    3. I have large trees on both Ancestry.com and Ancestry.co.uk. I barely use their records at all, it was mostly a place to park my trees. I don't feel that I can trust Ancestry anymore and would like to have my trees somewhere else besides just with them. Not being very tech savvy, can anyone advise me on how to get the information from Ancestry, including pictures and sources, onto something without re-typing the entire thing? Ideally, it would be without re-doing any of it, just transferring it. I was going to put it onto a thumb drive over Christmas holidays. Would that be a good idea? If so, then where to go from there? Best wishes, Lois Blackburn Massachusetts, USA

    3. Just to have my two cents worth. I use "Legacy" Deluxe which I believe cost me all of $25. That is my working tree. I then use a ged file to upload where I wish. I encourage contacts to try "Tribalpages" (free) one of the places I have `parked`my tree. Has worked for me for about 16 years. Does FTM NOT allow Ged files to be extracted.............. 3. Hi List We have unearthed a rather ordinary (not silver) fork with the following characteristics: handle upperside: stamped ROWLANDS (rather irregularly in large uppercase) handle lower side: marked (a) BI8BY NI 1941 (about the size you would expect of hallmarks and along the length of the handle) followed by (b) AM (large uppercase) with a crown above, both being across the handle and then (c ) 456974 (again along the length of the handle and again large uppercase). The crown is similar (but not identical) to the one which we have come to expect of the crown which accompanies ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’, so I imagine it is very likely WWII. Is it army issue or the like and, if so, can the original owner be traced? John Lindley NRY.

    3. I have FTM but my main tree is Family Historian. From time to time I copy FH to FTM and the only reason I do that is because in FTM all the names on my tree have a leaf against them indicating there is other information for that person. I have found this useful as it leads me directly to other sources or other peoples trees. With FTM ceasing I presume those with FTM will still be able to use it but there will never be another upgrade. It probably just means the leaves against the peoples names will disappear. Ancestry gives lots of hints against the names on peoples trees as well as sending me emails with hints and also when other people have added more details to their trees (which have names on my tree). When you log into Ancestry the hints appear on the top right of your screen. At the moment there are over 100 hints waiting for my attention but I have little time to check them out. Family Historian has a similar system to the leaf on Ancestry and that leads to, I think, Find My Past. I have turned this link off because I don't subscribe to FMP. One subscription is enough for me Victor On 09/12/2015 11:36 AM, Pontefract FHS via wrote: > Yes Ancestry do have more records than others, but I personally use FTM as > it helps to search these ever growing records. 3. I really don't see the connection More people use Ancestry for records than the online trees and are likely to continue doing so The online trees will still be on Ancestry The user will still be able to download any record they have access to on Ancestry I see no need to migrate to another program, a program that is likely to be obsolete fairly soon as all stand alone programs cease to be produced in time As to people not subscribing again or cancelling, in my experience, each time something happens and changes are made to Ancestry, Findmypast or other site, people complain and *say* they will leave or not subscribe again, but most still do as they want the records As more mobile device users use web sites the sites are going to cater for them in preference to the stand alone user, computers are selling less and smartphones/tablets are increasing We may not like it but thats progress Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 09/12/2015 11:36, Pontefract FHS wrote: > Yes Ancestry do have more records than others, but I personally use FTM > as it helps to search these ever growing records. By using their Sync process the images are already on my computer but this of course will stop. As I have a large One Name Study as one of my Ancestry trees the process of searching, downloading and manually linking images to the relevant persons will be a very long winded process and of course all my research for this study and my personal trees will have to be migrated to another family tree software and that is not always a smooth operation, as I do use other software to build my personal website and some items in FTM Gedcom export do not read correctly into other programs. I personally feel that Ancestry are going to loose many many customers, looking at the blog on this subject many are already cancelling their subscriptions. 