    3. I suggest you get some of your water authorities to proclaim a drought. This happened here towards the end of March and it seems to have rained ever since. The main disadvantage for us is that it also has brought out myriads of slugs. I wonder if our ancestors had the same problem! 3. Just noticed on BBC Four tonight 8pm to 9pm and probably on BBC I player if you miss it: Roundhead or Cavalier An investigation into whether the divisions created during the English Civil War in the 17th century are still evident in modern British society. The programme explores how the Royalists and Parliamentarians' differing attitudes to democracy, monarchy and individuality influenced the lives of Britons for centuries afterwards, and features contributions by Julian Fellowes, AS Byatt, Philippa Gregory and Ann Widdecombe. Maybe some truth in the naming patterns - though as time went on it may be they just used the Royalist/Parliamentarian name because it was passed down through the family? eg I have a Charles in my family who was a non conformist 1793-1846 so guess he wasn't particularly fond of the monarchy. York Castle museum has (or did have) a wonderful exhibit about a man who fought in the Civil War - he was the son of a wealthy merchant in Cambridge (I think - while since I've seen it) who went to University, but then converted to the wrong religion and his father stopped his allowance. He came to York and set up as a publican but went off to fight (probably for the Parliamentarians) and his diary describes floundering around in mud. I remember one entry he talked about how some of his soldier pals came to the pub and they spent the night talking about all their exploits, boasting and bragging and after they'd all gone his wife said to him 'you don't know how many nights I've sat here worried about you' and he recorded he felt very ashamed of himself. Jane Still chasing Robert W(h)eldrake (any likely spelling considered) who married Susanna ? and turned up in Birstall, near Huddersfield in 1708! Anyone fancy a challenge in tracking him down?! -----Original Message----- From: Margaret Cambridge Sent: Saturday, July 14, 2012 7:45 PM To: yorksgen-l@rootsweb.com Subject: [YORKSGEN] Royalist Question This might sound stupid to many of you but I'll just throw it out there. It seems to me if a family tended to name their children Charles, William, Edward, Elizabeth, Mary, etc., they were likely to have been Royalists and those that used Jeremiah, Matthew, etc., probably would have been Puritans or Parliamentarians. Was this generally true? I've been wondering what their lives may have been like mid 1600's depending on what side they took yet how can you know for sure. Any thoughts appreciated. 3. My Dad used to beat the batter, then let it stand for a while, then beat it again, and repeated this a couple of times. They were always really light and mouth-watering. Guess they were helped by all that extra air he beat into them - or maybe they were just scared he'd beat them again if they didn't perform :-) Would also like to pass my best wishes to all the lucky people attending Yorksgen for the next couple of weeks. I will never forget my time there in 2010 and will definitely be back at the first opportunity. Enjoy all the resources, trips, outings, and fellow researchers. 3. P.S. Pls send some of your rain over here we need it. Tricia My arrival at Ottawa was greeted by a thunderstorm. I was met by a cousin. It was our first ever meeting. Her ancestor, Christopher Ford, left Bridlington in 1823. His sister Rachel is my 3 x great grandmother. I stayed with my cousin. who loves in Portland, for the next few days and all I got was rain with low temps. It was too wet and cold to go anywhere. We spent the time discussing our family. This is not helped by her not having any family tree software but she had hard copies. I left her to drive round the country with the idea of spending the last few days with her and seeing the sights she wanted to show me. When I got back to her home...it rained and rained! So we never saw the sights but did visit a few cemeteries at Williamsburg, South Gower and Morewood. Guess I better visit again bringing the rain with me so your wish will be granted! Victor

    1. [YORKSGEN] Royalist Question
    2. Margaret Cambridge
    3. I think that is true Chris as they tend to use Saints names. It's possible if the reigning monarch was Catholic then the Catholic people would lean toward Royalism........but if the monarch decided to break away from Rome then what. So maybe a christian name had nothing to do with your choice it would be dependant on religion. For some reason I'm having a hard time sorting this out in my head. Marg >From the Beautiful British Columbia Cariboo Region, Canada ----- Original Message ----- From: CHRISTINE WILLOTT Years ago i read an article in a FH magazine saying that names like Stephen, Francis and Thomas indicated a possible catholic family. My girlfriend from Yorkshire even gave them to her husband he did not seem to notice the difference. Remember years ago we had quite a discussion on this topic. Best regards Tricia Backhouse. P.S.
