Hello from the Colonies, Listers, I have a Yorkshire Blackburn who ended up a long way from home. I live in Clifton, northern Virginia in the US, and was just recently looking into the Yorkshire origins of this man, Col. Richard Blackburn. I found one or two possibilities with Ancestry. I constantly try to find connections among somewhat well-known Americans and their Yorkshire roots. Blackburn built his Yorkshire Plantation just a few miles from where I live; I don't believe it still stands. Half a mile away there is also Blackburn's Ford over the nearby Bull Run River which played some crucial role during the Civil War in the States: Near Manassas in Prince William County, Virginia --- The American South (Mid-Atlantic) McLean Farm (Yorkshire Plantation) Inscription on a public plaque: Part of an early 18th century plantation established on Bull Run by Col. Richard Blackburn formerly of Yorkshire, England, the land was acquired by Wilmer McLean in 1854. The battle which opened 1st Manassas raged across this farm July 18, 1861, with the house and barn used as a headquarters and hospital by Confederate troops. Following 1st Manassas, in an attempt to escape the forefront of the war, McLean moved his family to the tiny village of Appomattox Court House. There, four years later, the war would come full circle to end in McLean's parlor with Lee's surrender to Grant, April 9, 1865. Erected 1988 by Prince William County Historical Commission. (Marker Number 48.) Marker series. This marker is included in the Virginia, Prince William County Historical Commission marker series. Location. 38° 47.59? N, 77° 26.863? W. Marker is near Manassas, Virginia, in Prince William County. Marker is on Centreville Road (Virginia Route 28), on the right when traveling south. Marker is at intersection of Centreville Road and Yorkshire Lane. Located beside parking lot of CVS/pharmacy. Marker is in this post office area: Manassas VA 20110, United States of America. Hi Roy I've only just picked this up and haven't been able to give it any significant attention yet, but after a quick peek at Ancestry's West Yorkshire PRs and census collections I think I might well have a connection on the Craven line. William Henry Craven's father was Joshua Stansfield Craven, and (shock horror!) it appears from the 1891 census that he married a Londoner. Never mind - 1861 shows him as son of another Joshua, born in Wortley (Leeds) about 1829. This Joshua appears in a tree shared with me by a fellow researcher (and not fully verified by me) as son of another Joshua, who descends from Abraham Craven and Elizabeth STANSFIELD, and then two further Abrahams. The furthest back, who was buried in Calverley in 1770, was my 6x great grandfather. He married Ann CARR (buried 1784) in 1729 - and if you can find out any more about either of their origins you're cleverer than I am. But I think this makes me something like a 7th cousin to your subject. As far as I can determine, Abraham, the possible ancestor of your subject, was the fourth child of Abraham Craven and Ann Carr, baptised 19 Feb 1736/37; my ancestor was Benjamin, their 9th and youngest child, baptised 30 Sep 1750. Benjamin, however, has his own rather more modest claim to fame: he was Parish Clerk in Calverley for 30 years (from his burial entry), but at some stage Sexton as well; the position of Sexton passed to his son James, who held it for 40 years, and then James's son Benjamin, who by 1876 had held it for another 25 - see Cudworth's "Round About Bradford" p.460. There's an outline of my tree at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~arthurk/ - use the Name Index or look at the Bartle chart (lower part) to find the Craven connection. I can supply fuller information if you wish, and I look forward to seeing the results of your endeavours.
