    3. Hmmm, I've forgotten who said it, but I agree with the sentiment ;o) "Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools" Moderation is all things - especially moderation ;o) While the thrust of the list is obviously as per the list title, and we all tend to join multiple lists, depending on our MAIN areas of interest, it is obviously not really practical to join yet another list for every little query that may just stray from the pure Yorkshire topic. I reckon as long as the majority of the posts remain on topic, the odd diversion adds some more interest. Just my opinion, others obviously agree and disagree ;o) Cheers Neil -- Neil Houghton Albany Western Australia on 15/11/14 4:01 PM, [email protected] at [email protected] wrote: > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > > Message: 1 > Date: Fri, 14 Nov 2014 11:31:39 +0100 (CET) > From: Peter Atkinson <[email protected]> > Subject: Re: [YORKSGEN] ADMINISTRATION > To: David <[email protected]>, [email protected] > Message-ID: <[email protected]> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 > > Welcome to Lin and sorry to Dave for his resignation. > > Now can I point out to those that don't know or have forgotten, I quote! > > ''The Yorks gen mailing list ''Topic - the County of Yorkshire, England'' > For questions about this list contact the list administrator etc.'' > > I suggest do ask a none list question but pursue it off-list or find the > correct list; there are hundreds available. > > Peter

    3. Welcome to Lin and sorry to Dave for his resignation. Now can I point out to those that don't know or have forgotten, I quote! ''The Yorks gen mailing list ''Topic - the County of Yorkshire, England'' For questions about this list contact the list administrator etc.'' I suggest do ask a none list question but pursue it off-list or find the correct list; there are hundreds available. Peter ======================================== Message Received: Nov 13 2014, 11:58 AM From: "David via" Dave To: [email protected] Cc: Subject: [YORKSGEN] ADMINISTRATION Hi folks, It is patently obvious that nobody is going to take notice of my request not to continue the debate on-list. Since taking on the admin role of Yorksgen I have been criticised several times, reported to Rootsweb, reported to my ISP for sending spam and falsely accused of pretending to be someone else and told I am not fit to be in the work position I am in. A professional researcher (R.B.) with his own company is so good at his job that he confused me with my son. I have better things to do than put up with this sort of thing so will be handing over the reins to Lin. I shall continue with my other three Yorkshire lists which follow my guidelines with no trouble at all. Good luck to Lin (she’ll need it) and all of the Yorksgen subscribers who don’t whinge and moan. 1. Re: [YORKSGEN] Witton Kenworthy Dalton and DNA
    2. marg o'leary via
    3. re the DNA to identify soldiers. thank you Margaret for the question about the male side. The army requires both the Mt mitochondrial dna from the female side and the Y dna from the male side, as each on its own may not be sufficiently definitive. It is not a straight yes or no answer, it is on multiple scores and a low score may be by chance, while the same score on both, may be more definitive. It is obviously quite complex. When they first started doing the testing after 2008, the family were allowed two donors of each, now only one test of each is allowed. In the case of Witton, the Y male side DNA has been done, but no result was gained, so the Mt side is very important. We try to get as close to the soldier as possible, eg a second cousin is better than a third cousin. And no matter how careful we may be, there will always be reasons why someone from the correct line may not be carrying the dna. this may be more possible with the male line where the chance of a father not being the biological father is perhaps a little higher. We have had several soldiers who were illegitimate, and have gone with the putative father if no other possibility eg a man mentioned in the court cases newspaper report being sued for support of a child, or mentioned as not accepting responsibility for a child living on the streets. Recently in two cases I was researching, feeling very pleased to have found a living relative – potential donor - I was told that their parent was adopted, and the adoptee was of an age group where certain generations were not told they were adopted, so felt very grateful that they knew. In another case a rather reticent gent who had agreed to be the donor for the mt line coming down from his mother’s mother’s line , eventually contacted me and told me he was feeling very uncomfortable, and on teasing it out, it was because he knew that his grandparents had both committed bigamy, big family secret......, and perhaps he came from the wrong side. He was actually quite delighted when I told him that it didnt matter if the traditional milkman was involved (Father Ted – great episode) the mother’s line was all we needed in that case. . The army organises the testing which is all completely coded and private and only the lab knows the answers. Each donor is checked against all the 250 dna they have. We have one family where two brothers died at Fromelles the same day. If the dna matches, they will need to use all their other forensic evidence to make the decision, height, dental, type of wound etc.. In the s=case of Witton we are finding we need to go back in time to find that important line so are grateful for any help your list can offer. On the other hand – if we do find that line, we will need a lot of help in finding the potential donor, as we will have gone though perhaps six surnames back into the past and then might go through another ten coming down to the present. and keep finger crossed that we wont be looking for a SMITH.. We do follow electoral rolls and phone books as well as traditional web sites. Always grateful for good ideas about sources. Also grateful for anyone who wants to help, as this is just one of many. We welcome experienced searchers to join our group. We have quite a few where we have tracked a family to the 1940s, but just cant find them after that. I hope this helps to clarify, happy to answer any questions. Marg O’Leary Fromelles Association. I can see that apparently Witton’s brother Basil had no children, but their father had several Dalton brothers. Margaret Oxford England.

