All her male line forebears were needle makers in the hosiery industry from Leicester and Nottingham. However, I have told my friends at Findmypast that I am determined to do a Yorkshireman (or woman) for my August blog and I would appreciate a few suggestions! Perhaps not necessarily just for now but for future blogs as well. My immediate prospects are..... JOHN CRAVEN, Countryfile presenter born in Leeds. MICHAEL PALIN, my favourite Python and travel programme presenter born in Sheffield. ALAN TITCHMARSH, gardening presenter and chat show host born at Ilkley. DAVID HOCKNEY, world-famous artist born in Bradford. SIR PATRICK STEWART born at Mirfield. ALAN BENNETT born in Leeds. Would anyone like to suggest a famous Yorkshireman or woman whose ancestry they would like to see? -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." I have found an invitation for my Grandfather, Joseph Cooper of Follifoot to a Buckingham Palace Garden Party in June 1946. No one in the family knew anything about the invitation or whether he went. Would it be possible to find out whether he went? Is it likely that it would have been in the local paper or the Yorkshire Post? Anne Garrison Reading, Berkshire
hello, while arranging a TANSHELF REUNION (21st July 4pm +) I have leant that Fred TRUEMAN officially opened Ex-Servicemen's Club on Sessions House Yard (where we are holding the reunion) 1972/73 The housing estate of Tanshelf in Pontefract was all demolished 1972/73 Most of the families used the club when it was on Front Street now taken back by Dunhills, now Haribo before new one built around corner. The children went on club trips from there too. I will be checking in the Museum and Library for any info on Tanshelf, the club & if any record of Fred TRUEMAN opening the club, but wonder if anyone has any old photos or info they could share for our 40 year anniversary. Everyone welcome that used to live or visit Tanshelf, thank you, Maureen ex-Tanshelf lass lived with parents & siblings 33 Newport St

A young couple, surname Smythe, who became my friends, arrived in Toronto from Britain about 1950. With them was their adopted son, Bryce STEELE Smythe. Bryce was the born son of a young couple who were killed in the War. They were friends of my new friends who immediately took the young baby into their home and raised him as their own, they being childless. The young lad's father's name was STEELE and he was Christened in memory of his father as Bryce Steele Smythe. He was proud of his name, aware of his origin and, when introduced to others, would declare " My name is Bryce Steele Smythe " I lost touch with friends and have often wondered on what path life may have led them. And where might their son be this day, proudly announcing "I am Bryce STEELE SMYTHE. " Might one of our Listers know ? Cheers, James
Not in this case - first child arrived 15 months after the marriage And I doubt any husband would remember to put anything in a paper <<<<<< vbg>>>>> At least mine wouldn't! Anne Some more info The first London Regiment was raised in 1908 with 26 battalions, increasing to 92 battalions during the First World War, making it the largest regiment in the British Army and twice the size the Army is today. Disbanded during the 1930s, the re-formed London Regiment remains unique as each rifle company wears the cap badge of its antecedent or affiliated Regiment - Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, London Scottish and London Irish Rifles. http://www.arbeia.demon.co.uk/srs/collect/badges/infantry/desc_ba.htm# 15th London Regiment 28th London Regiment http://www.arbeia.demon.co.uk/srs/collect/badges/infantry/desc_bc.htm# Royal Naval Division Machine Gun Corps http://www.arbeia.demon.co.uk/srs/collect/badges/corps/desc_c.htm# Machine Gun Corps Bob DNA Projects I2*, ISOGG new I2b, I2c HG & Tyler Surname and ISOGG YTree A Fair Deal for Members of the Defence and Ex Service Community.

Hi Carolyn A few observations if I may Apart from the obvious fact that Yorkshire is much larger (over four times larger than Berkshire) than any other County and therefore it is likely that there are proportionately more subscribers to Yorksgen than Berks list Berkshire has its own difficulties regarding access to Parish records, as you say very little online at all You have posted once to the Berkshire list less than two days ago, so a little patience is in order perhaps :-) although see below The one post to Berks list has a rather bland subject line "New member" and does not appear to ask a question, except is anyone else researching the same names, that rarely works on any list , so I am not overly surprised you have had no replies There are no posts by you to any other list, Gloucestershire or other than Yorkshire (did you post to the wrong address perhaps?) So perhaps you might try reposting to Berkshire (and posting to Gloucestershire) and give your post a more interesting subject line, and rephrase your post to include a more direct question (such as a lookup for a Baptism say) That way you might get some response Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) PS there is no need to include your email address in your post as its in every post you make anyway PPS why unsubscribe from Yorksgen? I am on over 50 lists and the traffic is so little these days its hardly noticeable much less hard to handle On 06/07/2012 00:16, Darryl Wilson wrote: > Hello All, > > Prompted to try to research all my family by this great and helpful > List, I am temporarily unsuscribing to research my maternal > grandmother's ancestors in the above 2 places. > > I have joined 2 relevant lists and wrote an introductory email but > there was nothing like the welcomes people on this list receive. Hello All, Prompted to try to research all my family by this great and helpful List, I am temporarily unsuscribing to research my maternal grandmother's ancestors in the above 2 places. I have joined 2 relevant lists and wrote an introductory email but there was nothing like the welcomes people on this list receive. I am finding that we are so fortunate in Yorkshite with all the Parish records we have available to us, as Glos and Berks have very little on ancestry. I shan't immediately unsuscribe since someone on this list may have some pointers and advice for me. In just over a month I've managed to get back to my 3 x Great Grandparents but am a little stymied from there on. So I'm back to 1752 but even the IGI doesn't seem to have any pointers from then back. A relative whose Great Great Grandfather is the same as mine has already contacted me through ancestry. I'll put my email address at the end of this email in case there's a post about my husband's Yorkshire ancestors in the new few months. Meanwhile, special thanks to Dawn Gitlin for that delicious Anzac biscuit recipe and to the lovely email friends I've made on this list. Surnames in West Yorkshire are: BATTY, BROWN and FRETWELL. Surnames in Gloucestershire are: ELLIS (so far only direct line.) Surnames in Berkshire are: YORK, DYER and KIBBLEWHITE. Best wishes to all and happy hunting and helping each other. Thank you to everyone for their prompt and knowledgeable replies. I was going to investigate medals next and you have answered that question for me already, I might be able to get his service records as I don’t think that there are any closer relatives left other than my Father who was his brother in law. Thank you again Anne Garrison
Hi Elaine Although he would certainly be entitled to them there are no WW2 medal rolls available online as far as I know Post 1921 service records which would also state the regiment or regiments are still closed and released only to the next of kin or with their permission and can take quite a time to get (and cost about £30) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 05/07/2012 13:18, trayford@rogers.com wrote: > Hi Nivard, > > Are WW2 Medals listed anywhere he may have been entitled to one. > > Regards. > Elaine Pickard > Sheffield Indexers Site Admin. > www.sheffieldindexers.com
