    1. RE: [YELTON] Some mysteries from 1999

    3. Well, that's kind of a weird coincidence. I started working on "disconnected" Yeltons yesterday, and this message was the first place I started. And I think I managed to ID one of them anyway. That's Al Hudson's Y. F. Yelton. In fact, I haven't even tried to contact Al prior to this message because I wanted to see if I could get any further with it. In any case, I believe Y.F. Yelton is actually Oliver Yelton, son of John Washington Yelton and Eliza Nancy McCurry. Despite the difference in names, here are my reasons for this identification: 1. Oliver's family is the only Yelton family in Gold Hill, or all of Rowan County, for that matter. 2. Oliver's widow, Beuna Strider, died in 1995 at the age of 102. 3. Oliver did have children named John, Martha, and Betty. All three are still living, I think, and John at least is a fairly well-known person in Salisbury according to local newspaper articles I looked at. I can't explain the name difference at this point, but I'm sure there's some logical explanation for it. In any case, it should be easy enough to confirm it. Although not availble online as far as I know, North Carolina did have death certificates in 1948. A trip to the county courthouse in Salisbury should settle this one way or the other. According to both the 1920 and 1930 Censuses, Oliver was a mail carrier, which may be of some help in making a firm identification.