3. So what will be the point of a subscription if you can’t link it to FTM, I know a lot of people don’t use FTM but I bought this to link to my subscription and search the records to link to me tree. Maybe they are spending lots of time and money on records and a really horrible new interface, but if they are scrapping their software, what’s the point Dear Family Tree Maker™ community, Ancestry is proud to have made a significant investment this year to bring valuable new content and records to the Ancestry site. In 2015, we’ve made 220 million searchable historical records from Mexico available, more than 170 million pages from the largest collection of U.S. will and probate records, among others. We’ve also introduced new features such as Ancestry Academy, and major advancements for AncestryDNA. As we strive to provide our customers with the best experience possible, we are constantly evaluating our services and product offerings. True to this focus, we’ve taken a hard look at the declining desktop software market and the impact this has on being able to continue to provide new content, product enhancements and support that our users need. With that, we’ve made the tough decision to stop selling Family Tree Maker as of December 31, 2015. We will continue to support existing Family Tree Maker owners at least through January 1, 2017. During this time, all features of the software, including TreeSync™ will continue to work. Our Member Services team will also remain available to assist with questions or issues you may have. These changes are never easy. But by focusing our efforts, we can concentrate on continuing to build great products for our loyal Ancestry community. You can find additional details about the retirement of Family Tree Maker on our blog. Contact Us Online Help Please add to your address book to make sure you don't miss an email. 3. Sorry all, Yvonne and I should have shared the rest of our conversation with you. Now there are 2 main record offices. The East Yorkshire Office is in Beverley and the City has an archive in Hull. The date of this deposition is in the 19hC when there was an East Riding so the conclusion was that the deposit was in Beverley. Of course (fingers slapped) I could have looked in the online catalogue. Might be another useful source of info though. 3. Thanks for the update Margaret. I did wonder if the leaflet could be online. In the process of searching, it appears that a lot of hits from recent local Hull newspapers can be read. Also this: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/hulls-rich-history-uncovered-at-burial-gr ound. It could be worth restating from the above site: The burial ground opened in 1783 and was used by Holy Trinity Church until around 1860. Parish records reveal that up to 44,041 burials took place on the site until it was closed in 1861. 44,000 burials in shallow graves over only 80 years. You would have to be very lucky to come across an identifiable ancestor burial. We are finding people who are a Y DNA match – male line, and Mitochondrial Mt DNA for the female line as the army needs one of each for every soldier (144 out of 250 now identified) We assemble dna charts in this framework. Coincidentally I am doing a course in family history and at the recent exam it asked the question of what test you would do to find if a male and female had the same mother. the four possible answers were something like X, Y, XY AND XYZ I couldn't answer that question. what is the answer please? How important is the info to you? You could have DNA testing done if it is important. It is amazing what can be found thru the testing nowadays. We had the Y test done on a number of SHEPHERDSONs which was great. However, only males can participate on that test going thru the paternal line. Now the DNA testing includes females and its amazing what can be found. I belong to a FB group Search Squad which helps reunite adopted children and birth parents. I am totally amazed at people coming onboard with virtually NO info. After taking DNA tests, so many people have connected to unknown relations. I have ordered one for myself. Maybe.....although not holding out a big hope, I can find my Mother's Father, whoever he is. But it does depend on who has tested to help make a match. I wonder if any members can give me some ideas of where to look next - if in fact there is somewhere else to look. Due to people still being alive I have not given their correct names. The people do live in Yorkshire and all within a short distance from each other. John Smith was born in 1970 to Jane Jones and Michael Smith. Michael Smith was born in 1930 Upon growing up John Smith finds out that even though his birth certificate states his parents are Jane Jones and Michael Smith his father is in fact ? Brown, a fact acknowledged by Jane (who has now passed on). I am trying to find who ? Brown was and therefore trace the correct parentage for John Smith. I did find that within the extended family Jane Jones had a cousin Mary Black and that Mary went on to marry someone called Brian Brown. I obtained the birth certificate of Brian Brown in the hope that if I looked at his parentage and other family trees on Ancestry et al, I might find a connection. Although I was able to trace the family of Brian Brown I cannot find a brother for him, also in family trees where he occurs there is no mention of a brother or cousin having a child out of wedlock. Common sense tells me that without ? Brown's first name I have no hope of tracing him, but I thought that it was worth asking.
