I have just found an ancestor baptised in Silkstone parish church in June 1699. It looks as if his father was of “Smithies” but the writing is not clear. He could have been a smith but other entries in the parish register say things like “of Silkstone” after the father’s name so I guess that “Smithies” is a place. Does anybody know the of such a place near Silkstone? Peter in France Sent from Mail for Windows 10
Hi Peter......my 2xgrandfather, John Ogden, lived in Barnsley and when he died he left some "cottages" Smithies in his will in 1859. See this page for location: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smithies,_South_Yorkshire I believe Smithies has been swallowed up by Barnsley now. mary lou -----Original Message----- From: Peter Lee via <yorksgen@rootsweb.com> To: yorksgen <yorksgen@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wed, Mar 23, 2016 12:56 pm Subject: [YORKSGEN] Silkstone Parish I have just found an ancestor baptised in Silkstone parish church in June 1699. According to Genuki http://www.genuki.org.uk/cgi-bin/nearby there is Smithies in Royston which I think is about 6 miles from Silkstone. Marg >From the Beautiful British Columbia Cariboo Region, Canada
