Hi, I am using FTM 2014 so whether these comments apply to earlier versions I cannot say. But in FTM 2014 if you go to the "Person" screen (as opposed to the "Tree" screen), you see a list of entered details about the person in question. There are some buttons at the top right of the window containing those details. Facts, Timeline, Relationships, +, X. + (it is blue) is used to enter a new fact. Relationships is where you can change the status of an existing relationship, from natural father to step-father, say. I don't think you can create a new relationship there as I have tried but cannot see a way to do it. To create a new relationship that doesn't happen in the normal way you go to the "Person" menu item (as opposed to the "Person" screen) and choose Attach/detach person. It is not the easiest thing to use, backup before you start and be very clear in your mind as to what you want to do. It gets easier with practise. Does this answer the questions? On the person you wish to edit, right click or press F3, That will bring you to the facts page (you can also access Notes, Media, Web links the same way). At the top right hand side you will see a blue cross (like a plus sign) and a red cross (like a multiplication sign). On the blue cross there is a drop down box with birth, baptism, death etc, at the bottom is 'more' which brings up a whole new list of facts to add should you wish. It's in this list where you will find' Also known as'. To get to the relationship screen - click the People Tab on the top toolbar, then Person tab (this also brings you to the Facts page described above), and Timeline. Click the Relationships tab and on the right hand side you can amend father/mother using the drop down list). Just to throw in a total red herring my grandparents were another Harold and Sarah Smith. He was from the Malton/Norton area and she from the town of Pickering (loving the current videos of the Flying Scotsman chuffing up Newtondale) ! Cheers from Down Under Caroline

I also helped with the 1881 census transcription. I seem to remember being told that each set of returns were transcribed independently by two people and the results were compared by a third party. Where the transcription varied the third party then had the task of decided which transcription was correct. Obviously the original enumerator's spelling mistakes had to be transcribed as they appeared on the original census return. Maureen
Hello there. I've just received the birth certificate for my great aunt Maud Horsley HEPWORTH who was born in NRY in 1874. Lin & Christine. I have recently started using FTM 2012 upgrade version so are still finding my way. I am unable to find a "Facts" Page or a blue cross. (Lin) There is a "Manage Facts" option under "Edit" but doesn't seem to lead me in the right direction. I am unable to find a "Relationship" screen. (Christine) I have looked at "Help" but that didn't help either. I have a great uncle who was brought up by his aunt, not adopted, and changed his name when an adult. I would like him to appear in the index under both names. Help appreciated. I am using an old version of FTM. If I go to Facts page across the top of the box is Fact, Date, Comment/Location. If I enter 'Also known as' in the Fact box, then enter the comment a box comes up asking if I accept this new fact. Click ok .....and you will find it on the list of facts. Hello Everybody, With reference to John Hanson's message earlier today I was one of the transcribers and I did a small part of Carlisle. It was quite a nightmare because there were a lot of Irish people there. That resulted in a lot of unusual surnames and even worse was the large number of locations that were unknown to me. It was quite obvious the enumerators had quite a struggle to sort things out. To be more specific, when on an individual page, I click on MORE. There are then boxes on the right (Facts, Address, Medical, Lineage and Notes). Under Lineage you can add AKA as well as whether the person was adopted, step family, foster, or unknown. By the way, the other day I tried to open FTM and all my data had disappeared. I looked for a recent backup but the only one I could find was pretty old. Then I remembered that I subscribe to Carbonite (online automatic backup service). With a couple of clicks everything was restored. No, I don't work for them but very happy with the service. Judith Sorry for not replying earlier but was busy all day yesterday. As you have the answer from others it is not that I am replying about but who transcribed the 1881 census I believe that everyone should know and understand who transcribed what as many are blamed when in fact it is not their fault. The 1881 census was transcribed as a project between the LDS church (familysearch) and the English, Welsh and Scottish family history societies. The index that both Ancestry and Findmypast use is the same database that was original available nearly 20 years ago on CD and which many of us purchased! Thanks one and all for your suggestions regarding recording in Family Tree software and for giving me the info I requested previously about Sister-in-law etc. Brian -- From a Dog Walker and Birdwatcher.
Hi Brian and Lin, You can also go assign the new "father" as a step-father. First attach him as a father and then go into the relationship screen and change the relationship to step-father (or anything else you choose). Whether you want to do that or not depends what links you want to show. Thanks, Lin, for the info about 'Use AKA if available'. I have often used AKA but been frustrated as it didn't help in searches etc. Presumably this will remedy that. Go to Facts page and then click on the blue cross to 'add fact'. There is then the option of 'Also Known As' Once you've added this extra name got to Tools, Options, Names/Dates/Places and tick the option 'Use AKA if available' as an additional entry. Both names will now show in the index. This works just as well for forenames eg a person born Margaret but who was known all her life as Peggy.
