    1. [YORKSGEN] Hull Industrial School

    3. I have an extract from a newspaper, The Hull Packet & East Riding Times, dated 9 Feb 1866 which gives me the following info: Hannah Mary SILVERWOOD, age abt 11, was brought up on remand charged with stealing sixpence, the property of her mother. She was to be sent to the Hull Industrial School until she attained the age of 15, & the mother to pay towards her maintenance. I seem to remember that this was one way of getting your child an education. Whether this was the case here I don't know. My problem is that apart from this article, and her birth in Hull in 1854, I know nothing about this child. I have been unable to find an 1871 or later census entry, a marriage or a death. She had two sisters and I have a birth certificate for one of the sisters Elizabeth, which gives her mother as Jane SILVERWOOD formerly NORMANDALE but again there is no marriage entry. The father on that birth certificate is Robert SILVERWOOD. In the 1861 census he was in gaol and in the 1871 census he is describing himself as single (he died a few months later) and I can find nothing about Jane and her three daughters although there is the possibility that Elizabeth died. Are there any records for the Industrial School. I have tried googling but they all seem to be for boys and/or much later. And if anyone can suggest anything I would be most grateful Regards Denise

Hi Steve The same thing happened to me using the Cornwall Library service to access the 19th Century Newspapers , like you all I got was Newsvault and the Times, whereas I usually have the 19th Century Papers as well Luckily as I use the 19th Century papers more than anything else I had bookmarked them and that still worked for me I emailed our library service who had already noticed and asked Cengage last week, they replied to say that Cengage say there is a fault and the correct link should be reinstated at some point Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 13/08/2012 19:24, steve whitwam wrote: > Can anyone advise me about the gale newspaper collection web site which I access using my kirklees library card. > > I've been using this for quite a while, but when I log into the site now I only get the "NewsVault" option and not the newspaper search where you can select a chosen paper. > > Is anyone else having problems with the site ? > > Regards > > Steve Whitwam > Golcar, Huddersfield

    3. Roy and others Using your Lancashire library card access the newspaper database as you usually do. At the very top of the page there is a blue bar with "Preferences" "Change Databases" "Log Out" Click on " Change Databases". You will now see at the top Newsvault (with 17th and 18th century Burney Collection and The Time Digital Archive underneath). Click on Newsvault which brings up the new search platform which you can manipulate to your heart's content. For some strange reason inputting "Stockdill" only comes up with 3 hits. But if you do an Advanced Search putting Stockdill + Entire Document there are 85 hits. Lin PLEASE REMOVE NAMES & email ADDRESSES BEFORE FORWARDING. 3. Hi Steve I used the Kirklees facility this weekend and noticed the search was different but I found it a little easier to use. A successful result quickly came up - it was the Huddersfield Chronicle in 1852 - which I thought OK. My concern has been that the Huddersfield Examiner does not seem to be included - back to twiddling films in the library for that.   Regards Roger Family History Research: GILL, BERRY, CHARLESWORTH, ROBINSON and many others in the Holme Valley, south of Huddersfield. http://rogergill.me.uk > > Can anyone advise me about the gale newspaper collection web site which I access > using my kirklees library card. > > I've been using this for quite a while, but when I log into the site now I > only get the "NewsVault" option and not the newspaper search where you > can select a chosen paper. > > Is anyone else having problems with the site ? > > Regards > > Steve Whitwam > Golcar, Huddersfield > http://www.whitwam.co.uk > > The web site for those tracing their ancestors from the Colne Valley, > Huddersfield >

    3. Not sure if this will help, but I have just accessed the Gale collection through Lancashire Libraries online. There were originally two options - the Burney Collection and Times Digital Archive. There is now a third - Newsvault - a new search platform. In the list of leases for a particular property the lease states 'for 11 years' but almost all the renewals (over a two hundred year period) are dated 5 years later, rather than 11 years later. Why is this? 2. Some of the properties that the Archbishop acquired from other parties (the Crown for example) were already encumbered with leases for a term of years, so the marginal note says that the only income the AB can expect from these properties until the lease expires is the 'Reserved Rent'. What is the definition here of 'Reserved Rent'? 3. Some rents were payable on the usual Lady Day and/or Michaelmas, but others were payable on Plow-day. Anyone know when 'Plow-day' was? 3. Many thanks for the responses. The Greater Oxford dictionary confirmed, as many listers suggested, that Plow-Day = Plough-Monday, = the first Monday after Epiphany (the 6th Jan), and was the day on which the new Agricultural Year started after the holidays. I have since discovered that the practice of the ecclesiastics in York was to charge low rents but high entry fees (fines), which boosted their income if a tenancy was cut short by death or any other reason. Still haven't found why 11-year leases were routinely renewed after 5 years though. Colin

    1. [YORKSGEN] Yorkshire's Olympics glory!
    2. With only a few events left, today's Mail on Sunday has published on the centre pages of its Olympics special pull-out supplement a definitive league table with the following headline: "So Yorkshire really is the county of champions: If it was a country it would have beaten the likes of Spain, South Africa and Brazil...and that's without all the medallists they tried to poach from other counties". While pointing out that Yorkshire has attempted to claim athletes who were born elsewhere but brought up or live in Yorkshire, the paper has Yorkshire right at the top of a county table showing where all Team GB's medallists come from in birth terms. Yorkshire has five gold medals, 1 silver and 2 bronzes, followed by London (NOT actually a county) with 4 golds, 6 silver and 6 bronzes, with Lancashire third with 3 golds no silver and 1 bronze. The Mail writer, one Nick Harris, however, has the gall to say "OK London is not a county but then neither is Yorkshire any more". I look forward to him receiving a flurry of e-mails from all three shires pointing out that, whatever the clowns in Whitehall may have decided in 1974, the traditional, historic county of Yorkshire still is most definitely a county, whereas London was always traditionally divided between Middlesex, Surrey, Kent and Essex! The Mail table shows that if Yorkshire had competed as a separate country we would be 15th overall, just behind New Zealand but ahead of sporting giants Spain, South Africa and Brazil. Here are the gold medals won by Yorkshire-born Olympians.....
