If I may point it out, you are making a mistake in assuming that because the marriage took place in Pontefract RD it must have been at Pontefract itself. Not necessarily so! If you click on the underlined blue link of Pontefract at FreeBMD it takes you to another screen from which by clicking on yet another link - the word "here" - you will get a long list of all the sub-districts, places and parishes that were in the Pontefract registration district. The marriage could have been in any of these places and some of them may lie midway between Pontefract and Doncaster. You would have to study a map closely to see where the possibilities could be. I would start by assuming the marriage was in the bride's parish (though this is by no means always the case) and then study the 1911 census and see if you can find a Mary Helm who might fit the bill, since her is the more uncommon of the two names. Failing that, you could always buy the certificate! -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Famous family trees blog: http://blog.findmypast.co.uk/tag/roy-stockdill/ "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." Hi Chris,           There was I thinking the list was quiet because you were all working hard after all the "High Teas" and "Fish and Chips" (sorry the envy is showing!) but you are just trying to make us work.        All my families are quite small but Dave's gt. grandparents Samuel & Mary Ann Hamlet, in Lancashire (not far from the Yorks border Mary Ann was born in Yorks ) had 13 children, between 1872 & 1898.   There were 7 girls and 6 boys - 11 surviving to adulthood.   He was a House Painter in 1911 but had built some houses earlier, one of which he lived in.  The house had 3 bedrooms, no bathroom and an outside toilet, he didn't think bathrooms and toilets should be inside the house.   The house was there in 2003 and is probably still standing.         William Hamlet kept hens in the back garden and the story is that he charged his wife for the eggs!   Lorna Kay (In sunny, but cold NZ)

Nevertheless, Rebecca nee Hindle was the first wife of my gt grandfather, Benjamin Town. They married on July 15 1828 and then produced 30 children, all recorded in batches on a memorial stone in Keighley Parish churchyard. Rebecca died in 1851 after which Benjamin remarried and I am descended via his second wife. Rebecca was a twin so it seems probable that there were some twin pregnancies to have produced 30 children in 13 years. David born Keighley

    3. The first Yorksgen I attended, we had a chap speaking about non conformist religions. It was an entertaining talk believe it or not, but the poignant thing I have remembered is that the infant morality rate (deaths per 1000 in the first 5 years of life) was 1:2 in the industrial areas. Victorian hymns such as 'when he cometh to make up his jewels' which I used to think were yuk were a real comfort to parents who had lost children. 3. Hi Christine and all, I have a family (who were not from Yorkshire) where there were 16 children born to one set of parents, Robert Wise and his wife Mary Ann Lucas, here in Tasmania. An even balance of 8 girls and 8 boys. But not quite satisfied with his efforts at populating Tassie Robert then married again, to Elizabeth Barratt, after he was widowed and they produced a further 12 children. With the exception of two children, who I don't have death dates for, the other 26 children all survived to adulthood. Robert was born in 1818 and his youngest child was born in 1901 so Robert was 26 when his eldest child was born and 83 years old when his last child was born. I have yet to discover an older new father ;-) Due to the wide spread of ages of the children, Robert has 5xgreat grandchildren alive today as well as grandchildren although not on the same lines of course. Bye Karlena from a chilly Tasmania, Australia. -----Original Message----- From: CHRISTINE WILLOTT Sent: Wednesday, July 25, 2012 4:24 PM To: YORKSGEN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [YORKSGEN] family size The list is rather quiet at present so on the way back from the Wakefield archives yesterday, we decided to suggest a competition. 3. Hi A relative of mine - Mary Jane Raines, was born in Burton Pidsea in 1808. She married Isaac Dunn at the age of 16 in 1824 and produced 18 children between 1825 and 1852. 7 Boys and 11 girls. They all survived to adulthood and Mary Jane lived until 1881. I don't know if it was something genetic though because Mary Jane's mother had produced 14 children although a couple of them died in infancy. Also, Mary Jane's youngest child Susanna Dunn produced 16 children of her own - tragically losing 8 in the first year of life. Closer to home, my grandmother May Seeley born in 1896 was one of 11 children - five boys and six girls - and all the girls were named after flowers; Violet, Daisy, Lily, Ivy, Rose and May. 3. Hi Roy I've only just picked this up and haven't been able to give it any significant attention yet, but after a quick peek at Ancestry's West Yorkshire PRs and census collections I think I might well have a connection on the Craven line. William Henry Craven's father was Joshua Stansfield Craven, and (shock horror!) it appears from the 1891 census that he married a Londoner. Never mind - 1861 shows him as son of another Joshua, born in Wortley (Leeds) about 1829. This Joshua appears in a tree shared with me by a fellow researcher (and not fully verified by me) as son of another Joshua, who descends from Abraham Craven and Elizabeth STANSFIELD, and then two further Abrahams. The furthest back, who was buried in Calverley in 1770, was my 6x great grandfather. He married Ann CARR (buried 1784) in 1729 - and if you can find out any more about either of their origins you're cleverer than I am. But I think this makes me something like a 7th cousin to your subject. As far as I can determine, Abraham, the possible ancestor of your subject, was the fourth child of Abraham Craven and Ann Carr, baptised 19 Feb 1736/37; my ancestor was Benjamin, their 9th and youngest child, baptised 30 Sep 1750. Benjamin, however, has his own rather more modest claim to fame: he was Parish Clerk in Calverley for 30 years (from his burial entry), but at some stage Sexton as well; the position of Sexton passed to his son James, who held it for 40 years, and then James's son Benjamin, who by 1876 had held it for another 25 - see Cudworth's "Round About Bradford" p.460. There's an outline of my tree at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~arthurk/ - use the Name Index or look at the Bartle chart (lower part) to find the Craven connection. I can supply fuller information if you wish, and I look forward to seeing the results of your endeavours.
