    1. Re: [YORKSGEN] Ordering Wills
    2. Thank you to everyone who took the time to help me with trying to find wills.  I hadn't realized that getting wills would have proved so difficult, timewise. I am happy to say that most of the wills I was looking for are in the process of being put in the mail, in just over 24 hours since I made the query.  How did that happen?   It certainly helps to have such good friends from the List....especially one who took a trip to Salt Lake City, Utah today and managed to get me copies of these wills.  That's something I learned ....The Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah has copies of wills up to a certain year.  So very very grateful to a friend for her help. Janet

    3. Last week I received a will that I'd ordered by post from Leeds - a mere three and a half months after I sent the order, though they paid my cheque in promptly enough. No explanation or apology, they wouldn't deal with enquiries over the phone, and email enquiries weren't even acknowledged, let alone replied to. 2. Well, I understand the feelings of those who have been before and ca n't come this year.  However, I couldn't take it an longer!  Like Jane, I have relented and have my husband working on an acceptable flight!!!  I can't convince him to come with me, though.  My l ast trip to York was in 2006 (I was a merry widow then, who drove a car full of Yorksgenners on various "adventures" on a number of occasions).  I've missed you guys!!!!!!  Jane's remark about "old people talking about dead people" clinched it for him.  Since that's how I spend most of my time helping people in my area with their genealogical problems, he knows only too well that her remark is true!!!!  He knows I can have a great time and I will come armed with laptop filled with pictures of wedding, grandchildren, & some genealogy as well. See you on the second week! Judy Peterson, Massachusetts, USA

    3. Dear all, > Today's Topics: > > 1. Re: yorksgen holiday > The more I read about the Yorksgen holiday, the worse I feel. I really can't make it. First, I am to be the keynote speaker at the British Historical Society AGM on July 11th in Lisbon - which rules the first week out. Then, AIIC - the association of which I am a Member of Council (i.e., sort of Board of Governors) is definitely considering moving our early July meeting to the last week in July in Geneva, so that's the second week out. In fact, there has been so much going on with the restructuring of AIIC since January that I haven't had a minute to devote to genealogy all year which is especially annoying because I have some urgent research in the Wakefield/Dewsbury/Hartshead area to carry out. So I guess I shall just have to sit here and read all of your wonderful emails about plans, doings, successes, etc., and go even greener with jealously. 3. Thank you so much to all the people who have been helping with this. The main consensus confirms our own interpretation as Doram (Durham) Staindale. However I have just discovered a hamlet called Staindale in the parish of Bilsdale Midcable which is only 14 miles from the Durham/Yorkshire border as the crow flies, so definitely worth investigating. It's not actually my family, it's a long standing brickwall of my friend going back over 20 years which we decided to have another go at. Brenda Original Message ----- From: JANICE WOOD To: CHRISTINE WILLOTT ; Brenda Green ; yorksgen Sent: Sunday, May 13, 2012 12:16 PM Subject: Re: [YORKSGEN] Help with deciphering please Hi Brenda, In 1851, that census enumerator's writing was not at all clear, however, in other pages he has written Durham quite clearly. He has also missed out the county names altogether in many entries. Thomas Hall, as written there in 1851, could easily be mistaken for James. Don't we wish they had given enumerators a handwriting test before they began!!! As Elizabeth is 81 in 1851, it is very likely that she didn't make it to be counted in 1861. Her family, with her grandson Thomas Hall, were in York in 1861, where some of their children appear to have been born, so perhaps she went to York with them in the early 60s. They lived then in the district of St Michael le Belfry. It might be worth looking in the parish registers for St Michael, and other nearby parishes, for Elizabeth's burial. There are several Elizabeth Dickson in the York Registration District in the deaths index, however, the YorkshireBMD index does help to narrow these down a bit. Although the index does not give any ages at that time, the parish register will. As there are 24 parish churches within the city of York, and several more within the York RD, it is a bit of a daunting task to search, and then she may have died in Hull before they moved to York. 3. Hello Brenda Might be a long shot but would you fancy: Doram = Durham i.e "somewhere up north" Staindale as an abbreviation for Staintondale which is certainly "up north" as far as Hull is concerned. 3. Hi Brenda, In 1851, that census enumerator's writing was not at all clear, however, in other pages he has written Durham quite clearly. Good luck! Some enumerators hand writing is easier to read than others. 3. Hi Chris, If there are more people travelling from York than we can accommodate in our cars, we can hire a minibus. The more the merrier!!! Jackie might have to think about hiring a larger venue for the day? There seems to be a widespread belief that all census enumerators must have been literate and well educated men. I do not believe this necessarily to be the case, especially in 1851! Just because someone could read and write - when perhaps the majority of the people they were dealing with couldn't - didn't necessarily make them top of the class in spelling. We also have to remember the problem of accents and pronunciation in different parts of Yorkshire. The enumerator wrote down what he thought he heard and "Doram" could certainly be attributed to Durham. I also think the, admittedly indistinct, place name could be Staindale. -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."
