Hello all..... My paternal grandmother, Floss Haviland, was born illegitimately in Bewerley, 13th December, 1895. Her mother, Catherine, was a teacher at Glasshouses school until she resigned at Christmas of that year. Does anyone know if the school log-books for this period survive? I realise that the chances of discovering the identity of Floss's father are remote but I wonder if the log-book might give a reference to any scandal. Thank you Brian Curtis
Hello Listers, I would like to join you in expressing my gratitude to Janice for the great work she has done for the list. Who would think that it is actually over eleven years since Janice took over as List Administrator. It seems like only yesterday. I feel very privileged to be taking over the administration of Yorksgen and can only hope that I will be half as successful in keeping Yorksgen a vibrant, friendly and helpful forum for the benefit of all members. Thank you to all of you who have already sent me your good wishes and messages of support. They are really appreciated. Sara McGinlay Yorksgen List Administrator _____ No virus found in this message. Dear past and present List Administrators, Janice, you have earned your retirement as without all your care - and compassion! - Yorksgen would never have continued to develop as the friendly, welcome and helpful gen list it has become. Sara, congratulations on your promotion from humble member and welcome! I am certain you will do a brilliant job. If there is anything I can ever do, aside from not taking quite so long to file updates for the Yorkshire Surnames List, please let me know. Asquith was published as follows: Edward J. Davies, “The Ancestry of Herbert Henry Asquith”, *Genealogists’ Magazine*, 30(2010-12):471-79 A summary of the ancestry is below. Much greater detail and discussion are given in the article. 10 Joseph Dixon (1770-1828) of Morley, clothier 11 Sarah Roberts
Hi Listers I am currently pursuing the theory that both myself and the former Liberal Prime Minister have a common ancestor but have encountered a stumbling block and wondered if anyone can help me unblock it please. HH Asquith's father was Joseph Dixon Asquith and his grandmother was Esther Asquith nee Dixon. Esther was born 15th May and baptised 9th June 1794, the daughter of Joseph & Sarah Dixon - a non-conformist baptism at Morley New Chapel. The stumbling block is that there are two possible marriages for her parents and I cannot see how to differentiate between them, neither being non-conformist. The marriages in question are as follows:- Joseph Dixon and Sarah Brook, both of the parish, were married by banns on 16th May 1790 at Batley All Saints Joseph Dixon and Sarah Roberts, both of the parish, were married by banns on 26th October 1791 at Batley All Saints I have looked at both parish register entries and apart from establishing that these were different Josephs as one wrote his name and the other left his mark there was nothing to assist. Both marriages were in the presence of a John Dixon. If anyone can assist I would be delighted to hear from them. Kind Regards Howard Mais

See:http://family-tree.co.uk/2014/10/family-tree-magazine-november-2014-30th-bir thday-issue/ for details. I am especially pleased to report that I am in it with a five-page article entitled "Labelled a lunatic", which focuses on some of the bizarre reasons why people were incarcerated and locked away in Victorian times, often because they were a source of shame and embarrassment to their family. The asylum in question, whose records and admissions registers I found online, was the South Yorkshire Lunatic Asylum in Sheffield, which opened in 1872 and went through various name changes, eventually becoming the Middlewood Hospital. I relate in the article (pages 65-69) how I discovered that the great great great grandfather of Sheffield's Hollywood film star Sean Bean, one Joseph Bean, had been admitted to the asylum in 1879 following bankruptcy and the death of his wife. Joseph died in the asylum in 1882. Discovering this event prompted me to investigate and research further and I discovered the admission registers from 1872-1910 are online at the Sheffield Archives as a series of PDFs. Can you search Ancestry by address/location rather than by name? I seem to remember that you can, however I have never tried until recently. I can't find anything about it in ancestry help. My Grandmothers photo album shows a house in Lidget(t) Park Avenue, Leeds where I think that she was employed to look after the children, I have the first names of 2 of the children but no surname. By the time of the 1911 census she was in Sheffield training to be a nurse so I can't track them down in that way. Anne Garrison Reading, Berkshire
