Hi Dave, I hope that you will reconsider your decision. I came back to Yorksgen recently after a break of a few years and was delighted to find it still the same helpful, interesting and amusing forum. I have had my problems solved in the past and always look out to see if I can help others. I am sorry if you have had abuse but please do not give up for the opinions of the minority. pauline alden 13 swann street York YO23 1AF -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of CHRISTINE WILLOTT via Sent: 13 November 2014 10:54 To: D; [email protected] Subject: Re: [YORKSGEN] ADMINISTRATION Hi Dave, Hope you had a happy birthday. Hi folks, It is patently obvious that nobody is going to take notice of my request not to continue the debate on-list. Since taking on the admin role of Yorksgen I have been criticised several times, reported to Rootsweb, reported to my ISP for sending spam and falsely accused of pretending to be someone else and told I am not fit to be in the work position I am in. A professional researcher (R.B.) with his own company is so good at his job that he confused me with my son. I have better things to do than put up with this sort of thing so will be handing over the reins to Lin. I shall continue with my other three Yorkshire lists which follow my guidelines with no trouble at all. Good luck to Lin (she’ll need it) and all of the Yorksgen subscribers who don’t whinge and moan. Dave Jassie

Hi If you can identify where in Yorkshire, then try following the family forwards using the census. After 1911 use freebmd and the BMD records on FMP. Ancestry has electoral rolls. Some Yorkshire parish registers are on Ancestry and FMP. You can use these to come forwards. Write to the local media (newspapers and radio). They may put out an appeal for you. Also try the public members trees on Ancestry. These were methods we used in trying to trace the descendants of our local war memorial men. Hope this gives you some ideas. They were exhumed and reburied in a new cemetery at Fromelles after forensic examination and dna taken. Cemetery dedicated officially by Prince Charles and our governor genial in 2010. Our group of volunteers is looking to find relatives who match dna with the soldiers, to try to identify them. So far 144 have now been identified and we are really dealing with those who have major brick walls Most of these more difficult ones are soldiers born in UK or Ireland with no relatives in Australia. I have a Yorkshire soldier who has a major brick wall to finding his relatives and I wonder if this list is able to help. If we really put our resources together, perhaps a breakthrough may be made. I did ask about a year ago, but no breakthrough then. Now seems like a really good time. The soldier is Witton Kenworthy DALTON b 1884 Eccleshall Bierlow Yorkshire, died 20 July 1916 Fromelles His record is on the National Archives of Australia, just put his name in to read it. NAA. It identifies his immediate family. Red Cross missing and wounded , Commonwealth War Graves and Australian War Memorial all have files on him. We are looking for the dna match on the female line. so are interested in his mother's line, any female relatives who would share a female ancestor, eg mother's mother's mother's line, though all their daughters etc.. (the bonus being when you get to the living, a male donor can be suitable as he would carry the same mitochondrial dna as the soldier, its just that men dont pass this on to their children) Following the female line back: Witton's parents were: Witton DALTON and Edna TAYLOR 1850-1899 Sheffield Edna's parents: William TAYLOR (b Brussels to a merchant TAYLOR) and Edna KENWORTHY 1813-1872 of Saddleworth Edna's parents: William KENWORTHY and Sophia TAYLOR 1773-1844 Saddleworth and possible parents of Sophia, James TAYLOR and Mary, also possible or even probable these are related to Sophia TAYLOR but I haven't found the connection. I have been unable to identify any female line running close to the present from this family but would be most grateful if anyone could review what we have found to see if there are any gaps or errors. I can send a descendant report with more detail, or a dna chart to anyone who would like to help Many hands make light work. Murray, I agree with you too. After an "off topic" has been bantered back and forth for a while, bring it to a halt. I have been researching for over 20 years and I am still learning and Yes, I would love to learn how to do a family tree report in Microsoft word. And, what better place than a forum bulletin board from members who have done this and know what to do and what not to do. Firstly, don’t dare blame me for the fall off of posts. I have only been doing the job on Yorksgen for a few weeks.I admin several lists and in all the years I’ve been at the helm of them I have NOT had the criticism aimed at me like I have here The vast majority of Rootsweb mailing are not as busy as they used to be.The “garbage” at the bottom of the posts is links to FREE resources. Years ago, Yorksgen was plagued by “NON-GEN” posts. I didn’t agree with them then and I don’t now. What is the point of having a list administrator if you just want it to be “anything goes” Dave Jassie
