    1. [YORKSGEN] Yorksgen 2013 costs
    2. Sue Taylor
    3. Have done the sums on each option of accommodation at June/July 2013 costs - parking/WiFi are based on this years costs: Wentworth College Bed and Breakfast: 14 nights £686.40 Parking (Mon-Fri): 10 days £65.00 WiFi: Free Total: £751.40 (this includes Breakfast, is in a peaceful location (according to York Uni website feedback) and I assume can provide accessible accommodation) Halifax Court Accommodation only: 14 nights £319.20 Parking (Mon-Fri): 10 days £65.00 WiFi: £10 Total: £394.20 (this doesn't include Breakfast, isn't in a peaceful location and can't offer accessible accommodation) York Racecourse Bed and Breakfast: 13 nights £377.00 Parking (Mon-Fri): Free WiFi: Free Total: £377.00 (for a fair comparison 14 nights B&B would be £406) - (this includes Breakfast, can provide accessible accommodation and I assume is in a peaceful location) For non car users the costs obviously changes: Wentworth College: £686.40 (14 nights) Halifax Court: £320.20 (14 nights) York Racecourse: £377.00 (13 nights) / (14 nights £406.00) I'm more than willing to pay an extra £56.80 for 13 nights B&B in a peaceful location, in quieter accommodation (no doors banging), with accessible accommodation, which includes breakfast and with no hassle about sheet changing, changing houses etc. I am concerned about the lack of self-catering facilities, that will bump up the cost of the stay, having to eat out everyday is expensive - although to be fair we usually eat quite a few evening meals at local pubs/restaurants. Hopefully Janice can negotiate a self-catering facility for us with the Racecourse people. If my memory serves me correctly I've been attending Yorksgen since 2006 and have enjoyed each one. Where else can you spend 2 weeks indulging your passion for family history research with the support and genuine interest from other like minded people. At the end of a hard day at the Archives It's wonderful being able to share your successes/non-successes with the other Yorksgeners who are so willing to offer help, support and suggestions. Family history research can be a lonely occupation but for 2 weeks a year, at Yorksgen, it becomes a shared experience. Regards, Sue

    3. Hi List Just some general info on this theme of Yorkshire 2013. For the un-initiated the idea is that the accommodation is a base which is why Halifax Court used to fit the bill so well. Everybody's research is unique and at different stages, you only have to listen in on one of Colin's impromptu tutorials to realise this. You do your own thing, if someone's going to the same place there's lifts on offer for a share of the cost. Got a brick wall there's help on tap. There's even a chance that Sue will find her Mary! Originally there was a programme of events but as numbers lowered over the years that became impractical so now these are run as an external lecture day. Usually those staying for the full two weeks like to lighten their work load with a little playtime - fish and chips at Whitby etc. You don't even have to stay at the accommodation, if you're staying somewhere else you can come and visit, join in the suppers, day trips or just a cup of tea at supper time. Halifax Court has had a re-fit - wrong! It had a tart up. The shower was much improved, it now has internal doors but 1 shower and 2 loos for a house of 11 or 12 people is a bit much, but then again this accommodation is for students ( does that make it better or worse I wonder). The trouble is the regulars are getting older and the stairs are very steep and we were so spoiled last year with Goodricke College. Let's go to Goodricke College I hear people say - no they don't want us to have that. To be honest we came away with the distinct impression that the University didn't really care if we returned or not. I know it's almost a full year away but already there's a lot of interest and Janice hasn't even seen the accommodation yet so once she has be prepared to act quickly. Cheers Lynn A oldie Yorkshire lass in the West Midlands

