    1. [YORKSGEN] ww2 records
    2. CHRISTINE WILLOTT via
    3. Hi all, This is not Yorkshire, but you may be able to help. I seem to remember that although there was no census in 1941, there was a record taken for ID purposes and to guide conscription possibly in the late 30s. Can anyone remember what this count was called and does anyone know where to access the info if it is available? Is it at the NRA? We are struggling to find the WW2 men on the local war memorial. Any ideas of where to look would be appreciated. When the families disappear from the electoral role when they move - where do you look? Freebmd is incomplete and only goes as far as the 1980s. The parish records are available on Ancestry but are not proving helpful. I have yet to try the local media. The school admission records have been checked and not all of the men went to school locally. Next year is the 70th anniversary of the end of WW2. We had a packed house again at the remembrance Sunday service this morning with many of the WW1 families we have traced coming. Many thanks Chris

    3. Hi List I am trying to trace a family called Goddard. I have traced back to 1841 through the census having come from Stainbrough near to Barnsley in Yorkshire.. The 41 census has a John Goddard, who was born in 1801, but as you know on the 1841 just says the County of birth. I feel sure they may have still been in Stainbrough prior to 1841. Any help would be appreciated Many thanks Regards John Lindley

    1. [YORKSGEN] Filmed and Not Forgotten
    2. JANICE WOOD via
    3. Hello all, This Sunday - worth a visit: Filmed and Not Forgotten - a special screening to mark the centenary year of the First World War, on Sunday 9th November at 2pm, at the National Centre for Early Music, in York. 'Filmed and Not Forgotten' is a Yorkshire Film Archive programme focussing on a collection of films made in communities across Yorkshire during the years of the First World War. The event will be presented by specialist curator, Martin Watts. A moving story of the people who were fleetingly captured on film, one hundred years ago, and whose stories are being re-told today. Tickets are £5 (five pounds) and can be purchased on the door or from www.asff.co.uk/tickets/#special.  50% of ticket sales will be donated to the Royal British Legion. See www.filmedandnotforgotten.com where some sample footage can be viewed. I was at a presentation by the Yorkshire Film Archive (www.yorkshirefilmarchive.com) where some of these film clips were shown. The archive hopes, eventually, to make thousands of films available - FREE - on their website. Meanwhile, there are several there to see. Janice Wood

