I read yesterday that Windows will automatically update you to W10 if you have set automatic updates. Good luck! Andy At 17:52 03/02/2016, you wrote: >This is good news. Hi Andy You may have misread that If you have Windows 7 or 8 and have automatic updates it will update either until they stop supporting them To Get Windows 10 you have to request it and until the end of July 2016 (if memory serves its July) its free, thereafter its chargeable I updated the wifes laptop W7 to W10 and had no problems, bar a few privacy tweaks needed I have mine to do soon Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 03/02/2016 19:25, Andy Micklethwaite via wrote: > I read yesterday that Windows will automatically update you to W10 if you have set automatic updates. I work on two computers. My laptop came with Windows 8 and I couldn't wait for an improvement, any improvement, so I upgraded to W10 at the first opportunity. These operating systems are Microsoft's way of making computers mimic smartphones and tablets, touchscreen operation, downloadable apps, that sort of thing. My laptop is touchscreen and it works tolerably. But Microsoft has responded to feedback in improving W8 into W10 and you can have the default desktop interface almost the same as for Windows 7. Mostly this is how I use it, and with a mouse rather than touchscreen. My desktop computer runs Windows 7. I feel most comfortable there. I know how it all works, it is so easy to view your files and to reorganise as you wish. I think it will be a mistake if Microsoft abandons this type of interface. For a start, I think many corporations and government departments will be happy for a long time to remain in this non-touchscreen mode of operation. And so it would be my wish for MS to offer both formats rather than eventually just phasing out support for W7. There will be people here who still happily run W5, and it works fine. My long-term genealogy software that has been upgraded continuously from DOS days has breezed through all Microsoft upgrades with no hiccups. Summary, Windows 10 is an improvement on W8 (not hard) but, for genealogy and most things, Windows 7 is a breeze. I just checked my local Dell online store and you can still purchase new and refurbished desktops and laptops with Windows 7 Professional. If you get repeated reminders to upgrade to W10 and you have no intention to, Microsoft supply instructions to stop them at http://microsoft-news.com/how-to-remove-windows-10-upgrade-notification-on-w indows-7-and-windows-8/, or google for instructions from other geek outlets.
