Sharon & list, I can't claim to have solved this one, but I think I've made some progress. The mention of Phelps County, MO in one of Sharon's messages was the real clue. That means that Rebecca Yelton Grayson is most likely the child of one of two brothers, Barnet & William R. Yelton, who moved to Phelps Co after the Civil War. I found Rebecca and George D. Grayson in both the 1920 and 1930 Censuses for Phelps Co. Based on a cemetery inscription on the Phelps Co GenWeb site, I think this is George David Grayson. According to the censuses, Rebecca was born circa 1871 in North Carolina. This means she almost has to be a child of Barnet Yelton and his wife, Mary Pauline Harmon. William lived in Overton County, TN prior to moving to Missouri. Barnet, however, lived in Watauga Co, NC. If Rebecca was William's daughter, her place of birth would have been Tennessee or possibly Missouri, not North Carolina. Unfortunately, neither Barnet nor William seems to have had a daughter named Rebecca. The 1880 Census shows only three girls in Phelps County of anywhere near the right age and born in North Carolina: Mary Yelton (daughter of Barnet), Elizabeth Bryson, and Sarah Davis. Oddly, the IGI states that Mary E. Yelton, daughter of Barnet Yelton, married George Grayson circa 1895 in Watauga County, NC. The date is probably roughly accurate; it corresponds to information from the 1930 Census. But I find it a little odd that she would have returned to NC (which the family left when she was still a baby) to get married. I don't know where that middle initial E came from. In the 1880 Census she's just plain Mary. I'd be a lot happier if she was Mary R. I don't know that I can get much further with this from here, as what we really need is a marriage record or a will, and the relevant information doesn't seem to be online for the period in question. Sharon, I gathered from one of your earlier messages that you live in or near Phelps County. A quick trip to the courthouse (or wherever the late 19th century marriage records are) may resolve this.
