This could be tricky. I am trying to locate a book, though I don't know the title nor the author. The clues I have are these: In a letter dated 17th Aug 1790 a lady wrote to her correspondent: "I saw an old book describing Coats of Arms that were painted in Yorkshire Churches; the Arms of the del la Hays of Spaldington were mentioned as being in the windows of Bubwith, North Cave and Eastrington" Does anyone have a clue to which book she was referring, published pre-1790? Could it be this book? http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=VRfxelohUfoC&pg=PA42&lpg=PA42&dq=the+Arms+of+the+del+la+Hays+of+Spaldington&source=bl&ots=9xFa_Z4EgD&sig=kEkGE6718-3wo6nPFTvTFSdK8NQ&hl=en&sa=X&ei=4lpGVNXhEMqf7gaw0oDICA&ved=0CCwQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=the%20Arms%20of%20the%20del%20la%20Hays%20of%20Spaldington&f=false I put this in Google Arms of the del la Hays of Spaldington and came up with the above link. Called 'Early Yorkshire Families' Edited by Charles Travis Clay and Diana Greenway Google also came up with other links too Victor On 21/10/2014 1:14 PM, Colin Withers via wrote: > This could be tricky. > > I am trying to locate a book, though I don't know the title nor the author. > > The clues I have are these: > > In a letter dated 17th Aug 1790 a lady wrote to her correspondent: > > "I saw an old book describing Coats of Arms that were painted in > Yorkshire Churches; the Arms of the del la Hays of Spaldington were > mentioned as being in the windows of Bubwith, North Cave and Eastrington" > > Does anyone have a clue to which book she was referring, published pre-1790? > > Cheers > > Colin > > --- > This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/GEN-MEDIEVAL/2005-09/1127381595 Hi Colin I don't know about the book - unless you tried Google books and searched through that but putting arms of the del la Hays brings up a lot of info on Rootsweb (and I didn't know they had a medieval section either!) http://soc.genealogy.medieval.narkive.com/lFZlFDDK/thomas-de-la-hay-of-spaldington-his-wives-was-re-pcc-wills-progress or this which refers to a book - Wills of Yorkshire if I read the Latin right? Maybe coming at it from a different angle might solve the problem? I am not so much interested the del Hay family (well, I am, but not in this instance), it is the stained glass showing coats of arms in various churches that interests me. I have Glover's Visitation of 1584/5, published in 1873, which describes the arms in the windows of many churches in the East Riding (but not Bubwith or Eastrington which the lady refers to), but I was unaware of a much earlier book. So it is specifically that book that I am trying to track down. I did quite a bit of Googling before I posted my question in the group, but without success. Is there any chance that the reference might be to Thomas Beckwith, 1731 - 1786 ? It was the sort of thing he did. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Beckwith Nancy.
