That isn't as daft as it sounds because many families desired to keep the name in the family. If the first baby died after it was baptised, then a later child could have been given the same name. I found a prime example of that when I was researching for my book. A family had arrived at the church asking for thirteen children to be baptised. They made a note that several of them had been given the same name and this was to replace the lost ones. The repeat names sometimes had Cater after their name.
