I am trying to sort out various Robinsons in north east Cleveland and have a clutch of wills from the Loftus/Lofthouse area where my ancestor Robert Robinson married in 1714 (from his gravestone at Skelton he would have been born around 1687). At his marriage in 1714 he was said to be "de Lofthouse" but his wife was from Skelton. The clutch of wills belong to people with known family forenames (John, Thomas and Robert). They are from the first 30 years of the 1700s and one will of a Robert Robinson who died in 1723 mentions two sons, Robert and Francis. "My Robert" who married in 1714 had sons John, Robert, Francis and Thomas (in order) so I am drawn to this particular line because of the Francis connection. Apart from land at Loftus the 1722 will of Robert senior mentions land at Barnby, Lythe which may have come from the wife's (Margaret?) side of the family as she was the first to inherit. I have also found records relating to a Francis Robinson who was the schoolteacher at Lythe who died in 1765, although his will gives no clues to a connection with "my Robert". Sorry if this sounds a bit complicated! My query is whether there would be any records for schoolteachers at that time - i.e. did they need any formal qualifications (other than being able to read and write) and would there be any records/archives that might give further information on him. One further query - I have just noticed that Robert's 1714 marriage licence was sealed and delivered in the presence of a John Robinson (not the bondsman), but I am assuming this John could have been a cousin and not his father?? Hi Tony I think you may well be right but it would be just the 12th Lancers then as they did not amalgamate with the 9th until 1960 I am embarrassed not to have recognised it as its my brothers regiment or rather was I mislead myself by looking for a 13th when it was 12th, looking further than I need Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) PS note to self, get eyes checked <g> On 05/07/2012 10:50, Tpattinson wrote: > Anne > > It would appear to be 9th/12th Lancers > > Tony
Anne, It would appear to be the 12th Royal Lancers - they were almagated with the 9th in 1960 to form the 9/12. Hi Anne I have several books on the subject yet failed to find a match for the badge in the photo The nearest I can find is the crossed Kukri badge of the Gurkha regiments but am not convinced of that The photo is very low resolution, is there a chance of a better quality scan? I notice what looks like an XIII badge on his shoulder but again I can find nothing that fits Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 05/07/2012 09:43, Anne Garrison wrote: > I am trying to work out which regiment my Uncle, Leslie Davey served in during WW2. > Although he lived almost all of his life in Spofforth (between Harrogate & Wetherby), I remember my Aunt (his wife) saying that he was called up to a London regiment as he was working in London at the time. > I have a photo which shows a cap badge, I have found a lot of sites with cap badges (mostly wanting to sell them) but I haven’t found anything similar. Maureen's posting about the Pontefract liquorice festival prompted me to write. (And I do miss Pontefract Cakes). I apologize now for the length of this missive but it is a holiday! Does anyone from Pontefract remember Dr. Freda WALTON or her parents? She lived at 4 Carleton Park Avenue, Pontefract and had her surgery at 16 Argyle Road, Ferrybridge. Throughout my childhood we had sporadic, unannounced, visits from Aunt Freda (no relation) and she never forgot my birthday. She had met my parents at University in Leeds and they remained life long friends. Freda never married and was a GP in Pontefract from the time she qualified until she retired and, although I saw her as late as 1990, I knew little about her life. Her parents may have lived in Pontefract but I'm not certain about that. The family had some association with Knuzden near Blackburn, Lancs and she (or her parents) named their house in Pontefract 'Knuzden'. I don’t know when or where she was born but there are several birth records on FreeBMD that are possible. I would say that she was about the same age as my mother who was born in 1921. She died in the late 1990s. Not knowing the names of Freda's parents is a problem because I am trying to find a connection between Freda's family and a Tom Naisby born in Blackburn in 1909, son of George William Naisby and wife Margaret Sharrat (married 1904 in Blackburn). Tom was a news reader for 23 years and died in 1972. 'On January 26th, 1971 BBC Radio Blackburn went on air at noon, opened by Tom Naisby, who had been the voice of the old BBC North Region (in Manchester).' Tom had two sons, John and Stephen. In 1971 or 1972 (date based on the fact that the stamps on the envelope are decimal currency and Tom died in 1972) someone mailed to T. Naisby, Esq at 405 Audley Range, Blackburn the hand written autobiography of Miles Nightingale (1826 – 1899.) Miles was baptized 29 Jan 1826 at St Katherine, Blackrod, Lancs. In 1893 he started a Temperance Band called the String Band of the United Methodist Free Church Knuzden and two members of the band were George William Naisby and Robert Walton. So I can make a connection between the names Nightingale, Naisby, Walton and Knuzden but not a connection between the Robert Walton in the band and Freda Walton in Pontefract. I also don’t know if any of these Nightingales, Naisbys and Waltons were related or just friends and neighbours. At some point this same autobiography was mailed to Freda Walton in Pontefract. No envelope survives from that mailing so I don’t know when she received it. My mother acquired the book on Freda’s death and now I have it. Any help would be much appreciated. I have found all the census records for Miles and his descendants and some for the Naisbys so it is help with Freda’s parents and their connection to Robert Walton, Knuzden, and the Naisbys that would be most valuable. One other possible relevant piece of information is that a John Walton was baptized at Immanuel, Oswaldtwistle on 28 Mar 1862, parents James and Luisa and their abode was Cabin End, Oswaldtwistle. Miles Nightingale lived at Cabin End in 1861 and the next street on the census sheet is Knuzden Brook. Before I kick the bucket I would like to see this autobiography in the hands of one of Miles descendants. He had ten children so it seems that somewhere a descendant must exist. I have traced some of the children and grandchildren up to 1911 and possible great, great, grandchildren Lynn, Andrea and Stephen William Nightingale, the latter born Garstand in 1970 but connections are tenuous at best and I have not been able to contact them. Happy 4th. Jane Charlottesville, VA

I worked for a British company (Micro Focus) from 1994 to 1997... some of the happiest days of my life! I was never an Anglophile before that, but after that experience I became quite enamored with the sceptred isle, and was very embarrassed when they had to give us Americans the day off with pay! This was well before I got into genealogy and history, but since then my respect has just continued to grow.