    3. Hi Jeannie The choice is not between Halifax and Wentworth, but between Halifax and the Racecourse.  We are all agreed that Wentworth is too expensive and again parking is extra. The racecourse is not much more money than Halifax and is B&B. Further there are no hidden extras. To those who suggested contacting the tourist board - this is how we found the accommodation at the race course. We cannot access the York FH fair from Halifax which we can from the racecourse. Further we will be on the spot for the fair. Janice is going to inspect the rooms so we must wait and see. There are however a number of people who have said they will come is we go to the race course. I can see the problem re mobility for Halifax Court but the parking prices only adds 81 pounds for the fortnight which is just a bit dearer than one nights stay at Wentworth. The cheap accommodation at Halifax was the part that appealed to us in the Antipodes. When you already have forked out nearly $2000 to get there anything helps. You might lose some Aussies and NZers. 1. [YORKSGEN] yorksgen holiday 2012
    2. CHRISTINE WILLOTT
    3. Janice usually asks us to report to you our successes at the current holiday. Sometimes what you don't find is as important as what you do, so one of the things I did was to wade through 1/4 sessions records at Beverley to try to find my Joseph Chatterton, recusant ancestor who married in Hemingbrough in 1769. I did not find any Catholics let alone Joseph in the record book I saw.  There were an awful lot of people taken to court for not keeping up the roads which were full of potholes - what's new. So I am still looking for a clue as to the parish of Joseph's origin - or was he another Adam? Several of you followed the thread on my search for info on my great aunt Emily Lee (nee Chatterton) and were very helpful with ideas. The news of this front is very positive. I was able to meet with her granddaughter, Karolyne for the first time. We found the history of her hospital stay and were able to go to the Wakefield archives together where Karolyne read the hospital notes. She bought a photocopy which included a photo. She did not have a picture of her grandmother so this was special. Whilst Karolyne did this, I went to the deeds room and found the details of the transactions relating to the house where our g grandfather William Chatterton lived. The history of the property right back to when it was a green field was all there. Kath Webb at the Borthwick found Emily's death for us so we can get the certificate. Interestingly there was a family story of Emily lived for 40 years in a padded cell which I had dismissed as exaggeration but it turns out she was in hospital for 40 years. Unfortunately although she died in Naburn, we were not able to find her grave. She is not in Fulford cemetery where most of the Naburn burials took place. We wanted to lay some flowers. Her notes said there was an aunt with a similar health problem, so now - mission find the aunt! The 'find the aunt' mission rather took over, so I have not pursued the Kay family back any further. We think it was a Kay aunt rather than a Chatterton one, but of course a lot of people called aunty were not real aunts. As well as this - we had several visits to Bettys, a 1950s style tea party and a trip across the North York Moors on the top of a double decker bus to Whitby for fish 'n chips. Some brave souls climbed the steps to the abbey. Carol Meggit and I made our progress on the bus. We had lots of chat and lots of laughs and we learned lots (thanks Colin for being our onsite tutor). 3. I'm new to the list and know I've missed a lot, but I'm trying to figure out what conference everyone is writing about. A previous email encouraged people to read the brochure but I haven't found a link for one. I may have missed it in the numerous links that come in each digest. I quickly scanned the GENUKI homepage but didn't see anything for a conference posted there either. Sorry to take up space regarding something that everyone else already knows about. We found it to be a very pleasant experience, with lovely walks to and from our destinations. Transportation was readily available, breakfasts were included, and the other meals were available. Have never stayed near the racecourse, so can't compare - and don't know if everything is the same as when we were there, but we both decided that we would be happy to stay there again. We considered it an excellent choice, especially for the price. Have NO desire to undermine what has been suggested, but there is time before then to explore other venues, since there seem to be questions surrounding the race course location. And there is a pub nearby. I really do trust your judgement! Magdalena -- AIIC Mail - A service provided by the International Association of Conference Interpreters --- http://aiic.net <http://aiic.net%20>

    3. One time when we were in York, we stayed at Wentworth College housing. As I only stay for one week (Saturday to Saturday) I would need to stay another day if I wanted to do the Family History Fair as well. Regards Margaret Oxford

    1. [YORKSGEN] Beverley - Hearth Tax - locations
    2. Bill Webster
    3. Could I request some help, please, from anyone more familiar with Beverley and the Hearth Tax. I have been looking at http://www.hearthtax.org.uk/communities/eastriding/index.html. Can I confirm the online records are from 1672? Was this the only return or will there be more years to come? And what do the Mem Refs relate to, as in m.1, m.1d, m.2, etc.? The family name that I am researching appears in a number of Constaularies/Wards. If I can, it may prove useful to identify where each of these were. They obviously relate to quite small areas within the town. I think I can relate these to present places and roads but I would welcome correction. Saturday Market ward would be around the market, sort of north/centre. Toll Gavel ward would be south/centre. Within North Bar ward would be north of the Saturday Market. Newbegin and Lairgate ward is south and west of the market? Norwood, Hengate and Walkergate is east and north of the market? Beckside and Barleyholme ward is south and east, towards Hull? Thanks for any clarification. Bill

    3. I remember watching the movie, Saving Private Ryan, some years ago, and thought, that's very hard, but my Great-Grandmother, Emily Castle Carrick, had it even worse. (Castles of Withernsea and Owthorne, Carricks of Easington) Her mother had died when she was little and her father had gone off to Canada when she was just 12 (where he died of cancer ~ found a death record in Toronto after ages of searching) Emily and her husband, John Henry Carrick, a master carpenter of Easington, had seven sons and a daughter. Most of their sons were involved in the conflict then called the Great War: one lost a leg to gangrene when he was pinned down with his dead buddy in a trench (I believe, in Belgium) and his toe became infected (had to drink his own waste liquid to survive) ~ he was a favorite of my Hull-born mother who remembered watching him strap on his wooden leg; another died during the worst days of the fighting at Passchendaele, Ypres in October, 1917 ~ a nightmare scene from the looks of photos of that war theatre; another sustained a head injury that necessitated a metal plate attached to his skull to protect his brain ~ he had terrible headaches. My grandfather fared better as did the other boys. I have often reflected how terrible it must have been to have sons at that time. I have one son and a son-in-law who went to Iraq and Afghanistan, but to have seven sons! Looking back over my ancestors families, 12 seems pretty much the norm in family size. Monty Python's Yorkshire skit on the prolific nature of the people seems to have had some truth in it, but I don't know.