    1. [YORKSGEN] {Spam?} WW1 soldier, Witton Kenworthy DALTON
    2. marg o'leary via
    3. Hi all I am a volunteer researcher for the Fromelles Project (you can google it) Looking for family of soldiers who died WW1 on 19 or 20 July battle of Fromelles in 2008 a mass grave was found with 250 Australian soldiers buried by the Germans after the battle.. They were exhumed and reburied in a new cemetery at Fromelles after forensic examination and dna taken. Cemetery dedicated officially by Prince Charles and our governor genial in 2010. Our group of volunteers is looking to find relatives who match dna with the soldiers, to try to identify them. So far 144 have now been identified and we are really dealing with those who have major brick walls Most of these more difficult ones are soldiers born in UK or Ireland with no relatives in Australia. I have a Yorkshire soldier who has a major brick wall to finding his relatives and I wonder if this list is able to help. If we really put our resources together, perhaps a breakthrough may be made. I did ask about a year ago, but no breakthrough then. Now seems like a really good time. The soldier is Witton Kenworthy DALTON b 1884 Eccleshall Bierlow Yorkshire, died 20 July 1916 Fromelles His record is on the National Archives of Australia, just put his name in to read it. NAA. It identifies his immediate family. Red Cross missing and wounded , Commonwealth War Graves and Australian War Memorial all have files on him. We are looking for the dna match on the female line. so are interested in his mother's line, any female relatives who would share a female ancestor, eg mother's mother's mother's line, though all their daughters etc.. (the bonus being when you get to the living, a male donor can be suitable as he would carry the same mitochondrial dna as the soldier, its just that men dont pass this on to their children) Following the female line back: Witton's parents were: Witton DALTON and Edna TAYLOR 1850-1899 Sheffield Edna's parents: William TAYLOR (b Brussels to a merchant TAYLOR) and Edna KENWORTHY 1813-1872 of Saddleworth Edna's parents: William KENWORTHY and Sophia TAYLOR 1773-1844 Saddleworth and possible parents of Sophia, James TAYLOR and Mary, also possible or even probable these are related to Sophia TAYLOR but I haven't found the connection. I have been unable to identify any female line running close to the present from this family but would be most grateful if anyone could review what we have found to see if there are any gaps or errors. I can send a descendant report with more detail, or a dna chart to anyone who would like to help Many hands make light work. Looking forward to any support or ideas please Marg O'Leary Fromelles Association. -----Original Message----- From: Caroline Gaden via Sent: Thursday, November 13, 2014 1:46 PM To: Yorksgen Subject: [YORKSGEN] WW1 soldiers: George Sanderson and William Spaven fromMalton, Yorkshire https://www.aif.adfa.edu.au/search This is the sort of extra info you get if you follow up a specific name. 3. I think there have been occasional messages on various lists about wartime munitions factories of various sorts because of family members working in them. English Heritage have made this excellent book available for free download. It has a lot of information on the various types of manufacturing and a comprehensive gazetteer at the back of the book. 1. [YORKSGEN] ADMINISTRATION
    2. Lin via
    3. Dear fellow listers. Following Dave's resignation as List Administrator I have taken over the role. I thought it opportune to tell you a little about myself. I have lived in Yorkshire all my life and have been researching my family for nearly 40 years. I have been a member of Yorksgen for many years and no doubt some of you will be familiar with my name. I have found the list on the whole helpful, informative and have made many friends through it. Lin Duke List Administrator --

    3. Hang in there please Dave, and happy birthday. I concur with Nancy. I have been on this and other sites for some years and Yorksgen is by far the best. My suggestion is not to ban "off topic" posts entirely but to bring them to a halt after only a few responses. My biggest gripe is people who are vague in the subject line. I delete using that info, without reading the majority of posts. I may miss a few gems, but I also have other things to do. Time is important to me. The exception is anything sent from Roy. More please. My second gripe is those who don't identify their location. My third is punctuation and the non use of Capitals. I did however read and ponder on the one about writing up a family tree on MS Word. I think all Rootsweb sites have been effected by Facebook. A pity. 3. Hello Yorkins http://www.dva.gov.au/commems_oawg/commemorations/history_research/service_history/Documents/Research%20guide.pdf This is the web site which shows all the things you can access about your WWI soldier who fought with the Aussies....don't dismiss it just because it was an Australian unit, there were plenty of English-born enlisted.... 67 Yorkshire, 66 Lancashire, 37 from Durham, England etc and the Australian War Memorial and others on this spread sheet are very good sites. Most of my research has been WWII esp the ATA and the POWs of the Japanese but if I can help with any Australian WWI stuff, I'll give it a go... Good luck Caroline

    3. Hello Yorkins The Australian Defence Force Academy has a web site listing the Aussies who went to battle in WWI. Many of course were from England and there are 67 who I found just with the search of 'Yorkshire' in the place name.... so if you've 'lost' a lad he may have been enjoying the sun and wide open spaces Down Under before he enlisted.... and no doubt other counties will reveal their sons if you try them... https://www.aif.adfa.edu.au/search Good luck Cheers Caroline Here are the first 3 on the list and you can get more details of each one when you get his full details via his name 1112 ALLATT, Arthur Glenroe, Broom Road, Rotherham, Yorkshire, England 22nd Battalion, A Company 938 BANNING, Alec Hawthorn Terrace, Hook Road, Goole, Yorkshire, England 9th Light Horse Regiment, 5th Reinforcement 485 BODEN, George Ernest Ilkley, Yorkshire, England 18th Battalion, B Company