Hames, Elsie Saturday, 25 Oct 2014 Comox Valley Record Courtenay Elsie Hames - April 29th, 1915 - October 25th, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful Mom Elsie Hames; beloved Nana, Great & Great Great Grandma and a dear friend to many. Elsie passed away peacefully on October 25, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Hospital TCU, Comox, B.C. Elsie is predeceased by her husband Harold and son Lawrence, son-in-law David (Sonny) Jones, parents Sydney & Edith, siblings Lawrence, Winifred, Arthur, William, Betty, Harold, Stanley & Eric. She is survived by her sister Norma, daughter Betty-Lou, son Ronald (Debra), Kenneth (Susan); Grandchildren Cheryl , Corinne, Kari, Kevin, Erin & Ashley; Great Grandchildren, Amanda, Selena, Sarah, Jayden, Austin & Logan; Great Great Granddaughter Taylor. Elsie was born in Grateayton England and came to the Comox Valley in 1920 with her parents Sydney & Edith, they built a farm in Dove Creek where they raised their children. Elsie married the love of her life Harold on November 30, 1937 and they made Courtenay their home. Mom & Dad celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1997 at the Courtney Fish & Game with their many family & friends. Elsie had so many interests, she loved to camp and travel but her true passion was the Fraternal Order of Eagles to which she threw her heart and soul into since she became a member in 1952. On August 21, 2012 the Campbell River Eagles Ladies Auxiliary held a dinner & special recognition was given to Elsie who had been a charter member for 60 years, she had accumulated 7 past president pins and was so very proud of each and every one. The most important part of Mom’s life was her Grandchildren & Great Grandchildren, she cherished every visit and every phone call, and she even got to face time the great grandchildren back in Saskatchewan. She was blessed to have had the opportunity to know her Great Great Granddaughter Taylor and loved their visits together. The family gives special thanks to Dr. Winter & Weins for all of the care and the compassion that you showed Mom over the last few years, you’re patience & understanding will never be forgotten. Also special thanks to the entire staff at Comox Valley Seniors Village, you are all amazing, thank you for making a difference in not only Mom’s life but to her children as well. To the staff at the TCU ward at St. Joseph’s, although Mom was not in your care for long, thank you for your kindness and support during her last few weeks. A celebration of life will be held on November 10th at 1:00 pm at Piercy’s Mt. Washington Funeral Home, 440 England Ave. Courtenay, BC , tea to follow. No relation, passed for list info only. Apologies for the delay, in part caused by the fact we are still waiting on the bank for the new account details. Dear all, At last we are able to give you info on the Yorksgen holiday. The dates are 13 nights from Saturday 1st August to Friday 14th August 2015. We are booked in at the Racecourse Centre in York. This offers 4 star hostel accommodation. We will be in the Annexe (See the url.) This offers single rooms, with shared facilities, which are available for £35 per night pp for B&B. There are a few twin rooms at £70 per night, please consider bringing your spouse or partner as there is lots to do in York for those that do not wish to research Family History. Should these twin rooms not be taken it may be possible to arrange single occupancy of a twin room for an extra £10 per night. The B&B cost includes full English breakfast, free parking, free wireless access and usually the use of a common room with free tea, milk and kettle. In the past we have been allowed to use the race course's laundry facilities. This rate compares very favourably with other venues. For evening meals, there are 2 pubs within walking distance as well as a Chinese takeaway and a fish and chip shop. Not far up the Tadcaster road there is a large Tesco store. The common room in the main building has a microwave which can be used for heating ready meals. As far as access to archives is concerned, the number 4 bus will take you to the railway station and the Borthwick as well as to York City centre. There will be no formal programme as such. We will try to find out if any of the local FHSs have a meeting that we can attend. Usually there are experienced researchers in the group who may be able to make suggestions if you are stuck. Lynn and I do not wish to make a profit out of this, but we cannot afford to be out of pocket. We have tried to keep the outgoings to a minimum, therefore a flat rate £5 will also be required to cover admin costs. Overseas applicants are asked to pay the money transfer charges when making their payments. If coming on a long haul flight we suggest you choose to enter the UK via Manchester as there is a direct rail link from the airport to York. If you wish to come, please contact [email protected] or [email protected] for a booking form. In addition to the admin fee, a £50 non-refundable deposit will be required with the return of the form. I.e. please send £ 55. We are looking forward to meeting you all. Chris and Lynn<< The City of York and District FHS is very active and though their website doesn't seem to have the programme for next year yet, it would seem from this year's programme that they may well have a meeting in August during the term of the Yorksgen gathering. See: http://www.yorkfamilyhistory.org.uk/ The society also has a study centre available to non-members for a modest fee. I stayed at the Racecourse Centre hostel a couple of years ago, though just overnight, not on the full course, and it was excellent quality for the price - though it's usually used on race days by jockeys, so the beds may be a bit small!!! No, that was a joke folks! The nearby pubs are both good too for meals. Don't know whether I'll be able to make it next year, since I'm not sure where I'll be next August (currently commuting between my homes in Watford and Dorset), but I'm sure attendees will have a jolly good time! -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Famous family trees blog: http://blog.findmypast.co.uk/tag/roy-stockdill/ Reach For The Stars blog: roystockdillgenealogy.com "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." 2. Aliceclarke8 via
    3. At the insistence of my grandchildren I am revisiting a part of their family history which I have not looked at for some years. My late husband was the great great grandson of Maria BENTLEY and Thomas HURTLEY who were married 18th February 1833 at Linton in Craven. When last I looked at this family I was very kindly helped with many generations of the HURTLEY family but for Maria I have nothing beyond a note saying that she was the daughter of Robert BENTLEY and his wife Isabella. This latter rings true since Thomas and Maria named a daughter Isabella and there have been other isabellas since. But of the antecedents of Robert BENTLEY and even his wife's maiden name, I know nothing. I am guessing that, in that area which must have been rather remote 200 years ago, they may be in a neighbouring parish, so if anyone has any special knowledge I (and my grandchildren) would be most grateful for any help. Thank you Alice CLARKE

Predeceased by husband Leonard Richards, Elisabeth is survived by daughter Jennifer (Ludo) and grandsons Kieran and Wesley. Elisabeth applied herself vigorously to everything she undertook. After graduating from Oxford University with a BA in History in 1942, she was called up and spent the remaining war years working for British Intelligence at Bletchley Park. After the war Elisabeth spent three years in Germany working for the post-war effort, acquiring lifelong friends and a fascination for German language and literature. Immigrating to Canada in 1956, Elisabeth settled in Vancouver, a city she came to love, with her new family, and found a rewarding job in hospital administration. In 1971 she began her second academic career and obtained a BA in German from the University of London in 1975, and eventually the grand achievement of a PhD in German from UBC in 1987, at the age of 67. Some of Elisabeth's favourite pastimes were writing letters and essays, reading, listening to classical music, singing, and long walks. During her ten years in Victoria, she was a dedicated canvasser for the Salvation Army and organizer with the Girl Guides. Elisabeth supported many causes, animal welfare being one of the closest to her heart. No service by request. No relation, passed for list info only. --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Antivirus protection is active. http://www.avast.com
