I have been stuck on my STEPHENSON family forever. They seem to mysteriously disappear. I am hoping someone else is researching STEPHENSON from Birstall and may add a little tidbit that could lead to further research. My 4 x great grandfather was William STEPHENSON who I believe married Hannah DIXON 1 Dec 1795. They had: Frances, 1801 Elizabeth, 1803 David, 1805 Sarah, 1807 Hannah, abt 1809 (my 3 x gr grandmother married William ATKINSON 21 Jan 1828 Rothwell) James, 1813 I have found their baptisms, St Peter, Birstall and the parents were of Castle Hill... then that is it. Hi Marg Is that Castle Hill in Huddersfield - which is 10 miles away or was there a Castle Hill in Dewsbury? You may have already tried this but if it's Huddersfield then perhaps they switched to a closer church as new ones were built - Mirfield, Almondbury or maybe became Methodists? My Weldrakes did that - started with Birstall but then switched to Mirfield, Battyeford and non conformist churches. If it's Dewsbury then that's just three miles but even so they may have found a closer church. Or did they move over to Rothwell with the family which is how Hannah met and married William? The canal started in that area 1799, my Weldrakes were travelling up to York and I think Rothwell was on the canal. Did you trace what happened to Hannah's brothers and sisters? Did they stay local or move around?
