    3. Hi Murray I don't have XP any longer to be able to check, but from Microsoft Computers running Windows XP. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. If "x64 Edition" is listed under System, you're running the 64-bit version of Windows XP. If you don't see "x64 Edition" listed under System, you're running the 32-bit version of Windows XP Snipping not so bad but you don't need to repeat the footer note as thats on every post anyway but otherwise it looked fine Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 04/02/2016 19:22, mhhr wrote: > Nivard, I have Windows XP and following your advice neither of the > numbers 32 or 64 appears. > > Murray > NZ > > PS How was my snipping? --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus

    2. Brian via
    3. Again not sure how useful this is. I have Office 2003 running on Windows 10 64 bit without any problems. The only thing about this version is it is no longer supported by Microsoft. Windows 10 update for me caused no problems at all. I am sure you can get a small program from Microsoft to check if you have any programs which are not compatible with Windows 10. It will become necessary to upgrade as Microsoft stop the support for older versions and leave them vulnerable to hackers. My advice would be go for the upgrade whilst it is free (till July i think). If you have any concerns and to be honest even if you don't, create a Clone of your system (Plenty of software available) so you have a backup. If you do upgrade you can (for a month I think) role back to the previous system from within Windows 10 very easily. Brian -- From a Dog Walker and Birdwatcher.

    3. Hi Linda I had several answers on the theme of Windows 10 and FTM versions The latest said she had tested FTM16 and no problem, and even tested FTM version 6 predating yours and that worked (both needed a pdf printer but thats a known problem and free to get round) So the omens are good if you have a 64 bit machine Personally I would still try and get a later version of FTM and upgrade, keeping full back ups of all versions of database That way you would be covered for most eventualities Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 04/02/2016 02:06, Linda via wrote: > Nivard, It is VERSION 8. It was only recently that they stopped supporting Vista (released in 2007) and that was a miserable version. Most people I know still use WIN 7. When I bought my current machine, I went into Best Buy and 'test drove' WIN8 and didn't like it at all. I am not a tech neophyte. 3. Hello; Bill here from Ontario, Canada. I have a 64 bit system which was running Windows 7. I have two genealogy programs running one of which is FTM version 7.5 as well as other software including the Microsoft products. I downloaded Windows 10 last July and since then have received a number of updates. I have not experienced any problems with Windows 10 and all of my software runs without any difficulty including my FTM. The only issue I experienced was one of exceeding my bandwidth on the initial download. That is difficult to avoid if your bandwidth is less than 30 gigs. Since the initial download I have not experienced any problems which is something I can't say about earlier versions of Windows. The interface with Windows 10 is different than that of XP or 7 but it doesn't take any time to get the hang of it. Go for it and in time I think you will like it. 3. Office 365 gives you 1.0Tb (or is it 1.5Tb?) of storage on One Drive. You will be paying an annual subscription for Office 365 so make the most of One Drive storage. Just remember to move your files to the One Drive part of your computer. This will then allow you to access things from whatever computer, laptop, Tablet or mobile phone you use. It will also give you more space on the hard drive of your desktop or laptop. I too use Drop box but that is for when other people post to dropbox I get the message or files from them. When I moved my photos to the One Drive part I got a surprise. Before doing that I had them all stored in separate folders. These include every photo. I moved all the folders to the One Drive part of my computer and it started loading them on to there. The surprise was that I had over 40,000 photos! These are all on One Drive and when I visit relatives I am able to call up any photo on my mobile and show them. My mobile is a windows version so I am not sure if One Drive works with the other versions but they should Victor On 04/02/2016 9:39 AM, Jeanne Renshaw wrote: > My old Windows machine died so I bought a new computer and installed Windows 10, Family Tree Maker 2014 works just fine. 3. Yes it is 64 bit. My IT guy has WIN 10 on a couple of his machines, he also supports several mid to large sized companies so he has experience with WIN 10 on a number of machines. If and when MS stops supporting Win7 I will deal with it. It isn't necessary to stop the prompts to upgrade, just slightly annoying, so I have stopped them. If I want to upgrade, I still can. For now everything works fine and I will not upgrade. Thanks everyone, esp. 3. I work on two computers. My laptop came with Windows 8 and I couldn't wait for an improvement, any improvement, so I upgraded to W10 at the first opportunity. These operating systems are Microsoft's way of making computers mimic smartphones and tablets, touchscreen operation, downloadable apps, that sort of thing. My laptop is touchscreen and it works tolerably. But Microsoft has responded to feedback in improving W8 into W10 and you can have the default desktop interface almost the same as for Windows 7. Mostly this is how I use it, and with a mouse rather than touchscreen. My desktop computer runs Windows 7. I feel most comfortable there. I know how it all works, it is so easy to view your files and to reorganise as you wish. I think it will be a mistake if Microsoft abandons this type of interface. For a start, I think many corporations and government departments will be happy for a long time to remain in this non-touchscreen mode of operation. And so it would be my wish for MS to offer both formats rather than eventually just phasing out support for W7. There will be people here who still happily run W5, and it works fine. My long-term genealogy software that has been upgraded continuously from DOS days has breezed through all Microsoft upgrades with no hiccups. Summary, Windows 10 is an improvement on W8 (not hard) but, for genealogy and most things, Windows 7 is a breeze. I just checked my local Dell online store and you can still purchase new and refurbished desktops and laptops with Windows 7 Professional. If you get repeated reminders to upgrade to W10 and you have no intention to, Microsoft supply instructions to stop them at http://microsoft-news.com/how-to-remove-windows-10-upgrade-notification-on-w indows-7-and-windows-8/, or google for instructions from other geek outlets.
