Yoder Researchers, After seeing Judy's comment on "Pedigree Collapse", I thought of an article that I had just seen, and wanted to pass the address along. The article is on the Olive Tree Genealogy Page and is entitled "How many ancestors do we have?" http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ancnm.htm In my ancestry, I have a lot of "Collapse" on my Grandfather Yoder's side of the family. I tell people that I am 1/4 Amish. On the other Branches of my family, I have only a handfull of multiple ancestors. Which, when you get back 11 to 12 generations, means you are searching for a lot of surnames. I am adding a list of the surnames in my ancestry to my Genealogy page today. > > Roll call was fun - I'm amazed by people who can trace 7 or 8 lines > back to one couple. Cyndy recently posted the European ancestors of Hans and Yost Yoder, the immigrants from Steffisburg, Switzerland to the Oley Valley, Pennsylvania. From what I have, from the Yoder archives, it seems that some of her spouses were off by a generation (but the message, at my end anyway, also had some extra lines, so perhaps it was a display problem?). Here's what I have - would love any additions or corrections: -- Ulli (b.c. 1340) m. Elsi Zaugg/Zook [all European spellings are Joder] Heini (b.c.1363) m. Leni Gerber or Gither Jost (b. 1387, Steffisburg) m. Madlene Schlichter Caspar (b. Steffisburg) m. Anni Meyer Caspar m. Margret Moser or Meyer Balthasar (b. 1525, Steffisburg) m. Anna Jost or Roth Caspar (b. 1548, Steffisburg) m. (1571) Anni Moser Caspar (b. 1571) m. (1596) Margret Hennig Nicolaus (b.1609) m. (1642) Anna Trachsel Adam (b. 1650) m. (9 Jan 1671) Barbli Ochsenbein Yost (immigrant, b. 5 Oct 1679) m. (?) Are the Caspars right? Is there a missing generation (or more) between Jost (b. 1387) and Balthasar (b. 1525), or is it just a few younger sons in a row (works OK if Jost, Caspar, and Caspar were all around fifty when their sons were born, but that does bring up the likelihood of additional wives)? Have any of the "either/or" wives's names been cleared up? For wives' parents, I only show Peter Zuagg, father of Elsi; are any more known? I alos have no dates on any of the wives, but I may not have transcribed all the data in the newsletters yet (it's just such a comfortable feeling knowing it's there!). Roll call was fun - I'm amazed by people who can trace 7 or 8 lines back to one couple. So far, in Berks Co., I've only had one "pedigree collapse" - BROBST. Hi to all my Oley cousins! Ooops - I'm late for roll call - do I get demerits? I see the Oley, PA line was under-represented, so here's mine (Cyndy - hi cousin! - let's talk!!): Yost Yoder (immigrant) m. ??? Jacob Yoder (b. 1735) m. Maria KEIM (b. 1734) Johannes Yoder (b. 1763) m. Phronica EMMERICH (b. 1766) Johannes/John Yoder (b. 1794) m. Magdalena BREYFOGEL Mary Ann Yoder (b. 1838) m. David BERK/BERG (David's parents are Charles & Catherine J. ---; anyone working on the Berk name? David m. (2) Margaret RAPP) Chris, any new news on Yost's wife? Has the suggestion that she was a Kuhlwein gained or lost any credability? Judy BORTZ GURKA gurka@cs.colorado.edu

Though am I am very proud of my heritage, I can't say that I'm disappointed they left. I'm much more comfortable in front of a computer then behind the wheel of a tractor or a plow horse :) I was born in Hutchinson Ks. (not too far from the town of Yoder) and lived there for 12 years. After a couple close calls with tornadoes, many years of hot summers and cold winters, and a vacation to the west coast in `78 convinced my parents that Oregon was truly God's country. Three months later the family packed up and moved to the small Oregon town of Willamina which is about half way between Salem and the coast. I moved to the Portland area in `85 to go to school after which I got a job and never left. I was glad to read cousin Jacki's roll call and information about the origin of the town of Yoder Or. (which isn't very far from here). I cannot not count the number of times someone has asked me if I'm related to the Yoder's in that area and until now I never knew what the answer was. John Bieber > john@bartol.udel.edu > John...I think the best answer is given in the YNL 5 article by Dr. Don Yoder, the noted historian. Due to the work by Dr. Don, Hans seems well documented ...his links to Germany by will of a nephew leaving property to Hans' son Hans Jr in 1771....by the Speyer and church record showing the departure of his family to the "island of Pennsylvania"...his recoded widowhood and remarriage, etc... Yost has little documentation, but on this side of the ocean it has been long identified that Hans and Yost were brothers. Early family records documented by Bertolett in the early 1800s spoke to this relationship. This was known long before any of the European information began to be deciphered. The fact that their wills were filed together in 1742 supports this relationship. If born in 1679 and he died in 1742, Yost would have been in his early 60s...not terribly old. There is much yet to learn about Yosts family. Bertolett says he had three sons and one daughter....one of the sons isn't well established. The approximate births of his children... 1718-for Yost-Hannes; 1720- for Elizabeth, and particularly 1735 for Jacob...do seem a bit late....but Yost was known as a "frontiersman" and known to have had multiple wives.... it isn't out of line for a hearty and active 50 some year old to marry and father children... The recorded Steffisburg births of children of Hans and Yost's parents, Adam Joder and Barbli Oschenbein, extend through son Casper in 1683. They may have left about that time--I can't find them in my records there after that......and it is conceiveable that their son Jost born in Steffisburg dies and they had another of the same name at a later time...Adam was only 33 when Casper was born... I hope this helps a bit.. Chris Yoder
