights I've sat here worried about you' and he recorded he felt very ashamed of himself. Jane Still chasing Robert W(h)eldrake (any likely spelling considered) who married Susanna ? and turned up in Birstall, near Huddersfield in 1708! Anyone fancy a challenge in tracking him down?! -----Original Message----- From: Margaret Cambridge Sent: Saturday, July 14, 2012 7:45 PM To: yorksgen-l@rootsweb.com Subject: [YORKSGEN] Royalist Question This might sound stupid to many of you but I'll just throw it out there.