Dave, I have been following the messages that have come through this list and even though I very seldom post I felt compelled to reply now. I forget how long I have been a member of Yorksgen, but there have been debates off and on since I've been a member and yes, I believe a couple of members unsubscribed but not the list admin. I think this is an awesome list and I, for one, have learned a lot reading the individual posts. I honestly don't feel that you have been attacked, it's just members expressing their own opinions and as far as I am concerned, I thought we are allowed to do that. I have never done a Family tree in Microsoft Word, and I would love to learn how people write up a family history using that program, but, I guess that option of learning isn't going to be allowed now. I hope you change your mind about not being the admin and just relax a bit and go with the flow to speak.........LOL. I feel the person posting was asking a genealogy related topic question and that it was totally appropriate. As for the lack of posts now, there is so much information on the internet that is readily available for people to access now and you have websites on this forum for people to access. I personally feel that this forum should be for any and all genealogy related questions whether it's asking how to find family, how to figure out who's who in the family or just asking how to write up a genealogy report using whatever program. Anyhow, if you choose to not let this post go through that's up to you, but, I don't feel I have violated any "rules" of this site by expressing my opinion. Whilst understanding the List Administrator's difficult job in finding the right balance between allowing free exchange views whilst keeping the List "on track" I tend to agree with the thoughts already posted regarding Joan's post (although Admin wasn't specific in terms of which post gave him concern). I post only rarely but often find that other people's posts are helpful without always needing to add my input. I feel it would be a shame if we became too rigid, it is surely a simple matter to make use of the Delete key if you are not interested in the subject matter. HOWEVER the final decision in such matters, on any List or Forum, will always rest with the List/Forum Owner or Admin. Hello Listers, I for one would far rather have occasional off topic posts than all the garbage that has been appearing on the bottom of the mailings lately. This list has always been known as a "question friendly list" with "knowledgeable" members, "knowledgeable" replies, and very open to debates. Who knows maybe the question on computer operation and book writing was about her YORKSHIRE relatives and history. An aside, how come posts have dropped so dramatically, from a high for the year in May of 229 to a low of 47 to date in Nov!! Is it because of a new List Administration??? Let the list members decide what they want to write about and receive. And don't give me the BS about other lists being available. We already know that, and chose YORKSGEN. Hi again, People are also friendly on mailing lists, etc. devoted to their specialist subjects, This is a forum for family history/genealogical research. We are in danger of drifting into all sorts of off-topic subjects which some subscribers would not appreciate. Therefor, please keep on topic. Hi James Thank you for answering my mail, I am running My windows 7 Home Premium and Microsoft Office XP professional which I think is 2002. Perhaps I will have to copy all my script in small sections then transfer to another file then add all my photos time consuming, .... Have you any suggestions to what program will suit this, as I don't want this trouble again. Hi, You don't say which version of MS Word or Windows you are using, but the message is clear enough (memory = RAM). 75MB is large for a MS word document in my experience and the fact that you could load a 130MB document before suggests that there are more programs running in RAM than before. Possible solutions are: 1. Remove programs from RAM (i.e. stop them loading on start-up) 2. Delete unwanted files from disk 3. Add more RAM 4. Change the way images are managed in Word, i.e. link them rather than embed them in document. Hope this helps. Good luck! For years I have used Microsoft Word Document as my way of recording my family History in the form of a Book with script and scanned pictures, and save the pictures in JPEG Format. This as been OK but for some reason when opening up my book I now get a message,....... "there is not enough memory or disk space to display or print". The file is presently 75 MB ..... I have had the same file with 130MB and had no problems. Does any one have an idea how to rectify my problem of perhaps another way to use another file system.
