Hello everyone I have received the first world war officers' service records for my great uncle James Gordon WOOD (1888-1974) and who for much of his life lived in or around Harrogate. These records indicate that he attended Bilton Grange School there. I have done the usual google type search for the school but this only comes up with the modern county primary school of the same name. Does anyone know of the old school or where I might find details of it and its alumni? Peter In the Isle of Man

Part of my sister in law's family came from Newhurst, a few miles North of Bolton by Bowland. Something got them wondering what side they would have supported during the Civil War, obviously impossible to know but I wonder if the Bolton by Bowland area was predominantly on one side. Rather than ordering a marriage bond through the Borthwick Institute, would anyone know if it is possible to order microfilm from the LDS for this information? Thank you. Kelly

The records of the East India Company, pertaining to the Middle East have now been digitised, funded by the Qatari government. If you had relatives in the East India Company, or who travelled on their ships through the Middle East and on to India and beyond, then this could be a lucky dip for you. http://www.qdl.qa/en Colin --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Thank you so much for this, Colin. My COBB ancestor managed to survive and thrive in the colony of Jamestown, Virginia, when so many others perished, and I always thought that perhaps it was because he was related to the Robert COBB who was a charter member of the East India Company, but who died before the charter of Jamestown in 1607. Is there any chance that the reference might be to Thomas Beckwith, 1731 - 1786 ? It was the sort of thing he did. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Beckwith Nancy. Hello, Colin, Have you inquired about the book at any university libraries? It seems to me a good reference librarian could possibly help you in your quest -- preferably one with subject expertise in the history of church decoration in Yorkshire, or similar topics, in rare books. Failing that, you could try posting your query on STUMPERS-L (I think it still exists)--a mailing list used by professional librarians in the past to seek colloquial input on difficult reference questions. Good luck! I am not so much interested the del Hay family (well, I am, but not in this instance), it is the stained glass showing coats of arms in various churches that interests me. I have Glover's Visitation of 1584/5, published in 1873, which describes the arms in the windows of many churches in the East Riding (but not Bubwith or Eastrington which the lady refers to), but I was unaware of a much earlier book. So it is specifically that book that I am trying to track down. I did quite a bit of Googling before I posted my question in the group, but without success. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/GEN-MEDIEVAL/2005-09/1127381595 Hi Colin I don't know about the book - unless you tried Google books and searched through that but putting arms of the del la Hays brings up a lot of info on Rootsweb (and I didn't know they had a medieval section either!) http://soc.genealogy.medieval.narkive.com/lFZlFDDK/thomas-de-la-hay-of-spaldington-his-wives-was-re-pcc-wills-progress or this which refers to a book - Wills of Yorkshire if I read the Latin right? Maybe coming at it from a different angle might solve the problem?
