I have actually given up on finding my gt.uncle but Lin I will help fill your inbox. Details are:- Herbert ROBINSON born 1870 Thornton nr Bradford West Yorks. Son of Ferguson & Sarah Hannah (ILLINGWORTH) Robinson, brother of Jane 1875 - 1943, Walter 1877 - 1940 & Harriet 1881 - 1966 (my grandmother) all born Thornton. I have Herbert in the 1871 census, 1881 census & 1891 census then his father on a passenger list arriving in Philadelphia, Penn, USA in 1898 with the notation that he is visiting his son. Fergus is back in Thornton for the 1901 census. There are plenty of Herberts of about the same age marrying in West Yorkshire but I was told that Herbert was never heard of again by any member of his family & I can't afford to buy all the certificates just to see if one of them has a father called Ferguson. Really is a curly one & a very common name. Cheers, Anita. New Zealand.
Hi Anita. just a couple of questions.Do you have Herbert in the States in 1900 census? If not I could do that for you tomorrow. If you know where he lived or could narrow it down that would help. I believe it's possible, but have never done it, that you can qualify a certificate by stating a parent...ie....you only want the certificate for Herbert if his father was Ferguson. Have you looked on ancestry at the trees?...I aren't a fan of them on the whole - but they can give a few pointers that could help narrow the search down. Leave those points for you to ponder over. ttfnTrishTerrigal NSW From: Anita Baucke via <[email protected]> To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, 4 February 2015, 10:01 Subject: [YORKSGEN] My Brick Wall - Herbert ROBINSON I have actually given up on finding my gt.uncle but Lin I will help fill your inbox. Hi Trish, The only clue is that my gt.grandfather went to Philadelphia & Herbert was a mill worker when in England so presumably he would carry on that job in the USA. Over the years I have found Herberts working on ships, as a mechanic, working in Boston etc etc - really was a common name & knowing only too well that changing names & ages was very easy. I had hoped that he came to New Zealand as both his sisters did. I tried to find my gt.grandfather's Will at Borthwick but it seems he didn't make one because I was hoping that Herbert would be mentioned in that. Many years ago a woman in Auckland that was a relation of my gt.aunt Jane told me that no-one ever heard of Herbert after he left England. Canada has also been a possibility, another story was he went to Mexico.???? Really is the proverbial brick wall. Many thanks for the offer & advise. Asking for a certificate I would have to give an approximate year of marriage & I wouldn't have a clue about that either. I keep waiting for someone, somewhere will be researching the Robinson lot & descend from my missing Herbert.
